Wasninaton, Jan. 24. 1947. @eneral Taylor—Charge to Denmark—Mr. Cilley’s Pro- position—The Consular Bill. The letter of General Taylor, published lately, has | produced a strong sensation here. People regrot much the appearance of such a document. It is calculated to do the general a great deal of mischief, and can bave no good rosult. it will likely produce a call for the official despatches sent him from the War Department, the pub- Meation of which will, unquestionably, vindicate the con duct of the administration towards him. He has, since | the commencement of the campaign, been treated by the administration with the utmost kindness, and even indul gence, and the se timents breathed m this letter are not those which might be expected to result for such kind treatment. Tam persuaded that the General could never have authorised or anticipated the publication of this letter. He is a man of too much sound sense not to perceive the very unpleasant position in which it places him. A sol- dior should be a machine, moving at the command of his superior officer, and not allowing hivself to think of | avything but the most efficient means of carrying bis in- structions into execution. ‘To appear in an attitude of | ‘sntagonism to the Government of which he is the agent ‘and whose commands he is bound:o obey just as much ‘es hia subslterns aro bound to obey him, is to commit en act of indiscretion extremely censurable, to say the | least. 1 would wish to believe the lotter a forgery, al- though I tear it is but too genuine. : There is no truth in the rumor that General Taylor has beon recalled, or that he hus resigned. ‘The many | unfounded reports concerning him, have added to the excitement on the subject. Another unfounted rumor is, that Mr. Irwin, late | charge d’sffaires to Denmark, has been recalled, contra. | tala Mr. Irwin's ry to his desire. The fact is otherwire. recall is in accordance with his own express desire This gentleman isa brother in law of Mr. Walker, the | Seoretary of the Treasury, and | presumo he could have remained if such had been his desire. ‘The proposition of Mr. Cilley to withdraw our army from Mexico, meets with no sort of favor. Taylor, which hes raised here such an unnecessary excitement. | Gen. Gaines had retired at our call, or we should have | taken the liverty of inquiring for the public satisfaction, if the report is true, and we know, from the soldierly frankness of the brave old patriot, that if so, he would have said so on the spot. Assuming, however, thet it may be so, the whole | thing is explained. Gen. Taylor wrote to Gen. Gaines | as to an older soldier, having fought by his side ssa | ounger soldier in the last war. Gen.
