atten of Earp, av do not conceive tt possible the unfavorable influence of the em- ‘ psc existing among the commercial classes on the other side, The prime cause of the tightness ofthe London money market, and all the evils growing out of such a state ot things, is purely of alocal character, but ail the departments of trade are affected by it, and in ‘this way it will probably extend throughout thecommer- cial world, It is fortunate for us that we are creditors of Great Britain; that we are so independent in all our merean- tile transactions with that country; that we are not in- volved to that extent in the financial affairs of the United Kingdom, as in times past; that we stand firmly upon our own commercial platform, supplying the nation, of the earth with the staff of life, and the raw material for covering their nakedness, A few years since, the slightest difficulty in the London money market would have produced corresponding difficulties in the principal money markets of this country, but within the last few years @ vast change has taken place in the relative position of the two countries. With a ra- pidly increasing trade with Great Britain, most of which is im the additional quantity of merchandise expor‘ed trom the United States, we find ourselves less intimately connected, and less affected by any revulsion in the finan- |” ces of England than in times past. Then we were debt- ors and compelled to pay upat any sacrifices, now we are creditors, and demand payment whenever it is required. ‘Then our dependence for manufactured goods was pris- oipally upon Great Britain, now a large portion of the home demand is supplied by our domestic manufacturers; then the European demand for breadstuffé, was supplied by European nations, now they look to the United States in the event of any great deficiency. All this has heen produced within the past ten years, a very short time in the commercial history of any other country but this, What will be the result of the next ten years, no human boing can divine. ‘The embarrassments existing in the financial and oom- merci) circles of Great Britain, have been produced by & variety of causes, the movtimportant of which is the { nmense speculations going on in railway shares The immense amounts of money drawn from the channels of commerce and invested in those works, has completely deranged trade} and led indireotly to the insolvency of my houses engaged in legitimate commercial tran sac- tions This thing hes been hanging for a long time over the financial world, and its weight is depressing every other interest, and must itself eventually explode, sprend- Ing destruction and devastation in every direction. This bubble has been so inflated es to draw in all classes, and thousands must be ruined when it collapses. It would ‘be well for all if it would come at once—the sooner the better, ‘There is a vast difference in the position of the United Statesand England. The prosperity of the former pever ‘was greater or healthier, while the latter is almost upon the verge of national bankruptey. The former is rapidly progressing in every branch of industry, while the latter appears to have reached its, culminating point, and is th king in the wind. The resources of the two nations differ as widely as the characters of the people and the geographical location of each. ‘The most important branch of industry in Great Bri- tain, or we might say the principal cause of the vast wealth and power of Great Britain, is the growth and extent of her commerce. It is the grand source of her groatness, and will of course ever be cherished by thst government. Notwithstanding all the expenditure of blood and treasure, to extend her commerce, to build up amarkets for her manufactures in every nook and corner of the world, she stands but little in sdvance of the United States, The commerce of this country is merely en auxiliary, it is merely a secondary branch of indus- try, compared with our great agricultural resources, which must for ages be the grand source of wealth. We shall before the lapse of many years, eclipse all other na- tions in the three grand elements of wealth and power, commerce, agriculture, and manufactures. In one we al- ready stand pre-eminent, and inthe other two, we are not far behind any other. The world is already as- to inded at our rapid ‘progress, and we shall ourselycs ere long pause and wonder at our prosperity. When these three most important branches of industry become so extensive that we can feed and clothe the whole world, and do the carrying trade of all nations, there will bea power upon this continent that will regulate the fintn- o'al and commercial affairs of both hemispheres, and spread the influence of its institutions to the uttermcst parts of the earth. $4000 Treas Notes, 6s ‘ow Head ug Bonds b0shs NA rust lo 1.0 Farmers T 0 do. 35! 4. 