TROUBLE WITI THE INDIANS, Position of the Forces under Colonels Tremont and Price, ute between Gen, Kearny and Commo- dore Stockton still Unsettled, Lightning on the Wires. ic. Se. den Purtavecenta, May 24, 1847. Lieut. Peck arrived at St. Louis on the 17th instant nta Fe, which place he left April 9th, Col, Price was still there, and all was quiet, though apparently slumbering over a voleano. The general opinion is, that the Mexicans required only competent leaders to rebel against our civil govern- ment Judge Beaubien was still engaged in trying former In- surgents, Lieuts, Beal, Jbot and others, left San Diego, Feb. 2th, bringing important intelligence At Taos, the court had condemned a large number of the insurgents, eleven have been hung, and many whip- ped. Six were hung the day Lieut. Talbot passed through Taos. ‘These executions created great excitement among the Mexicans, and efforts were making to atimulate insur- rection, and raise volunteers for a rebellion, The Al- caldeand many influential men were opposed to the movement, The Indians were very troublesome. They attacked Lieutenant Peck’s party three times, and wounded one of his escort. They stole all the horses and mules. They were Pawnees and Camanches, Several of our troops were badly wounded in subduing them. Col, Fremont was at Cuidad dos Angelos, Feb, 25th, acting as governor, appointed by Stockton. Gen. Kearney, at San-Diego, had been joined by Lieut Col, Cooke and his Mormon battalion in splendid condi tion and health, and all proceeded together, and hayo be Joined by two artillery companies, Col, Stevenson’s New York regiment had not arrived February 9th The dispute between Stockton and Kearny remains unsettled. Wasuinaron, Saturday Night, May 22, 1817 The Mexican War—Mr. Calhoun’s Defensive Line and the next Congress—Plan of Mr. Soulé—Plan of the Lieutenant General—Coincidence between these Plans and the late hint of Father Ritchie in reference to the clergy—Extracts in Proof, with the defeat of the Lieut. General—the general plan of “ contributions,” including the clergy, abandoned—Difference between “contributions” and “ sequestrations,” §c. gc. Would any one believe that this Mexican war grew out of John Tylex’s vetoes of the Bank ? If it were worth the candle, the fact could be established. The important question, however is, not how we got in, but how we are togetout. The organic recorder protests against the defensive line of Mr. Calhoun, on the ground that it would be an interminable prolongation of the war. But it is not;clearly ascertained that the conquest of a peace by running down the Mexicans as the French have bee: running down the Algerines. will save the necessity of a frontier army of occupation. Indeed, we understand, that in the verbal plan of peace proposed by Senor Ato- cha, and published in the Mexican papers, a frontier U S. army of occupation of 10,000 men, was one of the sti pulations for the security of the peace proposed. But, be this as it may, a defensive line, defended by an arm- ed occupation, will be imperative upon the United States in the settlement of a treaty, whether that line «hall be the isthinus of Tehuantepec, the line of the Sierra Madre, or Mr. Calhoun’s line of the Rio Grande, and the parallel of 32 degrees westward from El Paso del Norte From the ominous silence of some of the whig presses on this subject, and the open advocacy of a defensive line by others, we may venture to assume that with « whig majority in the next House of Representatives, one of their first measures will be (if the war be still pending) to ¢ he administration to a recall of the army to a defensive line, and more likely than any other the defensive line of Mr. Calhoun, muse that this line will secure the suffrages of the Calhoun men in the House and in th abe: At the last session Mr. Calhoun stood in the Senate “solitary and alone” upon this prajet, as did old Bullion at first ‘upon the notorious expunging resolutions, Mr Soulé, however, in his speech intimated a partial acqui- escenee with some modifications, very ingenious, but scarcely practicable. The following ix the outline of Mr. Soulé’s plan, from his speech in the Senate Februar 22, the very day of the meeting of Santa Anna wit! Gen. Taylor at Buena Vista :— * “As'for himself,” said Mr. Soulé, “he would tender to Mexico again a peace, (Mr. Trist has gone down far that purpose,] and forthe purpose of enabling the President to come to that,he would cheerfully go for the bill