eae ams ‘Wasuivaton, Aug 2, 1847, The return of Puredea—Ity Effect. the policy of the towards the United States, and ‘be worse than the present stagnant state of things. Paredes returns for one of two purposes—either to overthrow the government of Santa Anna, by pronouncing-against him for lack of ‘energy in the prosecution of the war, or else to form « junction with Santa Anna, aud endeavor to persuade him to unite with him (Paredes) in esteblishing a mo- naroby In Mexioo. By throwing himself among the body of the people, who are hoatile to the United States, and in favor ofthe war, and by assembling around him the military chiefs whom Santa Anna has dingraced and baoished, he may succeed in the first scheme. He is far cuperior to Sante Anna as a soldier, and the resiat- avce to our arms would, under bis guidanev, as sume a more formifsble aspect than-ft has yet ‘imeident to the forlorn hope In plain terms, the gentle carries his love of conviviality to exovss, mainly the indulgence in this unfortunate ‘propenaity which led to his deposition Isst year by Sante Anna. Should his present purpose be to overthrow Santa Anna, the latter will have two choices—either to make peace with the United States, and thus secure Mexico from the thraldom of a European powg” and, at the same time, defeat his old foe Paredes,» ‘oppose Doth the United States and Paredes, certainty of defeat, and exile should in imposing monarchy on Mexico. to resist the couclusion that Senta A: the more prudent course of making peiag United States, and thus and Louis Philippe, should really entertained any such chime- that of converting a republic inte a 1d Wut Paredes may return with a view to the couversion of Santa Anna himself to the establishment of a scion of some Buropean house on the threne of Moerioo. Sante Anna, with all his faults, ts no lover of kingly go- _yernmants; nor is it gtall for his interest that Mexico should be governed by a European monarch. and it is very doubtful if even the promise of European aid agninst the United States would gain his consent to the soheme. But should @ coalition be formed between him and Paredes, for the base purpose of selling to Louis Philippe, or any other royal jobber, the republic that he is sworn to defend, it will then beoome the duty of the Government of the United States to warn the Mexican people against the plots formed for the destruction of their nationality, and in the event of an indolent dieregard of the warning, then it will be- come the further duty of the government of the United States to protect the nationality of Mexico, against the traitorous designs of her own sons and the avarice of European sovereigns. 4o that, all the ciroumstanoes considered, the return of Paredes will have the effect of forcing aspeedy peace, or of compelling the United States, contrary to the de- sire uf the Government, to oooupy the whole country, ‘The probability is that Paredes designs to overthrow Santa Anna. ‘In that case, it will be the policy of the latter speedily to make peace with the United States. Judge Hepburn delivered an able and lucid charge to the jury, who retired about 10 o'clock, It was understood yesterday that the jury had agreed upon their verdict, and the anxiety fo ascer- tain the fate of the defendants was so intense this mora- ing that the court room was crowded ulmost as soon as it was opened.
