Wasuinaro, June 9, 1847. The True Grit of a Volunteer. Conversing to-day with a volunteer of the new batta- lion, a third person standing by, remarked that he must look sharp im reconnoitreing those Mexican churches, and he might make a prize of a golden Jesus or two, or even of “our lady of Gaudaloupe,’’ with her diamond spangled flounces. The little volunteer looked indignant, and promptly replied : “ No, sir, the plunder of churches is not one of the articles of war: As [ understand it, we do not make war against Mexico, for the sake of lunder- ing her churches; and before | will descend to that sort fer both arms to be chopped off close ” That's what we call the true grit a volunteer. We shall reach the sense of the Mexican clergy all the sooner by keop ing up th thus far pursued, sooner than » e barbarian of an indiscriminate plunder. ie ver, hint at this fat. ter plan has been hooted down the win FRIAR JOHN. Wasuxoros, June 9, 1947. A Hard Case, A month ago it was generally understood that Chas. Lee Jones, of this city, waa settled upon as thelieutenant colonel for the new battalion of this district. He so un- derstood it—every kody so understood it. Charley, to be sure, was not yet distinguished as a military man, but it was understood that the appointment was bis.— So understanding the case, he went to work like a true soldier, with heart and soul inthe business. He opened his fine large house on the Avenue as a recruiting sta- tion for Dan Henrie—he hired men to drum up recruits —he daily attended to the recruiting operations for the several companies—his time and money were nothing— he was determined to raise the battalion. It is now about full—ready to go. What now? Weill tell you what. Seeretary Marcy says Capt. Hughes, of the regu- lara, (a brave and learned officer.) must have these volun- teers. The volunteers bave entered a remonstrance, but we have not heard of the result. If the Secretary con- tinues intractable, there will be a fayeg) meeting here, and as far as we can aid the ends of justice, we shall stand up for the rights of Charley. It will never do to allow a thing of this sort to go into operation. w. Aupasy, June 9, 1847. Anti-Rentism—Affairs in the State Capital, $c. $e. T remarked ina late number of the Herald, that va- rious signs indicated the complete dissolution of the anti-rent organization; I said that it was an event which might be confidently expected. The result of the election has shown that that presumption was pub- lished on good grounds. In this county, which is the seat of anti-rentism, they polled on Monday only one thousand votes for their regular candidate for District Attorney, and about the same number of yotes for Sur- rogate. There bas been, therefore, a decrease of several thousand anti-remt votes since last fall, when ‘The vote for Harris, the anti-rent nominee for Sen: tor, was larger than that ¢' I now say, unhesitatingly unti-rent organization in this county is dissolved forever. Such a result, it is true, has not been effected until it has inflicted trouble and misery upon the State; but that will rather enhance the satisfaction which every good man will feel at the dissolution of this organization. ‘The election of the several democratic nominees for Judges of the Court of Appeals, is conceded by the lead- ing whig paper of this city. ‘The Comptroller and Attorney General of this State bave published cards in the evening papers, pronouncing several statements in the Argus, in regard to their be- haviour at the late election, “ false and calumnious.”’ The musical world is in extacies at each performance of Christy's minstrel: Puitapecenta, June 10, 1847. ‘The announcement in the last intelligence from Vera Cruz that a lamentable duel had occurred at China, be- tween two lieutenants of the Virginia regiment, and that both were killed, created very little notice here at the time. It has since been ascertained, however, that one of the rash and unfortunate combatants was & Philadel- phian, the son of Francis Mahan, well known as the publisher of the fashion plates for tailors, He becamo attached to a Virginia company of volunteers, under the following circumstances, A corps mustering atRichmond, Va bad their numbers nearly completed, when some dis- contentarising betweem them and the Capt.,a great por- tion withdrew their names, and the commander was lett with but # fraction of his complement, In order to re- pair this dilemma he came to this city, and with the ai a young Mahan, who was then « lieutenant in Col. Lee's company of Union Fencibles, 51 recruits were ob- tained, and he left the city with them, having had promise that he should be elected to a Lieutenancey. — On arriving at Richmond the other officers and men de- murred to this, but having a majority of his friends in the company, they elected him to the post. ‘The ill feel- ing engendered’ in consequence, has, it is supposed, led to the fatal affray in which he has been cut off at the early age of 23, Ree hopes of his friends and inflicting intense anguish upon the family circle, thus robbed of its most endeared member. The deceased married at a very early ‘age a young lady of this city, not more than 16, who is now left a widow at the age of 19, with two infant children, one having been born sines the departure of its father. ‘A decision was this morning made in the case pending for some time in the District Court, brought by General Leslie Coontbs. against the Bank of Kentucky.to recover $20,000 for Professional services as a lawyer in obtaining the return of Hosea J. Levis from Texas to this city.— First, having procured pardon from the Governor, in order that he should appear as a witness in atrial be- tween the Kentucky and Schuylkill banks, to recover from the latter the moneys received by Levis from the sales of stock of the former bank. The jury returned a fa of $14,500 in favor of Gen. Coombs, which, with 600 received on sccount.makes his whole fee $15,000. A pretty clever sum. Thejourney of Gen. Coombs to Texas ‘was not undertaken selely to procure the return of Le- vis, but the main object was to procure the release of his son, then s prisoner in Mexico.
