MA88 MEETING, TO NOMINATE GENERAL ZACHARY TAYLOR FOR THE FROESIDENOY. The eleotors of the city of New York, without any Aistinction of party, are requested to meet in GENE- RAL MA8S MEETING, at & place to be hereafter designated, on the 22d of February next, the anniver- sary of the birth of Washington, and also of the battle of Buons Vista, in order to place the name of ZACHARY TAYLOR, before the people of New York, as the great candidate of tho nation for the next Presidency. General Taylor bas already accepted # nomination made by five State conventions, and two hundred public meetings held by marsea of the people formerly belonging to both the old parties—whigs and democrats—in different parte of the country. He has consented to be the candidate of the whole people; but not of any exclusive party. All the free, independent, and non-office-seeking people of New York, who admire tho simple and sublime cha- racter of Genral Taylor, who feel grateful for his great and manifold public services, and who are in favor of the gradual absorption and annexation of all Mexico, on uocbunt of its great commercial advantages to the Northern Statea—all who condemn, despise, and abhor the gross corruption of the two old rotten parties, called whigs and democrate—all who are anxious to prevent Kagland, Spain, or any other nation of Europe, from taking posseasion of Mexioo, and her gold and silver mines—are invited particularly to attend, and to suppport these views and principles by their speeches and votes. Long live the North American Republio, from the Canadian Lakes to the Isthmus of Tehuantepeo, and from the Atlantic to the Pacific, with all the appurte- nances thereto belonging! God, Land and Liberty ! aes eter A RP ‘Theatrical and Musical. Bowrny Treatae.—There was another tremendous gathering here last night to witness Barry’s new piece of the “ Battle of Mexico,” which was performed in fine style, The house was full at an early hour, and after the drama of ‘Charlotte Temple,” which was given very handsomely by the company, everybody had got'settled in their places, and awaited with anziety the rise of Coe curtain for the commencement of the famous “Battle of Mexico; nor were they Glseppointed in their expectations; the plece having now been played for a week, everybody ia perfect in his part, and every- thing went off as smoothly as the works of a chroaome- ter. We have already expressed our oe regarding the merits of this spectacle; and after having witnessed it several times, we areonly strengthened in our opinion that it is the perfect avd splendid war piece ever produced on the stage of a New York theatre; and we do not doubt that it will prove a perfect miue riches to the proprietors of the Bowery. Our country mer- chants are just now beginning to come to town tor their spring atocks, and, if they wish to see how things can be dons in “ York,” we recommend them to goto the Bowery. Indsed, we recommend all citizens, as Well as strangers, to go and see thie fine spectacle. It is repeated again to-igit. Cuatmax Taeatar.—The entertainments last eve- ning commenced with a clarsical scene of ancient sta” tuary; by Mr. Fletcher, and we mastsay, the fidelity of the representations was very creditable. Next came the beautiful oomedy of “Speed the Plough” —Sir Philip Blanford, by Brandon, was ably sustained; and Bob Handy, by Hield, drew forth repeated cheers. Sir Abn Band, by Mr. C, Tay! lor, was excellent; in fact, gre dition to the stoek company atham, as hecan almost be thrown into any cbaracter, and sustain it with great credit. Miss Blan- ford was represented by a young lady who had better take some instructions before she oppears again. Susan ‘Ashfield, by Mrs. Wilkinson, was in keeping with the high character she bas already acquired. We have seen her in three characters, and we heve never seen them Detter performed. Lady Handy, by Miss Hildreth, was passable—but the comedy, asa whole, went cff well — T jodel Artists succeeded, andes usual, drew down plause of the audience The amasements conclu- ith the dramatio rpectacle of “Tekeli,” in which Brandon, Sutheriand, Taylor, and Mrs Wilkineon, acted well, There are many features of improvemont in this theatr: Patmo's Orexa House.—Everybody seems to have turned connoisseur of the human shape divine, now adays. if we may judge by the crowds that visit the va- venione troupes of model artists that appear in New York. By way of a musicsl curiosity, we would give the following account of the doivgs of this band for the last five acd a half years. duriog which they have held togeth-r as a band. They bave, during this period, given 879 concerts; thetr receipts have been $55,140 25; their expsases, $80,767 26; leaving thus clear profit of $81372 09, This is doing pretty well, we should say, Snd we trast they will continue {a this money making strato. They reappear this evening, at their old quar- ters, Mechanica’ Hall. Breapwar Opxon.—The last night of the Model Ar- tists was OF oe Syed victory to them. Their poses, their tebleaux, their groupings, were as fascinating as ever, and we bellevs that had they remained here till dooms: day they would still have attracted crowds. They have gone, however, and good luck go with them. They are a band of finely shaped folks, and will undoubtedly cre- ate a great sensation wherever they exhibit. Camrsru’s Ermiorian Seaexapens, who have deen Rigs s-4 4 before the New York pablio, comments asories of Ethiopian concerts lust evening, at the Al- hamra Saloon, in Broadway. It appears that the bulk of the debt has been cancelled under the new srrapgement. Over nine millions of bonds, exclusive of interest, have already been arranged, and hopes are entertained that the remainder will soon be surrendered. The principal of the State debt for which State bonds were issued, amounted to eleven million Sad sixty five thousand dol- Jars, showing but small balanoe remaining in the origi- nal shape. There has been no interest paid on the State debt since 1841, which becomes funded under the new arrangement. The Governor of Indians congratulates the Legislature upon having avoided the stain ofrepudi- ation; but the escape was s very narrow ono, There are mavy who do not consider the arrangement made any better than the repudiation of so much of the public debt, the Legielature hus thrown upon the public works of the State. Repudiation is almost too strong s term to apply, but it does not come far from it, Illinois has nade a much more creditable arrangement relative to its debt than Indiana, It has not compelied its credi- tors to give up half of their claims, and relieve the State from the responsibility of so much of their debt. The dondholders of Indiana may do 4 well, by releasing the State and looking to the proceeds of the canal of the State, as though the State provided forthe payment of interest, and retained possession of her public works; but the principle is bad. It is no more or less than say- {ng to the public creditor, if you do not take the canal and proceeds fer the payment of one-balf of your claim against the State, you will get nothing rr that portion of the debt. Jndiana will, before the Ispse of many years, pay’ the interest om her public debt in full, not but upon the debt created by but it would bave been much more oreditable to the Stats had she kept clear of the arrangement into which she has been drawn.
