Wasutnaton, Dec. 5, 1846 Tactics of the Whig Party—Opposition to the War —Its popularity and results— ihe Whigs and the Tariff of 1846—The Coal and Iron Interest. The principles enunciated iri Mr. Welsste:’« | speech on Wednesday evening, although no doubt they will constitute the programme and ar- rangement of the whig tactics this session, do not meet the views of all thé whig Congressmen. We may therefore expect that dissensions will not be confined to the democratic party in Con- gress. On the whole, things look decidedly squally. Mr. Webster will no doubt give a partial suppor: tothe war. A large portion of the whig party wil) not be led to sustain the war, even by Mr. Web- ster’s example. In this they willdoa very wrong thing, both as regards the country and their own party. There can be no question that the war is universally popular throughout the country. When I say universally, [ mean that a majority of the people of each State is in favor of it; and indeed its absolute necessity and justice on ‘he part of the United States is admitted by the whole world. The so-called liberty party, who gene- rally contrive to interweave, in the dark web of their political creed, every extravagant absurdity, and who, like the buil in the arena that sees in every spot of red an adversary, profess to see the | spread and perpetuation of slavery in every ex- tension of the area of our territory, are too much enamored of their opposition to the war to be chounsed out of it by any portion of the whig party. They should be allowed to gloat over their bant- ling in all the luxury of undisputed paternity. ‘The whig party, as an organization, is too respec- table to stand sponsors, for it even, without mare- rial injury to their rerucsiions The extraordinary alacrity with which the re- uisite complement of troops hy been filled up— the enthusiasm which has stirred the nation to its very depths—the fact that three hundred thou- sand men have volunteered their services sinc: the commencement of hostilities, a period of scarcely six months—all go to prove the extraor- dinary popularity of the war with Mexico. That it will entail expense is obvious—every war does volunteers cannot leave their homes and sub- jet at a distance from those homes without in- eurring expense. That expense is very properly defrayed by the government. But this expense must be defrayed by the enemy, and we have now sufficient got inal in‘our kands to reimburse us for all Wale losses. To the na- tional decoaitts is added a territory greater in ex- tent than the United States at the formation of our government. But this is not all. Ma Webster has pledged himself to strive for a total repeal, and to accept no modification. I doubt the expediency of this resolve. It will but throw Pennsylvania, and in all likelihood, New York, into the hands of the democrats. The de- mocratic members of the Pennsylvania, dele; tion will vote for a modification, consult ter the coal and iron interests. The whigs w: “for the whole or none,” and I now ontertenn | very serious doubts whether they will not sue ceed by the aid of somo impracticable Southern democrats in defeating the proposed modifica- tion. The Peynsylvania democrats will go home to their constituents jand say that they coukt have had the law modified so as to consult for ae ip*brests of Pennsylvania but for whig oppo- sition, and so the whigs will entail on themselves the odium of standing in the way of the coal and iron interests. There is not the smailest doubt that this will be the result of their opposition. rALVIENSIS. ‘Wasuinorton, Dec. 5, 1646. Meeting of Congress—Preparations—Selecting Seats— Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations- Mr- Cass— Mr, Benton—Conciliation— Political War— San ta Anna—His Parole of Honor, $c. ‘There were, to-day, at 19 o'clock, about a hundred members of the House of Representatives, and upwards of twenty Senators, inthe city. There is no doubt that there will be a quorum present in both branches en Mon- day, and we will have the message of the President on the day ensuing. The Postmaster of the House and his clerks, were busy to-day, supplying members with stationery, and assorting the mails, which are not inconsiderable. ‘Lhe ball is as neat and comfortable as the East room of the Executive mansion ; the desks have been re-var- nishea, the cerpets cleansed to look good as new ; the spittoons resemble silver ; wood is in readiness to be ya wi ieeede ee ars eh pee vi conve Sener s Dem eden = ) our Seen 6 eels would ceeding of their Pola Cpe A : pa anda similar de
