Al) was quiet at the latter place, and the troops in good health. en the party left Santa Fe, nothing of particular interest had recently ocourred, further than the conti- nued sickliness of the place. Our troops were dying off very fast. At Twos, the military force, under Lieut. Gol, Willoek, was holding the people in subjection, and little fear was entertained of another out-break. ‘The health was better than at Santa Fe The party from ‘Taos came by Fort William, on the Arkansas, which latter place they left on the 26th ult., and crossed the vast plains between that place and the western frontier of Missouri in fourteen days—the quickest trip on record. Nothing of especial interest oc- curred on their route, until the party had reached Wal- nut creek, about 300 miles west of Fort Leavenworth. There they were attacked by a band of 100 Arapa- joo Indians, and one of their number, Mr. Wm. Tharp,, of thiscity, was killed. This occurred on the 28th ult. Francis de’ Lisle, the wagon-master of the party, and Mr. Tharp had gone out to kill buffalo, which were ver¢ near camp. They had not progressed more than 300 yards, before they were charged upon by the savages in three separate parties. Tharp, as they spproached, fired and killed one of the leaders. In another instant, he was pierced by arrows and balls, and fell dead. Lisle, who was a short distance from Tharp, raised his gun, but did not fire, and thus kept the enemy at bay Until the camp came to his succor. In an instant, how- ever, poor Tharp had been scalped, and the Indians we on the retreat, driving off sixty head of horses and mules belonging tothe Americans. After this the party met with no hostile Indians, except a band of Potawatamien, who were going to war against tho Pawnees. At such times any indians are dangerous, but these passed on without doing mischief. They are comparatively a civi- lized band, who live on the Marias des Cygnis. On the day before the party left ‘Taos, three Mexicans arrived, bringing intelligence that they had been ot a party of eighteen, mostly Americans, who wero bringing in an express from California, ‘The rest they left ou Green Hiver, but thought it probable they wero not far behind—the express would come by the way of Santa Fé. ‘The Mexicans could give no particulars as to ite purport, or the civil condition Of the country; the: reported, however, having met the express which left here in January last; the bearer of it, Mr. Newman, had arrived within short distance of his place of deat!- nation. Troubles havo recently broken out among our border tribes, and several of them have gone to war. In this quarrel the Sioux and fawnees are the principals, but they have drawn in the Delawares, Shawnees, Potawato- mies, (peaceful tribes,) Mahag, Kanzas, Otoes, and others. ‘Their agents have labored to quell the diMiculty, but without success. Many of the Mormons of the neighborhood of Council Bluffs have departed for Oregon. It is fearod they will fare badly from hostile Indians before they reach the land ot promise. About 10 o'clock last night a destructive fire broke out in our city, and laid waste ® large amount of pro- perty. The loss cannot fall far short of $50,000. It commenced in the carriage manufactory of Fallon & Wright, Third street, near Vine, which it entirely con- sumed, ’ Two furniture warehouses, an extensive turn- ing establishment, an upholstery store, and several largo storehouses, were entirely consumed. ‘For some time the Planters’ Tobaceo warehouse was in great peril, the roof being on fire. ‘The extensive buildings of the Amoriean Fur Gompany only @caped by being fire proof. They were literally covered with flames from tho ad buildings. The night was calm, or the devastation would have been tremendous. A'very large portion of the property destroyed was uninsured. The reception of the Hibernia’s news produced a ma- torial advance in the prices of produce, ‘The following are the current figures: — Flour, country brands, $6 373¢ a $6 60; City Mills, ex- 78 $7 50; Wheat, prime, in sacks, $1 30 a $1 35 per bushel; Corn, do do, 68 a 60c do; Tobacoo, fair to fine manut a $3 50 a $9 per 100 Ibs; Hemp, $70 $76 por ton (a decline); Lead, $3 60 per 100 Lbs; Hide dry flint, 7c (a decline); Bacon sides, clear 7} a Se; Hams, 63 a 64; Shoulders, 444 a 43¢c; Lard, 7c # Tso; Mess Pork, $13 50 a $14 per bbl; prime do $11 60 a $12, do, ke. ke. With feelings of deep regret, however, we find in the Weekly Herald of the 24th April an erroneous statement respecting this country, which cannot but have a ten- dency to destroy all confidence in the stability of the Venesuelian government. Reference is here made to a paragraph purporting to be news, given by Captain Hill, of the “Canton,” just arrived at New York, from La- . “That an insurrection had broken out in Ca- weeds about the 29th ult. against Gen, Paes, the Presi- dent.” It may be proper to state that Gen. Paez is not the President of Venezuela, neither has he held that high office since the 20th of January 1843, when his con- atitutional term expired. He is the Commander-in- Chief ot the army, in which eapacity this brave man and triot officer will, through his immense influence, sus- in the government as actually constituted.
