Rochester this A geutioman who bes errived Rag that the Meet of boats Tio. delayed by & sand bar, four miles eust-of-Utica, and by low water at Herkimer, No boats from Rochester had passed Herkimer this morning. eo Afairs in Washington, mui i sloth May 8, 1847. The Victory of Cerro Gordo—Santa Anna—General Taylor and “the Presidéncy— Mr. Walker—Mr. John W. Davis, No despatches have as yet been received from General Scottdn relation to the brilliant victory of Cerro Gordo. Private letters have been received from Vera Cruz, con- *aining nething moro in detail than what is given in the New Orleans papers. It is doubted if General Scott sill write before his occupation of Jalaps. His next ‘despatch will probably be dated from the Capital of the Department of Vera Cruz. ‘The general order issued the night before the battle of Cerro Gordo, bears evidence of the assured confidence of ‘the General-in-chief in the result of the battle. He gave specific directions for the pursuit to the walls of Jalapa ; ordering, for this purpose, that each soldier should be furnished with two days provisions, and that they should not return to the position then occupied before Cerro Gordo, but should press on, without pause, tothe capital of the Department, The alacrity with whieh he followed up his victory, is deserving of the highest praise, I can gee no reason to find fault with Sante Anna for flying from the field. He can certainly be of more ser- viee to his country, alive and at large, than killed or captured. If his flight contributed to the defeat of his army, it is another affair—he deserves, in that case, all the scorn that can be heaped upon him ;—but if, after a gallant defence of his works, he fled to escape capture, his conduct is altogether justifiable. It is only when a man can no longer be of service to his country, that he should “ stake bis life upon a cast.” Honor does not, in in any other caso, demand self-immolation. It would seem that General Taylor is to be foreibly dragged from the camp where he is valiantly vindi- +cating his country’s honor, to be put up as a butt for the abuse of one party, and the interested adu- lation of another. For the sake of the country on whose records he has #0 honorably recorded his name, I say, God forbid the old soldier should depart from his determination to discountenance this attempt to drag him prematurely into a political canvass; not that ! would not at the proper time bestow upon him all the honors that a grateful country may with prudence concede to deserts so high as his, but 1 would not em- barrass the movements of the warrior, by unsoasonably throwing the toga over his armor—nor would I bid him quit the field of his glory, to become the tool of one party, or a mark forthe abuse of another. The people will, in their own good time, reward him according to his merits, He isnot aman to be the puppet of the poli- tiolans. Mr. Walker is still confined to his room, and I regret to say his physicians entertain doubts of his ultimate reeovery. His disease is inflammation of the bronchia, and his medical attendants apprehend a sympathetic in- flummation of the lungs, or that acute inflammation of the bronchia may at any moment ensue. He has boen enjoined to preserve absolute silence, and all business is positively interdicted. is active mind must feel sadly chafed under this regimen. I regret to see that Mr, John W. Davis, thelate Speak- er of the House of Representatives, has declined a re- election to Congress. His absence from his coun- try’s councils will be a national loss, A more ac- complished, dignified, or impartial officer has never presided over the House of Representatives. To an intimate and critieul acquaintance with parliamentary rules aud observruces, he united the greatest firmness and unpartiality in their application. His official in- tercourse was marked with a spirit of dignity and bland courtescy, which gained him the esteem of both parties. 1 trust his public life is not yet closed, and that he may again appear in even a higher position in our public councils, to maintain the dignity of his State and of the country, At five o'clock this morning, the guns ushered in a day of Jublive, in honor of our victories in Mexico, from Palo Alto to Cerro Gordo. To-night the city will be brilliantly illuminated, and fireworks and bonfires will conclude the rejoicing. GALVIENSIS, Wasuinatow, May 8, 1847 The War—The Victories of the War and the Costs of the War—Killed and Wounded for the first twelve months. “The war, which for a space did fail, Now trebly thundering, swelled the gale.—Scorr. At noon the joyous ringing was repeated, and this evening we are to have some bril lidnt fireworks at the navy yard, and a pretty general exhibition of {lluminations and bonfires all over the city. No more appropriate day could have been selected for these demonstrations, than the anniversary of the battle opening the war, unless it were the day selected by New York—being the day on which they doubtless received the news of the battle which xery likely closes the war, and winding up at the place of beginning W give up, of course, to New York When sie attempts to * ree gen Wasnimoron, May 4, 1847. Colonel Dizon S. Miles, Quite a sensation was caused. here yesterday, by the ®ppearance among us of Col. D. 8. Miles, now Major of the 34 Regiment of United States Infantry. Hem & Baltimorean, and the great question among his towns- men just now is, who shall do him most honor? An ele- gant sword has been voted him, and it is said to be, in all respect, wortny the hero and theyman. Other mani- festations of the popular estimate of his important ser- Yices, await him. We hope he will not decline the prof- fered honors, for it is not often our citizens are permit- ted totender them to one more worthy. Col. M. visited Washington in relation to matters strictly offtcial, yet his presence here did noteseape the notice of thehighest authorities. Some incidents in the career of this officer are so highly honorable to him, as soldier, that I am induced to refer to them here. To his fellow-officers, it is well known that within a few years, Capt. Miles re- signed a situation in the staff in consideration of the greater opportunities for active service, afforded by the line of the army. His conduct was then every whore applauded, and his friends confidently predicted his dis- tinction whenever that desired opportunity should offer. At Corpus Christi he was in command of a company of the 7th Regiment of Infantry. As such, he marched to the Rio Grande. At Fort Brown, during the bombard- ment, he was so honorably distinguished in his zeal and soldierly conduct, that General Taylor called the parti- cular attention of the government to his services. Im- mediately after the battles of May, the duty of recruit- ing ofteer, which would have removed Col. M. to a nortl , and to the bosom of his fami- ly, was Offered him, ‘but his sol erly spirit induced him to decline it, and prefer active command while his services were demanded in the field.— He chose to march for Monterey in command of his regi- ment. The history of that great battle and. eapitulatio ion records the achievements of this officer. He has alread: iy received two brevet commissions—that of major for hi services at Fort Brown, although not in command, and that of Lieutenant Colonel at Monterey. He first took possession of Ci and waa for several weeks its civil and military governor, His merits in this capacity were so conspicuous, that he was afterwards appointed to the same duties at Monterey and Saltillo. General Taylor knew his merits. fter the brilliant siege of Vera Cruz, inwhich he has been again distinguished, Col. Miles re- turns for # brief season to his family and friends, Honor, then, to the chivalrous soldier. Other rewards await him from his government. OBSERVER. Sales i yy Boston.
