to meet on Tu The Case of Lieut, Hunter—The Judicial Nominations. 1am informed by who arrived here from ee eae na ithae adnan Alvarado, i» now detained asa Caactes tors The Lieutenant bas been de- of hiscomman’ «nd will not be permitted to re- ‘ar home in a frivate or steamer; he is, therefore, de- tained until he can be sent home ina store ship. I also understand, from @ reliable source, that the President has evinced disapprobation of Com. Perry’s reprimand of this brave officer, who, when he arrives at New Or- Jeans, will be warmly reqsived by the citizens. The State judicial nominations have now reached you. and the public have been advised, through the Herald, of the names of the candidates for Judges of the High Court of Appeals, ght caxiovste express my settled seca and mt Be pate confidence in the ultimate safety of t] owe ua baal pce ar al ial offices is becoming more and more i enn Sen it should be kept Sten ~ ne} an Sr aa, Annas, isan cctbisbeeat t an anomaly in government, Sad TC ing which ‘necomest eutrusts the largest liberties to virtue ; ne A prostrates all those saepetiés 41 strongly contended should be built up Sarath ju lcial department of the govern- ment, to defend it the terrible tempests of revolu- tion and insurrection. It reposes anwdmportant confi- dence in the popular aE which could never have received the concurrence of any of the names on that immortal list of jurists whose commentaries alone re- main to be quoted throughout christendom as an evi- dence of their worth. ere should, therefore, be an abandonment of partizan customs, and every man should observe that there exists a great and powerful necessity that good and virtuous men should be selected to these offices. The democratic nominations for the Court of Appeals, are peotaniy as unexceptions- ble as they’ could wel . Viee Chancellor Whitt , one of the whig candidates for Ju of this Court, and who was a candidate for tl office of commissioner of the code, is also a man of high social qualities, and great legal acquirements. I do not doubt the pessience a of any of the State nominations. but in thejudicial district in which | am, there has been concocted and perfected a union of the whig party, with the tenantry known as “anti renters;” that is to the whigs the advice of the editor of an pats paper here, have nominated a person for judge of this trict, who is confessedly a bcos anti renter; and who isalso the nominee” of that This act has been deliberately committed, and boar earnestly trust that for once the whig party, rather than elect ® man who has been forced upon them, and whose election must place the public peace in |. will suffer eternal dissolution. Defeat is bet- er than victory with ignominy. An anti-rent con- vention assembied in this city to-day, and nominated Frederick Whittlesey, Addison Gardiner, and Ambrose L. Jordan for Judges of the Court of Appeals. The eonvention was unable to agree upon the name of a fourth candidate; and a somealtion of 1 of nine, being one from each of the anti-rertt counties, was appointed to select a suitable candidate. The anti-renters also no- minated Mr. Lamport—the whig candidate—for clerk of the Court of Appeals. Important to Inspectors of Elections and Boards of Canvassers. Secrerary’s Orrice, ALsany, May 21, 1847. ‘The undersigned deems it his duty to call public at- tention to the important fact. that under the existing laws the Boards of County Canvussers will be required lay, the 8th day of June next, the day after the election of Judicial Officers, prescribed by the act. chapter 276 of the Laws of 1817, for the purpose of estimating and canvassing the votes given in their re- spective counties at the suid election. It will, therefore, be necessary for the Inspectors of Elections, or one of them, to deliver the original certified statements of the votes, made out by them,to the officers designated by law, as suon as may be practicable after the same shall be completed at the close of the polls. ‘The Board of County Canvassers cannot proceed to es- timate the votes given on the day they are so required to meet, unless all the statements from every election district in the county shall buve been received, but must postpone the canvass until the next day, and this, it is resumed, will afford sufficient time. if proper diligence is used by the recurning officers, to have all the returns brought in,and the statements canvassed and estimated The views above expressed have been submitted to all the State Canvassers, except one, and they concur with the undersigned in the coustruction above given to the existing election laws. The following certificate should be inserted before the ate, in forms Nos, 19,20 and 21, of the forms and in- structions :— * We certify the above statement isin all respects cor- reot.” Dated, &c. ‘The publishers of newspapers in the State are respect- fally requested to give this circular one or two insertions, the subject being of great importance, and call public attention to it. BENTON, Secretary of State. Mr. Pakenhain bears with him the kindest wishes of this entire community. In the high station which he has occupied for more than throw years, his conduct has been such as to secure universal approbation. Sustain- {ug with ability and firmness tho interest of his country, he has at the same time conciliated the regard of all the functionaries of our government; while his plain and un- ostentatious manners, and the frankness and kindness of is disposition, have rendered him a welcome visiter in our social circles. We part from him with regret, and shall hail his return to this city with unaffected pleasure. Mr. Pakenham, this morning, presented John F. Quevillion, of St. Lin, Lower Canada, was burned to the ground on Thursday, the 6th instant.— Madame Quevillion and her children, four in number, were burned to death. The Quebec Minerve says the unfortunate mother had thrown herself in the midst of fe flames to save her children, and lost her life through her maternal devotion. The bodies have been found horribly burnt and mutilated, and have been buried to- gether. Mr. Quevillion was absent at the time of the accident, and it is unknown how the fire originated. About 8 o’clock on the morning of the 22d ult., the prairie ship was loosened from her moorings on the lands of Lindsey Lewis, twenty miles south-west from Indepen- dence, descended slowly into the bottom of s field, and turning the brow of a hill, came up with a graceful sweep, passed the boundary line, and came to an anchor on the edge of the great north-western prairie. The ground was extremely soft, into which the wheels sunk deep, and very much retarded her progress. The day was not, by any means tavorable to the experiment in the frat ‘hero was Dut little wind—in the next, the ground, mm the rains of the previous night, was not in a fit con: dition for the freo running of « carriage of any kind— Independence Expo: Sales of Stocks at Boston.
