The main division of the United States army is supposed to be in a tight place—in such a position that it is hazardous,in default of the expeoted re-inforcements, to go forward—and dangerous to delay; while the back track without a fight and a defeat is out of the question; and the idea that a defeat can happen to the American armsin Mexico, cannot be seriously entertained for a moment, whatever may be the numerical strength, or however well devised and executed the plan of attack of the enemy. But even with a decisive victory on the part of Gen. Scott, he may be again delayed sufficiently long to allow the’ enemy to reouperate. This is what is to be feared; but even this apprehension will be removed, if we can be assured that on the first of July, Gen. Scott was enabled to push forward with 10,000 men, with a re- serve of 5000 to hold Puebla, and the road open to Wasuinaton, July 30, 1847. There is General Pillow, who digs his ditch inside the breastworks. As the names of these two Generals would imply, they are both softish. There is Gen. Price, who suffered himself nearly to be eaten up by the New Mexicans before he knew it; but then made a sterling fight. There is General Quitman, who wants chance to dis- ° — or extinguish himself. ‘here is General Pierce, who had to turn back to Vera Cruz for more men, afraid of Jaranta. There is General Cadwallader, who is the true soldier, ngs leaving the military mark. ‘There is Gen.
