EY reference to our report per Caledonia, on the sth ‘ast’, it will be observed that our ‘ket was stead: well bupplied by holders—after departure, oes desire to sell was evinoed by a be te holding a large sup- ply of New Orleans cotton, and, as there was no export demand, to affect sales, rates aeaieaty lower than the «quotations were readily accepted. With the exception of this movement, the market was quiet until eae 19th inst , the day we received the letter mail per this packet with dates from Liverpool to 3d inst., ® summary of the news having been received qn Saturday, 17th inst., by Lelegraph. ‘The advance of three-eighths of « penny was rather unexpected at this time, our most sanguino hold- ers not anticipating anything further than a strong market at seven p:nce for fair Uplands. An active demand, at an advance of full half a cent on the no- minal quotations, was immediately experienced, the sales of that day reaching twenty-five hundred bales, freight at three-cighths of a penny. The demand set- ‘ting in particularly on middling New Orleans, they were advanced to 11}¢ cents, from ten and three-quarters, ‘the nominal quotation, at which rate a good olassifi- »tion moved freely; during all this week the demand con- tinued unabated, and the daily sales were about the dame in extent, prices rather hardening up towards the closo—freight also was held firmer, an moved up to half-penny. On the 26th instant the ae et com: menced to assume its former quiet aspect, which has continued to this date, with a reduced amount on pale, and at the close, purchases to a limited extent of ds tached parcels, were effected ata decline of a quai ® cent on those of that day week. We adjust our tations to the closing prices by advancing them cent on those of our last report, remarking, that at these figures there is no desire to press sales. ‘The sales for the week ending the 24th instapt were M4 000 bales. ‘This week to date 3,000 bales. The deficiency of the yeceipts this season, as compared with the pevtious ee stands now at 298.000 bales. The Sefiolenoy of ex) a to Great Britain 297,000 bales. To France 121, —making a total deficiency of 448,000 bales. In relation to the appearance of the next crep, we can- not continue to give as favorable an account as in our last report. At that date we alluded to the favorable appearance of the plant in Lower Mississippi, Louisiana, South Alabama, Florida and Texas—and that the only danger to: be srprenandet, was that the bh which had set in there, would flood the country der the ground incapable of being worked, and that the natural tendency would be an excessive growth of the ‘weed, causing the plant to run to stalk,as in 1840—and ing an exuberance of grass, which it would be umpossible to remove, and which would be fatal to the second planting, on which so much this season depends. Since thet date, the rains have continued over the greater part of the above States, and also over Geor- gia and South Carolina, with but little intermi sion—Florida and Texas being alone sraenies and we think the Hroepest now more decidedly adverse for a good yield, than during the last ten years. Several correspondents write, that many Plantations completely submerged, while on others, the squares and bolls are already rotting off, and drop- ping profusely. Should the rains be succeeded suddenly y & spell of hot dry weather, it will beyond question bo fatal te the crop; nothing but the most favorable wea- ther during the remainder of the season, a late frost, and an entire freedom from the ox ow can give an aver- age crop, and it iu not likely that wo shall be exempt from that epidemic, for they have appeared already Clarke, Perry and Sumter counties in Alabama, sithough as yet, they have committed no serious rav: Movements oF Coron in tHe Unitep rates Rece ipts at ‘cote! FURTHER FROM MEXICO The Peace ‘Commissioners. THE OPrNIons OF THE MEXICAN PRESS: SPEECH OF GEN, TAYLOR, ‘The Southern papers which reached Richmond yester- day, contain further intelligence relative to the state of affairs in the war quarter. ‘The Picayune learns from a source entitied te credit, that Gen. Pierce did not leave Vera Crus on the 17th of July, but was expected to march from that place on the evening of the next day The health of the city of Vera Cruz had been re- The Governor of Vera Cruz is said to have recelved information that an attack would be made on that place immediately after the departure of Gen. Pearce. The necessary preparations for an effectval defence had been made by the Governor. ‘The correspondence of the Picayune makes no mem- tion of the force collected at the National Bridge. Letters from authentic sources have been received at Vera Cruz, from the city of Mexico, which positively state that Santa Anna is in favor of peace, and is only waiting until the peace party shall acquire undisputed ascendancy, before publicly declaring his sentiments. It was unknown at Vera Cruz as to whether Sante An- na or the Mexican Congress had selected the commis- sioners to confer with Mr. Trist. itively known that the Congress had even assembled at all, but it was understood that the peace commissioners Were assembled on the 7th of July by order of the con- gressional body. The Jornel, » partizan paper, adhering to the cause of Paredes, denounces Garostiza, the moderator ; and Bar- anda, as the creatures of Santa Anna. The Sun of Anahuac avers that the commissioners represent the views of Santa Anna, and therefore draws the conclusion that the latter is decidedly in favor of the re-establishment of peace between the two governments. The Fico Iris, of the 13th, asserts that the commis- missioners had accepted of their appointments, and taken their departure for the purpose of discharging the duties entrusted to them. This course, observes the Tris, is approved of by a large majority of the most in- fluential men in the republic, and whose exertions, in a great degree, contributed to this result. One letter mentions, as being appointed om the com- mission, Cuevor Corlina and Sera Surea. Santa Anna still remained in power, and no ohange in his cabinet had occurred. A majority of his ministers were said to be in faver of an immediate adjustment of the difficulties between their own country and the Uni- ted States of the north. Gen. Pillow arrived at Puebla on the 8th of July, with Indeed, it was not pos- Nogotiations for peace were under pendency as late ne the llth, up to which time Gen. Seott had not moved to- wards the capital. The New Orleans Commercial Times states that a French gentleman at Tampico, who left the capital on the 6th of July, declares that the Mexican Congress was not in session at that time, and that nothing was known relative to the appointment of commissioners, ‘The New Orleans Bee represents the accounts from Mexico as conflicting, but those from the most authentic sources indicate a disposition to negociate. The terms conceded by the United States, however, must be very ‘The Picayune contains the oration of Gen. Cushing, and the reply of Gen. Taylor, at the Walnut Springs, on the occasion of the celebrationof the 4th of July. Like- wise the numerous toasts offered on the same day, at Monterey, together with the speeohes,of Gens. Taylor, Cushir g, and Col, Wright,on occasion of the complimen- tary dinner to “Old Rough and Ready.” Liout. Fuller, of the Massachusetts regiment, gave the following sentiment :— Gen. Tavcon—* We hail himi as the next President. May his civil be as brilliant as his military career.” To the above Gen. Taylor arose and briefly re- sponded thus :—“I have never had the vanity to aspire to or look for the elevated station which has just been alluded to, but if my fellow countrymen think preper to elevate me to no distinguished and honorable « position, I shall most certainly do my best to faithfully discharge the responsible duties imposed upon me. other candidate be preferred and offered, who may be more competent than myself, | need not say that I will most cheerfully acquiesce in thé decision, and shall re- Joice that there is one more worthy to represent the people in the highest office in their gift.”” Bautimoar, July 81. Taylor. This isthe only contingency that will justify the march of Gen.
