Mr, Thomas Vaux, formerly well known as a re- finer in Boston, and at that time in prosperous circum- stances, but who had lately become reduced to extreme poverty, committed suicide in Roxbury last week. The unfortunate man had become so reduced that a friend had obtained a permit for him to enter the almshouse at South Boston, though he advised him not to go at pre- rent, on accountof the sickness there among the emi- grants. Go Wednesday Mr. Vaux went into the shopof another friend and, holding up the permit, exclaimed, “© that I should live to come to this! I wish some one would shoot me through the head!” He was found to have killed himself exactly in that way. Mr. Vaux was 74 years old in April. His family connections are re- *pectable and wealthy. ‘The following are the particulars of a suicide, noticed “few daya since in the telegraphic reports from Pitts- burgh :—Elizabeth Richardson, daughter of Mr. J. Rich- ardson, bell-hanger, 3d street, aged ninetcen years, threw herself from the upper side of the Monongahela bridge. The distance is about 35 feet, and the depth of water only about two feet at that spot. She came direct from her father’s house to the bridge, attracting no par- ticular attention by her demeanour, and when way over the bridge, coolly took off her shoes and place: them aside, then took off her bonnet and tied it up to one of the iron cables by the ribbons. This done, she climbed on the railing and threw herself over. About the time she was falling, she was discovered by a gentle- man, who shouted and attracted attention on the wharf £0 soon that the splash was noticed by various persons. Five yawls were instantly manned, and in a few minutes she was taken out of the water. The ight side of her face was much discolored, but life was hardly extinct when the boat reached the wharf. Drs. Gazzam, Speer, and others were in immediate attendance ; but the vital spark had fled, ‘The cause of this ‘act iy not known, She was an amiable girl, of irreproachable character. Insanity was not the cause. She had been in ill health, and it is believed was laboring under a morbid state of mind, A statement is made to us in connection with this case, which we do not feel at liberty to suppress. She had been reading a novel on Monday night, con- taining in its detail a general outline a good deal like the part she acted. It was one of a young girl who had taken laudanum ineffectually, and then had thrown herself from a bridge, &0, The name of the novel our informant did not learn. It was found in her bed yes- terday morning.—Pittsburgh Gazette. On Thursday morning, Mrs. Lydia Agett, daughter of Mr. James Agett, respectable farmer of this town, was found a short distance from her father’s house in a small pond of water, perfectly lifeless. Wo have been unable to gather any of the particulars, other than from the evidences athand. It appears that on Wednesday af- ternoon she was seen to go in the direction of the pond, where she sat down by the side of a fence. Here it ap- pears she used a large carving knife, with which she nearly severed her left arm; and it is believed that after becoming faint from the loss of blood, she struggled for the water, and finally gotin sufficient depth to consum- mate the fatal deed, and terminate her life, Miss Agett was intelligent and beautiful; and about 20 years of age, and apparently one of the finest young ladies of the s0- ciety in which she moved. No cause is assigned, and none can be conjectured for this most unhappy affair.— Lyons Argus. ‘The ship fever is now Prevailing tos considerable ex- tent among the emigrants recently arrived at Baltimore. In several instances it has proved fatal, and is said to be contagious. Dr. Lawrence, one of the health officers, was taken with it, and is now quite ill. A young lad, named Ellersbee, whilst hunting a week or two ago in Bullock county, Georgia, thrust his hand into the hollow of a tree in search of @ rabbit, and was bitten by a rattlesnake. He iemediaitly oa sick, and died in five minutes after being conveyed home. ‘This is anniversary week in Boston.
