nouncement that “the President and heads of depart- ments are expected to attend thisexhibition.” It would ‘appear from this, that neither Mr. Polk nor any of the gentlemen composing his ‘can amuse themselves by attending an exhibition of paintings, without being subjected to the petty annoyance of having their move- ments officially gazetted to the nation. It would be doing them greativjustice to suppose that they are parties to this foolery. 1 have before proved that it would be erroneous to regard the Union as the exponant of the views of the administration, It takes great pains to furnish abuo- dant proof of this fact. 1t is well known here, that there is at present a struggle in Alabama between the friends of Mr, Dixon H. Lewis and those of another well known member of the democratic party, for the vacant seat in the Senate of the United States. Without entering into partionlars, it is sufficient to say that Mr. Lewis is not the choice of the administration, and that his opponent is, and further, thet the utmost anxiety is felt by the prominent members of the Cabinet with regard to the issue, Nevertheless, the Union of the 18th inst. copied with approving preface, an article from a New York dem- ceratie paper, strongly favorable to Mr. Lewis’s election; and in the same paper it assumes to be the mouth-] piece ofthe administration. After this, who will hold the ad- ministration accountable for what appears im Mr, Polk’s organ? I need scarcely disclaim any intention to preju- dice Mr. Lewis or at all to interfere in the local politics of Alabama. I merely state these facts in support of my oft repeated averment, that the Univn does not repre- sent the views and feelings of the administration. _GALVIENSIS, ~Wasw Oran, , Sept, 27th, 1847. When are we to have News of Peace?—Very Important Considering. We can’t dos thing till we hear from “the Halls.” “ Old Hasty,” as the volunteers term the hero of Chip- pews and Chooroobothko, 60 lately called Field Marshal ‘Puree; holds the balance of power. What an exempli- fication of science is Gen. Scott. How accurate his cal- culations—how mathematical bis movements—how irre- sistible the results. War with him is indeed a science— and the movements of infantry, artillery and dragoons, are to him asa combination of machinery in the field, and as a family in camp. But we can’t do a thing till we hear trom him. Even the premium upon government stocks isin statu quo ante bellum, awaiting the news. Mr. Walker has mys- tertous misgivings. If» is afraid he will have to keep his Mexiean tariff in full swing for at least three or four months longer. [He contrives to get along. That system of transfers to New Orleans, saying the transportation of specie, saves money; but what will Old Bullion say? Is it not an infringement of the spirit of the Sub—the Van Buren, Bentontan, hard money Sub? It tsn’t any- thing else; but it works well, and saves money, and Mr. Benton may grumble if he chooses. Subs have the pri- vilege to grumble, but it is their principal function to obey. Bat every stands still in default of intelligence from the rer g city of the Aztecs. Suppose we et news to-morrow of @ peace, as well as of a treaty; who knows but it may yet work out # democratic majority or tie in the House?” Suppose the war goes on, who can foresee the consequences to the political parties of the country—to the administration--fo the country itself : Directly blended with this business with Mexico are the impertant home questions of the Presidency, the ques- any of taxation, the questions of territory, indemnities, and war. Pemay not the war be possibly extended to war as wide as the world, and as ferocious as the world-wide antago- nistic principles of liberty and despotism? Itgmay be ; it is not yet too late, if there be mo peace. Europe volcano. A is heaving on the crater of @ tei re single spark will set the grand eruption into activity. Then what isto be done’? The world is to be worked over again in the crucible of war—the like of which the world never yet seen. Who kaows what may be—what may not be the results, when the great mass of combust- ibles shall have been consumed’? Who can tell? ‘The question of peace, then, with the insignificant and contemptible Republic of Mexico, a disgrace to the name, and a source ofendless war among the poor Mexicana,((jod have mercy upon them,)—the question of a pesce with these people, may be of larger importance than the mere prolongation of the war to two or three weeks or mouths longer. Its prolongation may tend to precipitate the deadly struggie between the people and their oppressors all over the world, The very thought stirs up a pre- sentiment of thé part that this country will have to play in the terrible game of life and death. But we dismiss these forebodings There must be a treaty going on. Let us have a treaty and we can man- age to hold it good, and to enforce it, and to sustain it, without much trouble. We expect it, we look for it. and we are all standing still waitlog forit. We don’t care nobody cares, whether the line shail be the line of 26 or 36 —the great desire is peace—the object of our victories is to conquer a peace, not to conquer territory—for the ter ritory conquered north of 26 or 36, is not worth the prime cest of the gunpowder ; but peace is worth a do- zon wars, Peace, why, sir, every thing depends is upon peace. The war was began to conquer a peace. no peace with Mexico. The piece we had got es Mex- ico, in the way of trade, without the Pad of Mexico, was undefined, and it had to be settled, and till settled, we could have no poace. The means of peace failed.— Paredes threw down the glove, and General Taylor was sent down to the Rio Grande to pick it up. Then we had war ; and tae Mexicans were driven over the river, over the mountains, and into their capital, and witb Gen. Scott threatening to knock the national palance into fragments about their heads, they graciously con- descend to shake hands with Mr Trist, and to talk in a patronising way about peace, as though the act ef ac- commodation was all on their side. There has never been such # foolish nation on the face of the earth. — ‘They beat the Jews, and the Jews had no peace, till, by the order of Providence, they were ruled out of the coun. try He had given them, and it looks very much as if this were to be the case with the Mexicans. Now, sir, the war will do good. It ie, we believe, a war for the benefit of Mexico, and if sponged out from the map of nations, it will, yenene, be all the better for her. But we don’t want her pie-bald mongrels. We don’t want them. If we take them, they will, tea to one, kick up an irreconcilable split in the raamily. If we cross the Rio Grande for a boundary, we can’t fiad one this side of Panama. if ‘The administration does not desire to extinguish Mex- foo. It is not constitutional to absorb a poor neighbor's poor land by force of arms. If she will sell out, well «nough; but where shall we send her? But never mind. We expect peace—that is » treaty—the Rio Grande and the line of thirty-six, thence to the Pacific, some money to Mexico as hush money, and alittle help, if necessary, to hold up Santa Anna till he regains his foothold. Ali this may be done very nicely; and we may gain great ad- vantages by it in the end—a peace with Mexico, and her good behavior for the future, as weil as an increased good behavior on the part of that old bug-bear, John Buil, and his pelebhoes. hy is it that we do not hear from Gen, Se CHAPULTEPEC, Wasninaron, Sept, 28, 1847, The Wrong Road. It is said that when you apprehend bad news, and get no news, it is equivalent to good news, or in other words, no news is a good news; and better have none at ali than bad news. Some suppose that Scott's messengers may have taken the wrong road, and gone over to Aca- puleo, instead of coming down to Vera Cruz, or that the guerillas may have disregarded Santa Anna’s passport, ‘and captured the courier and his attaches, including Mr. Trist and the treaty. We understand that the President of the United States is indisposed to-day, and some thinkit is from hope deferred; but we rather think it is from the exhala- tions of the “ beautiful Potomac,” which looks like a swamp, when the tide’s down. Somo of the whigs talk of running ex-Governor Sew- ard of New York, for Vice President, in order to catch the sons of Green Erin, Perhaps they will be green enough to take the bait if thrown out, perhaps not. Love me, love my dog. Gov. Seward, we understand, doesn’t like Irish potatoes.
