The Tariff—Feelings of the Western Democracy— Policy of Silas Wright's Friends—The Naviga- tion Trade—Mr. Clay ~General Scott—Mr. Mc- Lean—Mr. Webster—Mr, Calhoun. I showed yesterday how, on the tariff question, as far as concerns Pennsylvania, the whigs are | likely to be check-mated should they pursue the | policy shadowed forth in Mr. Webste: speech | of Wednesday evening. The administration—at least Mr. Polk and a majority of the cabinet—are very sanguine «s to the success of the tariff laws | Sou of 1846 Th n men would greatly prefer main untouched, and some of the rats w ongly oppose a modifi- 1. There are some promineat members of ew York delegation, who, although first op- to the bill, are now determined that it shall \h 1 fair trial, and with that view will oppose any alteration or amendmént, even should such amendment or alteration favor the interests of their own State. The gentlemen to whom I al- lade are friends of Silas Wright. It is said that the real motives of their intended opposition to the proposed modification, lie deeper than the surface. Itis very certain that it woul@ be bet- ter for the political prospects of Mr, Wright should the tariff bill remain unaltered. Any thing that will tend to render the tariff ef 1846 accept- able to the people of Pennsylvania, will commen- surately diminish Mr. Wright’s chances for the next Presidency. This may now appear para- doxical, but its truth will be manifest before the lapse of three months. The whig candidates for the next Presidency arenumerous. Trust me, Mr. Clay’s friends no means despair of forcing him on the party at the next national whig convention. They are se- cretly, but, sieadily, at work ; and should nothing ocenr adverse to their hopes, | their efforts may yet make Mr. Clay ruler of the destinies of the re- public. This willin of one measure depend upon thie success of General Scott in the command he is about to assume.