before the Senate [the $3,000,000 bill, which has semething to do, we suppose, with th ewod overture If refused by Mexico, he would take a military position In the althy region in ior of Mexico, (precisely what fi n & line of commupica- wat Vera Cruz, (Of course all right.) He ributions on the clergy. (The idea is not ather Ritchie, and Mr. Soulé is Catho- Lic, He would levy contributions on the clergy, mer- chants, and great [an nd owners, (the plan of “contribu. of the Lieutenant General Uhat was to be.) and ar. that. This plan could be easily carried out to mnities and expenses of the war, for it uld embrace @ summary inspection by right of milita- ry search warrant, of all Uke churches, haciendas, ran- chos, and jacales in the country.| Ina word, he would bring Mex! to the feet of the United States.’? Mir, Soule further proposed to cut off the Northern provinces of Mexico, to ivt them stand independent un- Ul they should, by their own option, amuex themselves to the United States, or re-annex themselves to Mexico. His s rather too complicated for practical purposes, especially in the latter recommendations, In ite main points, though, it tallies mst remarkably with the plan of the war pursued, even to the suggestion of Father Kitehie, «f a" sequestration” of the .hurch property Now, whether Mr. Soulé took the hint from the plan of the Lieutenant General, and desired as a young Sena. tor, Lo prove his orthodoxy in endorsing that which had been approvedyby theadministration; or whether he led off with this recommendation, of “levying upon the clergy,” we cannot determine. It is fair to presume, ever, that the officially recoguized plan of Col. Ben- ton suggested to Mr. Soule the idea of ** military contri- butions,’’ embracing the clergy in the category. Another thing is very certain, Had the bill for the Lieutenant General passed the Senate, the plan of the Lieutenant General would have gone into operation, em- bracing “foreed loans’ from the Church, with checks upon thi nkrupt government of Mexieo for payment In his vindication of the President of the , pertaining to this subject of the Lieuten- ant ( al at the Inst session, Mr. Benton says: “T shall not state my pas ~| Wonder what it was |) but I will say of it, that, bestdes intending a result [what yas chat result ’l” it proposed to carry on the war, while the the case of invasive war—the invaders to be paid and subsisted by the invaded. Contributions regularly le- vied, duties regularly collected, would accomplish these was war, according to the usage of all nations in objects, and leave the U ted States free, or nearly free, from the expenses of the war.” A thousand to one that this plan embraced “ contri. butions” from the clergy. How else could the expenses ofthe army be paid from “ contributions,” if the church was not made to contribute? The President assented to the plan—the officer to be appointed to carry it out was ruled out by the 8 ground. This, recent broad hint of Father Ritehie, tion of the chureh property. ‘The p! man’ General, however, did not propose to sequester said pro- perty; but to take it, and give a check to the amount taken upon the Government of Mexico, the United States pledged to make her pay, we sippore. T ‘ ate, and the whole scheme fell to the e suppose, is the only authority for the it the “ sequestra- of the Lit t whole scheme, in ail its 4] pee of making reetitu tion upon the church, havin nm abandor it is | seareely evsary to pursue this branch of our pati gation further, Returning to the main question of the probability of » whig House, and the further probability of the reeall of our armies to the occupation of a defensive line, it will be useless to make further remark than that should the occupation of the Mexican capital fail to bring the Mexi- can authorities to terms.the choice must rest between the occupation of @ defensive line, or the indefinite military cecupation of the entire Mexican con! oracy. Briefly, then, our opinion is, that if the war be uot ended by the meeting of Congress, it will be one of the first measures of Congress to reduce its field of exercises to the occupation of Mr, Calhoun’s defensive line, W Wasnisorox, May 22, 1847 A Duel Stopped. Two young disciples of Hippocrates, to wit, Dr, Brax- | ton and Dr, Perkins, of King George Court House, Vir~ ginia, as wo understand, recently extended a discussion, on some point connected with the science of medicine, to that extreme which Professor Espy would call the
