Polk. Will it be a whig or 4 democratic administration? or will it be another abortion on the ‘no-party” grouad, like that of John Tyler’s'? Our city councils are msking the most exten- sive arrangements for a grand civic escort to the remains of the illustrious Adams, through our city In order to give more time for preparation here, as well as at the north, an application has been made to the committee at Washington to vostpone the day of starting, from Monday to Wednesday next, which will ‘probably be done We have been’visited with the first genuine snow storm of the season, and our pavements are covered this morning to the depth of six or eight inches. The weather, however, has be- come so moist that it isin a soft and melting condition, forbidding the prospect of good sivighing; though I hear anocvasion jingle of the bells this morning. The Seguins’ concert was but poorly attended last night, om account of the storm, the snow continuing to fall throughout the evening The Methodist Exscopai couference for this Sta », assembles | here on Monday nest, and some of the old and experienced fellows ary already here, knowing the advantage of securing good quarters by berlin Puitapetpaia, March 8, 1848. Sleighing—Political Rumors—Remains of Capt. Ayres— Movements of Mr. Clay, $c. The sieighs have been dashing through our streets all the morning, but the atmosphere has become so warm, that the snow is rapidly melt- ing. Many new omnibus sleighs made their first appearance this morning, one called the “Commodore Stockton,” built at the Glenat establishment, excited great admirstion from the magnificence of its decorations and dimen- sions. Another drawn by ten horses, called the “Captain Walker,” was the observed of all ob- servers. Rumors are afloat this morning, that Mr. Dal- las is about to decline in favor of Pennsylvania’s ovher favorite son, Mr. Buchanan, and it is even whispered that a letter to this effect will be pre- sented to the Harrisburg convention to-morrow. There can be little doubt, however, that this is buta weak invention of the enemy—it is the policy of neither to resign. The managers of the Monument Cemetery have given a lot to the fa-vily of the late Captain Ayres, of the U S. Army, and his remains will be interred there as soon as they arrive. They were placed on board the ship Washington thet left New Orleans on the 19th ult » and may be daily expected to reacn here Mr. Clay, in company with the city councils, started this morning on a visit to Girard college, where they will probably spend most of the day. Axpany, March 2, 1848, ‘The Report of the Legal Commissioners. The report of the ‘Commissioners on Prac- tice and Pleadings,” was submitted to the Le- gisleture to-day. There is no doubt but a num- ber of members of the Legislature would be ex- tremely glad of some pretence for an extra or special session. The constitution limits the present session to an hundred days, and upon the presentation of this report to the Senate to- day, a distinguished Senator expressed strong are already wearied with the character of erised, borrowing @ tri-d from Johu Var doubts of the ability of the Legislature to make a full and satisfactory examination and disposi tion of this important report, during the brief period which yet remains before the close of this session; in facet, this democratic Senator (Mr. Fine) boldly avowed his beliet that, ever though an election for President of the United States will be held this fall, the Governor of this State would be compelled to call a special ses sion ef this Legislature, in order that this decu- ment might receive that deliberate considera- tion which 1!s importance demands It is pretty certain thatthe whigs were naughty enough to wish tothrust the responsibility of an extra ses- sion upon the shoulders of the legal commission- unfi ortunately those gentlemen have been defatigable and so devoted in completiug th report, that the whigs will be unable to wail themselves of this splendid ruse.
