We wore favored last evening with an introduction to State of the Flour Markets. Mr, MoMahon has re- | strect sells ls freely at 623¢ a 68 cts., one sale of 4,000 bush- sided in Mexico for a number of years, has travelled over a great pertion of the country, und is very compe- ‘tent to form an accurate opiuion as to whether the Mexi- can nation will be induced to seek a peace after our ar- my shall have taken possession of the capital. He states that intelligence of the surrender of Vera Crus was re- ceived in Zacatecas, without baving any effect to damp the ardor of the populace—on the contrary. it appeared to incite them to the adoption of measures for making a more determined resistanve to the advance of our troops through the country. ‘The clergy are awakening to the necessity of opening their coffers, and are now acting in concurt with the state governments in providing means for resistance. This action of the clergy gives increased confiden: e to the people, who everywhere ure enthusins- tio and determined. Notwithstanding all these evi- dences of enthusiasm, our informant thinks they cannot again be brought to oppose Gen. Scott on his road to the city of Mexico in sufficient force seriously to obstruct his march. He is of opinion that Gen, Scott will reach there without coming to another general engagement; Dut when there, he can see no good réagon for supposing oe peace will be sulicited—the clergy consider their yery existence as stuked on the issue, aud so great is their influence over the people, that no power exists in Mexico to make peace unless they sanction it. It is with the clergy that peace must be made—they are the head and front of the government. ‘The paper before us is the official organ of the State of Zacatecas, and its ton idence of the falsity of a ru- mor circulated at Vera Crus, which we gave in our pa- per, that that State among others was anxious to throw off the yoke of Mexico, and form a treaty with the Uni- ted States Government, independent of the Mexican nation. The State goes heart and soul with the Gov- ernment in all its measures to repel invasion, We have had translated, and give bulow extracts from two letters which appear in the Zacatecano of the 6th, One is from Don Manuel Ic: surgeon in the Mexican army, to the editor of the paper, giving an account of tl Jisposition made of the wounded on Santa Anna’s retreat from Buena Vista. It has been denied that the Mexican loss in that battle was as great as at first repre- ponte: ere is conclusive evidence that their loss in killed and wounded was underrated in the statements first published, and that 6000 would not more than cover it. After mentioning that hundreds had died on the road and were left unburied, the writer proceeds :— “In the hospital of Agua Nueva, were left tifty-nine wounded, two doctors, one medicine chest, and provisions for one month; in Incarnacion 214 wounded, two doctors and two months’ provisions; in Salado 42 ‘wounded, one months’ provisions and necessary medicines, with three doctors; in Cedral a hospital tal supported by the neighbor- hood and the authoritis 13 wounded, attended by a surgeon of the place; in Mistahnste 348 wounded three medicine chests, one tierce of blankets, one hundred and fifty sheets, and four doctors."? he other letter is from the surgeon of the regular hospital in San Luis. It was with the division of the army that retreated to this place that the majority of the wounded were carried. He says: “I will soon receive 847 wounded, which, added to the 587 here already, will make the extraordinary num- bea of 1484, For all these I have neither blankets, sheets, nor any of the necessaries they require. The els delivered on board boat at 72’ cts. Oats are scarce, and in demand. Sales 38a 44 cts. In the Eastern mar- ket they are still advancing. The Cotton Crop. The Mobile Register of Monday the 16th inst. , The period has arrived when it is proper to refé indications in regard to the prospects of the the new year. Uatil within some ten days the general tenor of advices from the country was favorable, the stands for cotton and corn both being considered good. Since then, however, we regret to learn that the cold nights and prevalent north winds have had an injurious effect upon the young cotton, giving it what planters cal the “sore shin; producing insects that have al- ready wrought injury to the plant, On the river and tow lands many planters have been compelled to plough up and replant their grounds, and the uplands have also suffered in the same way, though to a limited extent. ‘The crop is backward for the season, and should the prevailing cool weather continue wruch longer, it must abridge the production. ‘These remarks apply to the region that looks to this place as a market. ‘The Crops. Great complaints are made of the injury which the wheat crop in the vicinity of Greenville, South Carolina, has sustained from the fly. It is said that many fields are almost entirely ruined, others are scarcely affected ; but the average crop, the ‘papers say, must be small. From all quarters of East Florida we receive the most gratifying accounts of the state of the crops. The co- Pious showers which have recently fallen havo been of incalculable advantage to the farmer, and an abundant harvest is firmly eounted upon by all. The weather has ‘been remarkably cool lately, so much so that it appeared to bea return of winter. During the month of April the highest range of the mercury in the thermometer was 87 degrees—the lowest 09. Out of the thirty days, twenty-five wore clear.—Jacksonville News, May 14.
