TELEGRAPAAG FURTHER FROM MEXIcC. The Retaking of Nautla. ic. dic. de. New Ontraws, May 28. We have further particulars from Mexieo, but nothing much later. ‘The Delta's oorrespondencesays Rio Frio ts the only point on the road from Puebla to Mexico that is Mkely to give the army any trouble. If Santa Anna shouldtakea stand there, with adequate artillery and complete batte. ries, he might bother us; but our armies have fought more serious battles, and we have no want of men to drive him back. Santa Anna in his last message stated to the Mexicans that they had now an opportunity of making some diffi- oulty for the Americans, however their army might pre- sent itself, and he is furnishing the works with good cannon, supposing the commissioners appointed to su- perintend the defence of the capital had selected Rio Frio, as the only available point of defence, and would remove thither their cannon, and he intended to defend the city, Another battle was daily expected. Gen, La Vega arrived in bad health at Jalapa, by way of Perote, where he remains. The Commercial Times and Mercury mention the re- taking of Nautla, andthe flight of the 300 Mexicans. Later arrivals from Brazos bring nothing of interest. ‘There is ho confirmation of the defeat of Colonel Doa- iphan. The Kentucky cavalry proceed homeward ina few days. Wasuinaton, June 2, 1847, General Scott's Proclamation—The late News from Mewico—Suppreasion of the Press. General Scott's proclamation has given birth to mach speculation as to its authorship—neediessly, as I con- ceive, for among those to whom the General's style is familiar, there can scarcely be a doubt that it was penned, or at all events, dictated by himself. The National In- telligencer, although it does not positively declare ite belief in the surmises attributing the authorship of the proclamation to the administration or some of its em- ployées, still exhibits scant courtesy to the General, in doubting that it could emanate from himself, It is cruel thus to attempt to deprive General Soott of the credit of this able document. Ihave reason to believe that it was not written by any person connected with the administration. On the contrary, there is scarcely « doubt that it is really what it purports to be, General Scott’s own proclamation. Those papers that have at- tributed its authorship to Mr.Trist, or to some body else in the civil employment of the government, have paid General Scott a very sorry compliment in supposing that he would accord his name and paternity to « production not his owm. Who that gives the General credit for the possession of the commonest principles of honer or independence, could for a moment believe that he would thus play the obsequious automaton ? Bravo's proclamation, promulgated by Trigueros, oall- ing upon all Mexicans between the agen of fifteen and sixty to enrol themselves for the defence of the capital, would seem to argue a determination to resist the ad- vance of our army on the city of Mexico, ‘The liberty of the preas, too, is suspended ; the proclamation to this effect setting forth the abuse of this liberty, to the great detriment of the republic. Whatever evil might arise from alicentious press, certainly a trammelled press, that writes to order and speaks with hated breath, is calculated to do more mischief, by infecting the very at- mosphere of the nation with the leprosy of slavery. The experiment was an unwise and an unsafe one. It is net in this age, or in any republic on this continent—even though that republic be Mexico—that the voice of the press is to be stifled with impunity ; and the military party, who have essayed to curb this mighty element within bounds and limits, will find their attempt as vain as that of the Persian despot who tried to bind in chains the billows of the ocean. ‘They will find thet, in issuing this proclamation, they have written the doom of their ‘incipal European cities, to forward | own faction. he will hear of something to his adva iving authentie information whereby sai e fouud, or heard of, shall be well rewarded for the: Li j also be addressed to Mr. George Ho a juces all that man undertakes to impart a thorough knowledge x mouth. The telegraph announced the arri val of the Hibernia at an early hourin the morning, and it was soon ascertained that a few ot our merehants had received a knowledge of its character. Holders, how- ever, refused to sell at any price, until authentic intel- ligence was received. During the evening the character of the news became generally known, and some holders offered to sell Howard street and Susquehanna at $10, and J learn that a few small lots were taken up at this rice, Perhe question of allowing locomotives to pass through our strects is up for consideration before the Counc! of Baltimore, and it is generally thought will become a law, It is evtimated that it will cause a saving of nearly $100,000 to the three companies ‘The State Temperance Convention of Baltimore closed its session in Baltimore yesterday, and, as usual, closed in # general row. An investigation has been made by the Coroner of Camden county, with respect to the body of the female found in the woods a few days since, and the jury sum- moned by him have been forced to come to the conolu- sion that a most foul and unnatural murder has been perpetrated. The scull of the unfortunate exhibited to the satisfaction of the medical gentlemen fractures which have evidently been caused by blows with an axe. A female that lived with one of the farmers in the vici- nity, known as Mary Ann Williams, is supposed to have been the victim, as she disappeared from the neighbor- hood very mysteriously. The fractures of the skull ex- tended from both sides, towards the crown; the upper jaw, from the eyes, was gone, and the appearances were that that portion of the face had been hacked away after death with some sharp cut ting instrument for the purpose of preventing identi- fieation of the person of the deceased. The vertebrae of the neck wat alto broken, and there can be but little doubt that the head had been severed from the body The base of the skullwas broken off, showing that vio. lence had been inflicted. The lower jaw had a fracture | near the centre, as if inflicted by a si instrument, | and from the circumstance that the apo | alongside of this fracture were discolored by the bi coagulating around the gash, this wound is believed to have been inflicted while the unfortunate was alive; jar | most likely it was the first blow with which the inhuman box 1,470 Post Offic bove favorite packet, or any of the Black Ball thence ‘on, the Tet" sod ith of crery Pirfende,’ ces have drafts ‘temand, on the or on MES & CO.
