The English Legation was secretly exerting every in- fluence to keep the Americans out of the capital. Other letters to the Picayune, represent the chance of Peace in amore favorable light, and think the resist- ance to our advance will be almost nominal. ‘The Mexican Congress had referred Mr. Buchanan’s letter back to the Executive, and thrown on him the re- ‘*ponsibilities of the war. The peace party at the capital was strongand increasing. They have no faith in their generals, The Sun of Anchuac says that when the guerillas attacked Pearce, 600 Americans approached under their fire until within 100 yards of the Mexicans, when our forces opened deadly fire, forcing them to an imme- diate retreat. While the Mexicans were retreating, the American cavalry rushed upon them, killing about one hundred. ‘The position of the Mexicans was one of the strongest in the country, but the Americans passed the Bridge af- ter a short engagement, and arrivedjat Perote in safety. Gen. Seott despatching Gen. Smith’s brigade from Pue- bla to meet them at Perote. The Commercial Times considers the news # full con- firmation of the failure of Mr. Trist’s mission, and that all prospects of peace are dissipated. He is ambitious of the dictatorship. When Congress dissolved, it was done by the withdrawal of such a num- ber of members, as to leave the remainder below a con- stitutional quorum, Santa Anna held a council of general officers, at which it was resolved to effect one more encounter, either by marching against Scott at Puebla, or, reject- ing the propositions for negotiations, calmly await his advance, and act on the defensive. Im order to be free to act, Government issued a decree suspending all newspapers except the official organ. The Delta says that Congress had met and adjourned without coming to any decision upon the propositions of our Government. All letters from the capital agree that Gen. Scott can take the city without difficulty, and that the foreign merchants of the capital are anxious for his arrival. Lieut. Whipple bad arrived at the capital. The Sun of Anahuac attributes this withdrawal to the overwhelming force of the enemy, and fear of an at- tack. Gen. Almonte was still in confinement at Mejicalzin- go. Alveres was in the capital about the middle of July, and had several long interviews with Santa Anna. Mr. ‘Trist had been indisposed, but was convalescent. The American prisoners at the capital think that Ge. noral Scott takes it easy, and many believe that British Jealousy in endeavoring to keep Scott out of the capital, and that Santa Anna asks for terms. The First and Second Pennsylvania Regimente are with General Scott, and will, no doubt, play their part: gallantly in the great struggle that has by this time taken, place. Puitapeirnia, Aug. 14, 1847—M. In aletter dated at Puebla, July 30, Mr. Kendall re- marks that he had conversed with s gentleman who left the capital two days previous, and who represented the capital to be inundated with water, in consequence of which there was much sickness prevailing. It waa the belief of the foreigners in the city of Mexi- co, that an understanding existed between Gens. Scott and Santa Anna, to the effect that the latter would sur- vender the capital after the first attack of the Americans, and that peace would therefore ensue. About twenty-six thousand Mexican soldiers were estimated to be quartered in the capital. antl 6 i DMISTON & SON, TAILORS ANI MAKERS, 69 STRAND LONDON 'Trowsers, tet Liatoa Cloth Pelevots, Gentlemen visiting Ei large assortment of well ious to akin getablshment goods of from the best West of B DTROWSEKS Dress Coat, 60s. ; 26; Dress Vests land would do well to inspect the elected Cloths, Doeskins and Vest- purchases, as they will find at our 1 newest and most approved fabrics, milan manutactricn a the lowest possible cash prie a EDMISTON & SON, F230 jy15-91 aulS3i Ste 69 Stra . Gen, Santa Anna was supposed to be favorable to the peace negotiations, but was over-ruled in his opinions by the arrival of Gen. Valencia, from Potosi, who de. sired “a fight.” Gen, Scott expected to move from Puebla, for the ctty of Mexico, during the first week in August. Gen, Shields was at Puebla at the last accounts, and in the enjoyment of good health. Major Gaines, Capt. Cassius M. Clay, and the other American prisoners, were still in the city of Mextoo, without any prospect of release The American prisoners at the oapital, judging from our past successes, are of opinion that Gen. Scott will take the city with great caso, and with but little loss ou his side. ‘The expres from Pueble, which was supposed to bave been cut off, reached Vera Cruz on the 20th ult., with despatches from Gen.
