Wasninaton, May 23, 1847, Visiters to West Point. We are informed that Hon. Dixon H. Lewis, Senator from Alabama, and Hon. David L. Yulee, Sénator from Florida, are appoihted Visiters, from their respective States, to West Point Academy, this year; and that Col. Miles, late of the gallant army of Gen. Taylor, and Governor of Monterey, has been requested by the Secre- tary of War to be one of the Board also You may expect this deputation of Visiters in New York about the second or third of June, and we are as- sured they will be treated in a style commensurate with their distinguished merits, as citizens, and as servants of the government and of the people. ‘The appoiutieat of Mr. Yulee shows that both him- self and Father Ritchie are disposed to bury the hatchet and smoke the “ pipe of peace” touching the resolutions for the expulsion of the editor of the Union from the floor of the Senate ; provided, always, that this conces- sion is not to be construed into a disposition to compro- mise with Mr. Calhoun upon the subject of those resolu- tions. CANALES. Puitapetrnta, May 24, 1847. Laying the Corner Stone for a N-w Church Volun- teers—Socrety of United American Mechanics—Th Slave Case and the Abolitionists— Stocks, $c. An immense gathering witnessed the laying of the corner stone of the new St. Augustine Church, yester- day afternoon. The new building is to be 61 feet front by 192 deep, of the Roman Paladian school of architec- tecture, the front surrounded by a tower 200 feet high, crowned by a dome. A volunteer company forming at Camden, under the requisition upon New Jersey, already {contains forty Philadelphians on the roll, and one of them has been elected captain. They will be mustered into ser- vice during the present week. ‘The society of United American Mechanics, of this Gity, turned out nearly one thousand strong, yesterday, to attend the funeral of a deceased member. The abolitionists stole a march upon the owners of the slave Isaac Brown, on Saturday, through which he was released from custody, and is now, probably, safe in Ca- nada. The revocation of the first writ issued by the Governor in order to issue a second upon the finding of the grand jury of Calvert county against Brown as a fugitive from justice, of course set aside the committal by virtue of which he was detained in prison. The claimants neglecting to have a second committal lodged at the prison, the counsel for the accused took advantage of the circumstance, and taking out a writ de homine re- legianvo, the keeper was obliged to release Brown from custody. The case was to have been heard this morning, but by this cunning device the claimants have been thwarted in their hopes of getting him back into servitude. This case has been the ex- clusive topic of conversation about the court house this morning. and the opinions upon it are as diversified as they could well be. Judge Parsons appears vexed at the escape, as it would have been avoided had he issued a secoud commitment. This morning he sent an officer to the prison for Isaac Brown, and on the return of non est being made, he issued a warrant for (he arrest of Mr. Freed, the jailor, to answer for the escape of his prisoner. and he will probably be bound over to answer. The friends of the al have. in the meantime, in- stituted a suit against all the officers and witnesses from Baltimore for covspiraey. aud but for the interference of Judge Parsons, who pronounced them not liable to ar- rest while here as witnesses, they would have been taken into byer ™ es of Stocks at Philadelphia. Yesterday, Marcus J. Reynolds, of this city, who was lately nominated at the whig judicial convention for judge of the Court of Appeals, wrote a letter positively declining the nomination, which he sent to the editor ofthe organ of the Executive, with a courteous re- quest that it might be published; the letter was detained, and the publication of it refused. Bevator Folsom, of New York, arrived at Congress Hall to-day, where his lady has remained since the ad- journment. Chancellor Walworth dined at the Delaware Hotel to- aay: he appeared in deep mourning for his excellent who lately died ; the Chancellor, however, seems to be in fine health and’ spirits; he has arrived at an ad- vanced age, and I am confident he will not regret the happy opportunity to enjoy awhile the sweet retire- ment of home, which the extinction of his present office will afford him. Mr. Prindle, the gentlemanly and indefatigable Clerk of the House, remains at his hotel in this city, and is at- tending to his official business; he has occupied a pro- minent position in the House during the session, and it is not too much to say for him that he has upon several occasions preserved that body from temporary dissolu- tion; he has a perfect knowledge of parliarrentary law, and he was therefore of infinite help to a presiding offi. Mr. cer who was entirely unused to that position. Prindle was offered the nomination of Clerk of Court of Appeals, but he declined it; it may be with justice that he is one of the most capable and faith- ful officers that was ever attached to the House of As- sembly. Reynolds, of this city, has also consented to accept the whig nomination for Judge of this Court, not, however, with any hope or desire for an election.
