MILITARY INTELLIGENCE. {From the Richmond Republican, Dec. 23.) We understand the following gentlemen have been appointed, by the Governor Council of State, as offi- cors of the First Regiment of Virginia Volunteers :— John F. Hamtramck, of Jefferson county, Colonel ; Beverly barat of Warren county, Lieutenant Colo- nel; Jubal A. Earl ari of Franklin county, Major. These are excellent appointments, and reflect credit on the appointing power. Major Hamtramck, to whom the command bas been en‘rusted, isthe son of an old Indian fighter, was born in an Indian hut in the North. Western territory, then belonging to Vi inia, served | aserjeant in the last war under G: ral (thon Major) Taylor and afterwards graduated st Point, with the highest honors. He was awhile tant instructor of tactics, and received an appointment as lieutenant in the army, from which he was tra: red te indian agency ‘Col. H has all the requi nd some of the rience of a soldier—and being vigorous in mind and body, will de benor to and the Union. This | much we feel authorized in saying, from personal knowledge on the partof the writer of this paragraph. General Rendolph, of Warren, to whom the second place in the regiment has been assigned, is of a gallant stock, and hes proved himself a true man in all that cha- racte: graduate of West Point— wi jag of Queenstown Helghts, end with his own mnate apikod the first gun cap- ‘ured from the enemy. Atthe close of the war, Lieut. Randolph, with many other noble spirits, was disbanded on the reduction of the army, but is now ready for the new and honorable service: assigned him. Genarals Scott and Worth were witnesses of his gallantry, and will doubtlesahail bis eee with satisfaction. Major Kaily, of Franklin, is @ graduate of West Point, and is represented to us as a most accomplished officer. We kvow him, some years since, as a member of the Legialatare from his native county, and were prepo- sessed with his excellent qualities a8 a gentleman, anda man safest be signed ‘to adorn any station to which assigne: now three companies of volunteors at the beanneks in this city, allof which have been m' red into the U. $. service, to wit: Captain Scott’s Grey: id Captain Carrington’s Rap, he third company is from Alexaudri: led by Capt. [From the New Orleans Delta, Dec. 16) It was our pleasure jemareay a ai a oeprecenice with Dr. Wilson, of Rangers. Ho arrived here on the Panid a oye oh Monday eve ning, and is one of the last from Monterey —hav- ing left there on the 26th ult. Sickness was abating in the camp, and the wounde: nerally speaking, were rapidly recovering. Gen Butler among those whose convaleacent s meat slow. Worth, with about 1200 men, wasat Saltilio, where he found very comforta- ble quarters.” By the way, @ good story is told of old “Ri gh aud ine Ae who accompanied Gen. Worth’s to Saltillo, in connection with lace. As they approached within were met by acourier from the governor of the city, who presented to the General a very formidable looking despatch. A halt was called, and the Gei 'a interpreter was ordered to give a trans: lation of the document. It opened with an expostul of the injustice of the war on the part of the Ame! —alleging that it was prosecuted for the purposes of con quest, rapine and plunder—protested jegainst the further advance of the General’s forces—threatened him with retribution that must follow, and —— but the General stopped the translator in the middle of a sentence, with— h, oir” =“ No,” was the reply, *Thave not read half of it, yet !”” “0, VU hear no more of it,” said the General: “March!” He ordered the bugler to sound the a nce, and again the column was in motion The number of men fit for active as at Monterey at the present time, is about 3000. Of ther eo regiment is quartered in the city—the remainder are encamped at the Walnut Spriny From the representations which Doctor Wilson makes to us, Gen. Taylor cannot advanc: ith his forces from i Saltillo to San Luis Potosi. The Mexicans, in their’ re- treat, performed the march at @ great sacrifice of life: the Americans cannot accomp! ish it—first, because woul Jet fr out of the tanks, and thi deprive them of this necessary element of existence ; next, because they could find no provisions on the way —a distance of two hundred and filty miles—and because it would amount to an almost absolute impossibility to convey the necessary forage and wisions ever the mountains in the line indicated There would seem to be no probability, then, that a junction can be formed with the two wings of ou y at San Luis Potosi—the one marching from Tampi "the other from Montercy and Saltillo—which, ropert has been saying, is to be the movement. A repost circulated along the Rio Grande, that Santa Anna had challen; = Gon, Taylor to meet him with 30,000 men, in pitched battle, between San Luis Potosi and Saltillo. Rough and Ready replied, that vo soon ax he would have 10,000 efficient men under his command, he would meet him any where, whatever might be the strength of his forces. A few days before Doctor Wilson left Monterey, an express arrived there from Gen. Wool, at Monclova. It is not his prese: peer to join Gen. Taylor. In this by the instructions or advice of jatter. Col. Harney and his dragoons are at Chihua- into which they merched without fring a gun. n- they were cordially welcomed, and got from the authorities a decent blow-out into the bargain. The regular army at Monterey conduct seat with great Netter and regularity: not so, alw the volunteers. They and the Mexicans too o! = to difficulties, and homicides follow. On the day before Doctor W. left the camp, the body of a member of the Louisville Legion was found in a position which showed that be had been violently murdered. His comrades bu- ried him, and theypoxt day, the Doctor heard, wh reached eed Aey sallicd out and killed Mexicans. ir heard, that for this, Gen. Whatever the oe they were, at least, or- dered to countermarch from Matamoras. There was a report at Monterey, that Gen Ampudia had been tried by 4 military courtat San Luis Potosi, for his conduct at Monterey, and ordered to be shot! ‘Tue Free at Burravo.—At about halt past 11 o’clock last evening, a fire broke out in the exte; sive grocery establishment of Geo.
