neasly Giecad a half millions of dollars, exceeding that of last year by about eight hundred thousand dol- lars. Jt is, however, our impression that the tots! in- come will exceed that amouat,as the bufiness on the canal, towards the close of navigation, is generally larger than during the months of July and August. In 1646, the receipts trom the opening of navigation to the end of the second week in August, were just avout one half of the aggregate for the season. Should such a result be realized this year, the total income will amount to nearly four millions of dollars. The amount of tolls collected on the Welland oanul, up to the Ist of July, 1847, was $54,866, against $39,064 ‘vo the corresponding period in 1846. This canal con- neots the waters of Lake Erie with those of Ontario, and enables veasels navigating Lake Ontario to pass into all the other western lakes, and transport produce from one extremity to the other. To the ports on Lake On- tario this canal is invaluable, and opens to them all the commerce of the west. ‘We annex a comparative statement of the eondition of the Farmers’ Bank of Virginia, and branches, on the Ist of July, in each of the past two years :— Vaauens Bags or Vina HA. ist. ar Yate i Pastors dees: eg 3 $ = ie BBE oles of other pire aeesas HEAL $6,020,267 4 $6,009,133 02 Covital stock... og 99 $2677 B40 0 sn oe. rast 92 198,827 06 vat ¥ 10,108 $8 $6,030 207 A= $6,007,193 02 ‘The aggregate movement of this bank and branches, tn July, 1847, compared with that for the same month, tm 1846, exhibits an inoreaso of nearly eight hundred thousand dollars. Tis increase is confined among the abilities to the circulation; and among the assets, the line of discounts, exchange, specie, and balance due fon banks.
