your common ordinary 1g of pleasure, that T nay my first visit to this great city: the ground which those noble institutions have hallowed as peculiar- ly their own. With you, sir, I agree that upon the in- telligence and virtue of the people, depend the perpe- tuity of the free institutions under which we live: and [ hope that during my short sojourn among you. 1 may be- se ring a Ganstanes with many Of those excel- ent mea. ve made your city so celebrat be- nevolenes and liberality, > ¥ ae This ceremony belng over, the President and the | Mayor stepped into the magnificent barouche obtained from Mr. Niles, of School street—which carriage was drawn by six beautiful black horses, The military com- panies formed into escort line, the President’ convey- ance bing surrounded by a detachment of the Lancers, snd the procession moved on. The Lancers were fore- ‘oat in the escort, and they wore followed by the first regiment of infantry, in the order of company seniority, ycether with the Rifle corps. The regiment looked finely. though we have seen the various companies turn. out with fuller ranks. Throughout Beacon, Park and Tremont streets, and indeed along the whole line of the route, the windows were filled with lookers on, but ex- cept apon the public buildi: there was avery small Aisplay of flage: banners or decorations, An occasional cheer Was heard aa the procession passed, but the most Yehem ut applause was given to the several fire compa- nies, rather than to the President. There were half a | dozen dou juets, however, thrown into his carriage. The | prettiest spectacle of all, was that ot the children of the public schools—girls and hoys—who were arranged slong | the Tremont street Mall, supported by the firemen. The blue and red garments of hun of athletic men, contrasted with the white robes of as many young girls, altogether made up a very pleasing picture. ‘The city goverament was not very strongly represented inthe procession, there not having been, as we | should judge, more than half the members of the | Couneils present. There were somethin like a dozen | carriages which we observed to be entirely empty. Pass- ing along through the streets mentioned in the publish- ed pre imme, the President aud s were conducted evere House, which they reached shortly after ‘clock. Mr. Polk in a few moments retired to take some rest, but at six o’clock met the authorities of the ar and a number of invited guests, atdinner. Of the doings at this time we are unable to givo any ac- count, the press having been entirely forgotten by the Committee of Arrangements, In the evening, after din- ner, the President received the calls of the citizens who wished to pay their respects to the Chief Magistrate of the Republic, and then, at an early hour, retired to rest. As ia usually the case when a President comes to Boston, the weather was unpleasant. The northeast wind which prevailed early in the morning inspired the hope that the day would be calm and cool. But just before twelve o'clock there came up & a shower, and rain con- tinued to fallthroughout the remainder of the day. At times it seemed like a deluge. ‘The President rode through the whole route with his hat off, and our worthy Mayor was agreeably occupied in holding an uinbrella over his head. The truckmen, who had turned out, mounted, in considerable numbers, became dissatisfied with the place assigned thera in the procession, and left the ground just before the President arrived in the city. ‘They objected, we hw to marching in the rear of the Irish anu German Societies, We learn from a friend who was present, that at 6 0’- clock it was announced at the Revere House that dinner was ready, and the gentlemen invited to dino with the President at once proceeded to the saloon. ‘There were amongst the company, besides those distinguished per- souages already mentioned as having been in the proce sion, Governors Briggs, Toucey, Hubbard, Anderson an Morton, id Commodores Stewart and Parker. The dinner was served in excellent style, but there was no speaking at all at the table. After dinner, which was not over till nearly half past 8 o’clock, the President repair- ed to the public parlors of the house, and was there in- troduced to quite a large number of gentlemen, who called to pay him their respects. ‘Tho President retired early, being very much futigued. At ubout 10 o'clock, ail those who had assembled to greet him, dispersed, and left him to his repose. ‘The brigade band repaired to the house at 10 o'clock, and serenaded the President with a variety of airs, amongst which Hail Columbia and Yankee Doodle were conspicuous, nat 024 we learn, the President will visit the steamship Cambria, at East Bos- ton, and then proceed to Charlestown. In the afternoon, we understand, that he will goto Lowell in 4 special train. There are committees in town, to-day, va- rious cities and towns in the State, tendering the hospi- talities of the people tothe President. New Bedford, Newburyport, Portsmouth, and other places are thus represented. + Sporting Intelligence. The receipts of the Long Island Railroad Company are daily increasing, and the expenses decreasing. A very important reduction in the expenditures of the company is in contemplation. We learn that the assignees of the Commercial and Railroad Bank. of Vicksburg, will soon make @ report to the stockholders of the condition of the affairs of this corporation, and surrender