40 Ohio Life & T 10° 200 do 33% 100 Morris Canal 15, 100HarlemRR 815 63 10 do 360 14% 50 do buw 68 360 1433 250 do 68; eo Hudson River RR br 50 do 830 68) 125 Cantaa Co 100 = do 30 69 N iv rr bi é Boge “a30 G97 $3 Nor ‘or s ‘ 50 Reading RR 66; ato o thy Second Board, 850 shs Nor& Wor R65. c shs L i talend RR 3 50 do 63) bs 3s so do 8 a0 Harlem KR bs 70 odo 65% 50 do b3 3 2 © do 65 50 do b3 70 190 do 230 63 «350 do 30 7034 100 do 42 60 100 do 332 Ty w do si9 58 250 do ed) 30 do 49 58 500 do b10 70 soda 850 57 % = do 872 46 oo. do sila 25 10 Mer Ex Co New Stock $3°00 Treas Notes bew 113% 6000 do bio 103% bo shs LTaland RR h30 sti “50 69 do bm 34 oo do bio 34 10 Harlem RR wt tom 30 odo bow 68% Orry TRADE REPORT. A plot, having for its object the slaughter of the inhabitants, was fortunately discovered, but not before a number of inhabitants had been massacred in several villages. All white and mulatto men, with the women and children, were murdered at Tepick, Party diffoul- ties had been set aside, and the Yucatecoe: were uniting to resist the insurgents. Mewico—The Prospect—The Postmaster General and the Unton, The prospect of peace is becoming daily more obscure. ‘Those who have been most sanguine on the subject, are becoming disheartened, and people, at length, begin to be impressed with the belief that any number of victories will be ineffectual to compel Mexico to sue for peace. The issue will be known ina few days. The occupation of the capital, by General Scott, will decide whether we aroto have peace or war. Should the go- yvernment remeve from the capital, and be accompanied by the British Legation, then we may be prepared for @ long and tedious struggle. If Mexico should virtually declare that she will not make peace, even after the cecupation of her capital, it would be the extreme of absurdity not, at once, to put from us all expectation of peace. In such an event we must, at once, prepare to maintain possession of those portions of the country that are best adapted to the conduct of such operations ‘as are necessary to secure the collection of revenue. Beyond the capital, the war will not be prosecuted. After the capital is in our possession, and the road to the coast cleared of all obstructions to travel and com- merce, ® combined movement on San Luis Potosi may be made by General Taylor’s column, and a portion of General Scott’simmediate command. A road must be opened from the rivers in that neighborhood to the sea- coast. The army will be employed in opening the oom- munication between the coast and the interior; and it will be the especial care of our governmeat to gives new impulse to the stagnant commerce and aed of the country. The revenues of Mexico, even under the old itory system, amounted to twelve millions of Under « judicious system it would amount to more. Her principal article of export being which is everywhere duty free, she ‘possesses extraordi- nery advantages as an importing country. Her com- merce being under the control of the United States, this advantage would continually increase according as her rich minéral resources would be developed by the enter- prise of our citizens, and ur der the operation of a mode- rate and judicious tariff. But if once our citizens settle down in Mexico in the prosecution of peaceful and luerative occupations, the efforts of our government will be vain—ethics will be vain—all the power of Mexico will be vain to restore her to the position she occupied before the commencement of the war. Her States, one after another, will be ab- sorbed into this republic. This is a consummation de- precated by the administration—deprecated by all mo- derate men—but nothing can prevent it. The event, if precipitated, will be fraught with no small temporary evil to the United States; but, om the other hand, it will be a death-blow to the nationality of Mexico. By pro- noucning for a continuance of the war, she will but seal her own destiny. What effect the return of Paredes will have on the people of Mexico, it is of course impossible to predict. He will no doubt endeavor to depose Santa Anns, and to pave the way for a monarchical form of government. He is brave, but sluggish and dissipated, and not well fitted for the execution of such s plot. If the majority of the Mexiogn people are such lovers of liberty and of republican institutions as they pretend to be, they will not fail to see in this impudent attempt, a strong argu- ment in favor of poace with the United States. In any event Paredes will not succeed. The Post Master General is most unfortunate in his apologists and defenders, A few days since, s Balti- more paper in an article ostensibly exculpatory of Mr. Johnson, poured upon him a flood of the most caustic irony, declaring that he compares favorably with Mr. Wickliffe, who is acknowledged to have been, however estimable in his private relations, the most unfit mam in the country for the oMice. It must be extremely conso- latory to Mr. Johnson to reflect, that he is accounted one notch lower than Mr. Wickliffe in the scale of un- fitness. It would be the extreme of cruelty to deprive him of this consolation, and I shal) not attempt such an invidious task. The executive organ is not #0 consl- dorate, That paper essays a defence of the Post Master General against “ the attacks of the Herald and its nu- merous correspondents,” and as usual damages the conse of his client, Its plea amounts te this—the New Jersey Railroad Company refused to carry§the mail on the Amboy route, unless the Post Master General would contract to pay them two prices. Now the public has nought to do with the petty squabbles between the Post Master General and his contractors. It does not take the slightest interest in this sordid quarrel.
