As we have had occasion several times to notice, a worm has appeared in some quarters, which in most instances is not believed to be the army worm, but in others is aa: to be the veritable worm which proved so destructive to cotton last year. Since the above was in type we have received Arkansas papers of a late date, and they say that tbe worm is doing great destruction to the cotton fields throughout the Stute—New Orleans Picayune, 7th inst. The New Orleans Picayune of the 8th inst. publishes the annexed letter :— Fort Jesvur, La., July 22, 1847. Eprrous oF Picavunr- nclese some of the genuine miller or butterfly, the eggs of which produce the army worm, which destroys the cotton croj yr your examina- tion, and for thoas that are not acquainted with them ; Ey see what small insects produce such vast destruction. 1 ba ot observed them until within the last two or three days in my plantation, but they are now quite numerous in the cotton, depositing their eggs, no doubt. They are remarkably wild, and fly very swift, and a person not acquainted with them, during the heat of the day, would hardly notice them ; but just after sun- set set and until dark they may be seen basily flitting h the cotton and buzzing about under the leaves beisy top of the stalka, for a short while, aud then oat off to another place to continue the same operations. As they are occasionally seen flying around the oan- @eson supper tabie at night, | would respectfully suggest the plan of getting numerous small torches of light on the stumps, or on stakes, just elevated above the top of the cotton through the fields at saudown, and keep them burning until after dark some time It may be the meuns of destroying some of them. | have com- meneed the pian; itis baftictle trouble, and cando no great harm. if no good | bave never known them show themselves #0 early in the ‘season before. As our cropa of cotton are generally backward, bat few bolls being fuli grown, if they commence now in earnest they will make a clean sweep Yours, with much segpeet, THOMPSON. P. S.—Juty 26—I would most respectfully ~~" another plan for destroying the cotton worus. from many years’ observation | have seen that those worms will not eat auy other vegetable or leaf of any shrub or tree but the cotton; and from experience, it is known that the leaves and berries of the China tree beaten fine and mixed with water, the saturation made quite strong and sprinkled on or over cabbages, or avy jen veg tables, will hig | drive off all worms or injurious in- sects them. Therefore, procure « larg quantity of the bitter, astringent or fe eel weeds. or leaves of trees, for henge aa the tobacco, Jerusalem oak.or worm seed, boneset, Jamestown weed. dog fennel, cockle- burr, stinkweed. or leavesat the peach tree, wild cherry, Chins tree, dogwood, paw paw. or any such, snd pound or Dest the leaves or weeds Sie i ina trough With a pestle would be the bee m)~ them in barrels or hogs- heads of water would be the better plan (makeit strong); 8 few hands, with a bucket full of liquid tu the left hand, and a bunch of twigs with the leaves on them, in the right hand, may tore the liquid over the tops of the cotton as fast as can walk along the rows. In this way a hand oan go > over a large piece of land in a short ti It would probably be well to do this early in the morning or lute in the evening, that the dew may assist it in spreading over the leaves, and w dries it on it will require a eonsider wash it off. 1 design tryin the periment. Take this for what it is worth; and i person will please sug- gest other or better modes to prevent or destroy those ‘worms. please let us have them; now is the time wo want the information, to save our crop, as the ony is surely here.
