No mail whatever south of Weldon. =m BY THE MAILS, Wasuinaron, Aug. 16, 1847 How ist We are upon the verge of Pacifications, We have great hopes that peace will bo secured before the meet- ing of Congress. It will have to be, or the question of Peace or war, and the whole pewer of the Government will be thrown into the hands of Mr. Calhoun. It is upon this postulate that we rely for Peace, as mach as upon Sante Anna’s double-dealing, or the exhaustion of the Mexican Goverament, or the influence of the British Minister. But taking all these considerations together, there is a strong showing for peace. Col Benton is a shrewd man—a long-headed man—a clear-headed man, although he is an egotistical man. Wo is now here. He can tell what ought to be done, even where Mr. Buchanan would hesitate. The heid of the State Department is a sagacious statesman, but be has not the boldness in @ great crisis, of Col. Benton. Will you, therefore, allow me to say that Col. Benton has « great influence with this Administration, and ia still the | coustant friend of Mr. Van Buren and Silas Wright. Largely, si, largely does the next Presidency hinge on this Mexican war’ If Col, Polk hall be enabled ts ye. port a peace to Congress, he may have it in hia power to control the succession. If he does not, the attlement of the Mexican difficulty, superadded to the li yon of the Oregon controversy, by Congress, him. Though he may be entitled to the fullest ‘Prales for his exertions, untiring and never despairing, if he fails of he may be olreumvented. The President will us witness that we are no ob- trusive customer, Yet we like the man, ase man and as the President. We know that his thoughts are bent upon peace for the sake of peace. We know that in principle he is averse to the shedding of blood. But # | Kteater principle has driven him to the alternative.— ‘The fool-hardiness and obstinacy, and stupid bravado of Paredes, in invading what the President believed to be the rightful territory of the United States, embrace that Greater principle—the principle of repelling in- vasion ‘There is another Principle at the bottom of this ques tion of peace. We shall ge. a considerable slice of M. ico by treaty—partly in satisfaction of indemnities, and. partly by purehase, All right. What next? What comes next? Spain is over hrad and ears in debt to Great Britain. ndy to Jamaica; and after using her good graces to bring*about a bargain with Mexico, what's to be done if England seizes Cuba ‘n foreclosure of her mortgage? Is not Cuba the key the Gulf? Does she not flank Texas, Mexico, aud} i. rida. To be sure she does. In the possession of E) will that island not endanger the safety of the Sout It must. Can the Union be hazarded in assentin, to such a transfer? No, What then? Time will tell We cannot see inte the future, As Mr. Calhoun snys, there is a curtain before us; but we think we hear the thunder of cannon on the Gulf close under the Keys of Florida; and the call to arms, from the St. Lawrenoe to the mouth of the Columbia. "But, let us hope for the best. Let us get the presert difficulty off our hands, and then see where the land lies. We hold that the notion that the Cubanoes are anx- ious tocome to our affectionate embraces is not axsctly the fact. ‘They are Spanish people. ‘Their sy are with Mexico in th’ and against us. Ol ae is against us, though she has never forgiven Mexioo.— ‘The people of Cuba are part and parcel of the people of Mexico and old Spain. Wemay get Cuba by-and-l but Mr. Yulee was too fast, and the New York Sun too fast. Let us settle with Mexico first, and look is a John Bull and Cuba when wo are clear of the difficulty, “If we could have all we desired, John Bull would be lifted off this continent in toto. He has land enough and to spare. But time will fix all this matter right. Why run ahead of the “manifest destiny ?— We know that for the present the British merchants in Mexico are driving their minister to second the efforts of Trist for peace. Let us have peace—let us hold old Spain to Cuba, and when her people there wish to be in dependent our course will be plain and \ensy. Ww. “Wasuiaron, Aug. 16, 1847 Peace About. ‘The administration, you may rely upon it, have the cards that will win the game, Santa Anna, It is sup- posed, will come up yet on the right side. We under. stand that Mr. Benton visited the White House to-day, and had a long conference with the President. Colonel Benton’s views are worth having, and hia counsel is equivalent to the winning of a battle at thir crisis — Every body here supposes that the administration knows what it is doing More this evening W.