it up, to take its station again among the institutions of the country, under the man- agement of @ board of directors and officers. When the stockholders find that the assignees have nearly set- tled all the claims against the company, and have pre- served to the stockholders the railroad, and nearly the entire capital of the bank, the large annual salaries paid “ tn gentlemen will cease to bea subject of com- plaint. If we are not much deceived by figures, the report of the condition of this company, shortly to be made, will show that this stock, which the knowing ones have been buying for a long time at low prices, is intrinsically a very valuable stock, and under good management, would soon be made to remunerate its holders with dividends. Stockholders in this company should take courage, when they see that the Stonington railroad, which afew years ago was considered worthless, has been, by good man- agement, made capable of paying a dividend toits stock- holders. ‘The Farmers and Planters’ Bank of Baltimore has de- clarea a dividend of three and a half per cent, for the last six months. ‘The Union Bank of Maryland has declared « dividend of three per cent, for the last six months. ‘The following counterfeits have recently made their appearance :— 9’4on the Andover Bank,” Mass. 10's; on the Cayuga County Bank, N.Y. 10's on the Farmers’ Bank, Gene- ya, N.Y. 3's on the Eagle Bank, Providence. ’ 5's on the Bank of Virginia. 1°s on the State Bank of Indiana, 1s on the Union Bank of Tennessee, 5’ on the Ame! can Exchange Bank, 5's on the Lafayette Bank, Cinci i 2's, 3" and 6° on tho Haveriill Bank, Mass. 3's on the Millbury Bank, Mass. 5's on the Albany City Bank. 10's on the Mechanics’ Bank of Burlington. We understand that the trustees of the town of Ports: | mouth, Virginia, have purchased the Portsmouth und Roanoke Railroad from the board of public works of that State, under the act passed at the last session of the Le- Bislature, for the sum of $50,000, upon a credit of six years, and that they have sold the road to Messrs, Hen- shaw & Co, of Boston. ‘The new company will immediately lay down ‘T rails from Portsmouth to Welden, and will also extend the road thirteen miles further, in order to connect with the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad. From the first of January tothe first of June, 1847, there were transferred to the Comptroller, in trust for the redemption of circulating notes in the free banking department, stocks of the State of New York, amount- ing to the sum of $1,850,000; add New York stocks on hand, January 1, 1847, $4,472,845—total of New York stocks, $6,822,845; there are also bonds and mort- Bages, $1,552,265 40; stocks of other States, $1,772,- 701 27, as follows: United States 5's, $55,000; United States 6's, $50,000; Indiana, $4,000; Alabama, $34,000; Arkansas, $499,000; Illinois, $643,666 67; Michigan, $487,033 60. Making the total amount of securities de- posited in the free banking department, for the redemp- tion of circulating notes, $9,647,310 67. ‘Tho following banks have been established since the first of January, viz: State Bank, at Saugerties, Ulster county; Farmers’ Bank, Mina, Chautauque county; Northern Bank of New York, Madrid, St, Lawrence co.; Bank of Bainbridge, Chenango county; Atlas Bank of | New York, Clymer, Chautauque county; Merchants’ Bank, Ellery, Chantauque county; Commercial Babk- Friendship, Allegany county; American Bank, May, ville, Chautauque county. The Commercial Bank of Albany, and the Bank of Rochester, are making arrangements to continue their business, after the expiration of their charters, under the free banking system. In less than six months, nearly two millions of dollars of New York State stocks were deposited with the Comp- troller. Already about one quarter part of the aggre- gate debt of the State has been absorbed ‘as securi- ties, aud deposited in the hands of the financial off. cer of the State. The beauties of this system of bank- ing, are daily illustrated, and ultimately, all the banks in the State must come under itsoperation. As fast as the charters of the Safety Fund Banks expire, they adopt the new system, and continue business without the slightest interruption. ‘The Legislature of Pennsylvania, every year is bo- sieged with applicants for charters, to establish banks. By adopting a system similar to the Free Banking Law of this State, these new banks could be formed under it, andin this way it could be gradually introduced, and | the old system gradually done away with. Such a sys- tem would be particularly advantageous to Pennsylva- nia, on account of the magnitude of her debt, while it | would secure those who are compelled in the way of bu- siness to give these institutions more or less credit. It would relieve the market of a vast amount of stocks, Stiffness of the / *bich now weigh upon it, and make it available to capi- talists, This isa subject for serious consideration by the next Legislature of Pennsylvania, and we hope will receive favorable attention. Of all the banking sy« | tems which have from time to time been tried, this docidedly the best, in every particular. Mr, W's nomination was finally confirmed by » vote of 23 to2. Unanimous consent was asked to trams- mit the confirmation of Mr. Whittlesey to the Governor. Mr. Barlow objected, and it cannot be transmitted till one week from to-day. The Governor subsequently nominated Marcus 7.
