session of emigrants, within that period, have been at least five millions of dollars more, making about thirty iilions of dollars in specie, added to the gold and silver currency of thy country in about six months. This is so much real wealth ; we are actually so much richer, a8 we owe nothing for this money. What we have not paid for in our products, is owned by those who brought it into the country, and it came here without any thing being given in exchange. It therfore cost nothing. Specie brought into the country by immi- grants is doubly valuable, as they make use of it for the _ Purpose of purchasing, cultivating and improving the soil, and for the purpose of developing the resources of the Western country. ‘The wealth added to the country witin the past year, by the importation of specie. is permanent; net a frac- tion of which will ever find its way again across the At- lantic. We have enough merchandise to send out of thé country to pay for ull foreign manufactures brought into it ; and 40 long as we holdon to the independent treasury system, and keep our currency close up to a specie standard, there will be very little danger of an excessive importation of foreign goods. Our manufacturers can compete with those of Europe more successfully under a properly regulated financial system, than when the cur- reucy is subject te those immense expansions and con- tractions, which have heretofore buen so frequently ex- perienced; and manufactures established under a restric- ted banking system, can sustain themselves under the most contracted movement, while those commenced in speculative times, and in a season of high prices, cannot stand the revolution a pinching money market invaria- bly produces, We, therefore, look upon the extension of our manufacturing interest, during the existence of low prices, and of a reduced tariff, as an exceedingly tavora- ble feature—one calculated to put at rest all statements that an inflated paper currency and a high duty, are ne- ovnsary to foster and sustain this branch of domestic in- dustry. ‘We shall never have an importation of foreign manufac- tures into this country again equal to what we have had, while our exports have been, and still are very limited 4 to what they ultimately must be. Our manufactures are increasing faster than our wants, and the markets in this part of the world for foreign goods are annually de- { creasing. A few years will suffice to change the entire complexion of our foreign trade, and place a large |, vatance annually to our credit. NEWS FROM MEXICO BY OUR SPECIAL OVERLAND EXPRESS, THE AMERICAN PRISONERS, ATTACK ON TAMPICO. Santa Anna Raising Money at the Point of the Bayonet. Be. Ke. &e. Our overland express from New Orleans reached Bal. timore yest-rday morning, with advices from that olty of the 7th instant. Our special agent immediately trans. mitted the following summary of the news, The New Orleans Picayune of the 7th inst., announ- ces the arrival of the schooners Sarah and Major H. Bache, from Tampico, both having sailed on the 27th ult. By these arrivals the most interesting news relates to the American prisoners in Mexico, All the accounts, verbal and written, agree that intelligence had been re- ceived at Tampico that Majors Gaines and Borland Capt. Clay and the other American prisoners in Mexico, had been released, and ordered to Tampico under a large esoort. This escort was said to consist of 900 men. ‘The verbal reports which have reached us, are to the effect that when the prisoners had reached within 160 miles of Tampico, they were met by Urrea, who detained them as prisoners. The story is further, that Urres had ordered out all the me® of the country that could be raised, for the purposes of making an attack upon Tam- Pico. It appears to be certain that such was deemed the immineney of an attack that three companies of the 11th Infantry, which were waiting at Tampico for trans- portation to Vera Crus, were ordered ,up into the elty, Every man there was under arms, expecting the town to be attacked. We have heard so frequently of the apprehensions of an immediate attack upon Tampico, that very little at- tention is paid to them. The present alarm appears to be better founded than usual. We see no reason to doubt the report of the release of our prisoners, of their encountering Urrea and his treatment of them. We have nothing but the reports eurrent in Tampico, and credited by Captains Furwell and McDowell, of the schooners which have arrived. ‘The Sarah was boarded on the 28th ult., off Marina from the U. 8, brig Heckia, blockading the port in company with U. 8. schr. Flirt. The following letter js from Mr. Clifton, the harbor master of Tampic: ‘Tamprco, June 27, 1847. Gontlemen—As several vemsels. have, run preat Hiek ta. coming in towards the bar of T: ico, aed give notice to masters that there ase’ three Fetal States pilots at the bar, and that SACRE shows herself. a boat goes out to meet her; but should the bar be too rough to a black will be hoisted on the North Polat, and the vessel will sicher sb sr eight fathoms or stand off ‘ould # vessel by accident get #0 close in as to have to run in or go ashore, a boat wil some a8 near ax possible, and point with a flag in what direction to steer. Bi the houses on the North Point to bear W. N. W. am they will be off the mouth of the channel. If we should think it safe for her her to stand in, a white flag will be hoisted. All thia will be when it is ‘impossible to get over the bar; when it is really possible to cross, s boat will be off the bar from daylig "until dark. Cassius M. Clay, Maj. Borlaud aud all the American prisoners are expeoted in town to-morrow or next day. The three companies of the 1ith regiment of now awaiting transportation to Vera Crus, have been ordered up tg town, as it is said the prisoners have « Very large escort —I have heard it set down at 900 men. ‘bh jooner Star, from Vera Cruz, and the schooner Prentice, from Mobile, came in this m I have been:sent to the bar in company with Caj Edward Jenkins,to form » United States Pilot estal ment, as the former one did not give satisfaction. Ci tain obert see is activel pao in my at the interim, Respectfi A. J. Curron. An extra ofthe New Orleans Times, of July 7th, an- nounces the srrival of the steamship Alabama, from Vero Cruz on the 2d inst. The latest dates from Mexico by t rrtval are to the 19th June. Santa Anna it is said has demanced 4 forced Joan of one million, and is raising the money at the point of the bayonet. A letter further states that the work of fortifying the approaches to the Capital is progressing with great ener- gy, but with very little judgment. No further tidings have been received from General Seott, except that he has abandoned Jalappa, and it was in possession of the guerillas. Commodore Perry has returned from his expedition to Tobasco; he found the river impassable, and consequent- ly landed his troops and marched to thetewn. He found the enemy ready to receive him, and having drawn up his foroes, they fired, which the Commodore returned, when they scattered. Four of our men were wounded,Lieut. Puitapecrmia, July 14, 1847, William Rushworth and Patrick McGuire quarrelled last night in Decatur street; a regular fight ensaed, when the former got the latter down, throttled him until his tongue protruded from his mouth, and then bit it off. The physicians fear death will ensue from mortification or lock-jaw, and in case of recovery he will be deprived of the power of articulation, —— BY THE MAAL Wasnixoron, July 13, 1847, Despatches from General Taylor—General Scutt and Mr. Trist—The United States and the Roman Pon- uf. Letters have been received from General Taylor, stating that he can spare some troops to General Scott, having now a superabundance for his present exigeneles. He does not design moving on San Luis Potosi, as his present convictions are opposed to such a movement as inexpedient, because unlikely to be attended by any good results. No necessity at present existe for » for- ward movement, as General Scott’s advance on the capt- tal will be made before he can be joined by General Taylor, The declaration of the latter, that he has a larger force than he requires, is # sufficient refutation of the hacknied charge that the administration has left General Taylor destitute of troops. Nothing further has transpired of the misunderstand- ing between General Scott and Mr. Trist.
