didatos & Aanilemen of il hat adi i ir ry maotrepalisos the Union oHok vorabiy known to thé Mtolllgeaas of the Lenmiry asaman of profound erudition and scientific at tainments ; byt, in my humble opinion, it is Col, Tasistro who more than anybody else combines ee the accomplishments of a e reputation of a chaste and rons writer, the judgment of a sound and discricninating critic, a perfect acquaintance with the ancient and modern languages, with the man- ners and feelings of a thorough-bred gentleman. Col. Tasistro has also the advantage of extensive travel throngh the most interesting portions of Surope and of Asia, and a most enviable famili- arity with the productions of mind of every age und country. How far these exalted qualifica- tions will prevail against the several influences that may be bron, zht to bear in favor of Mr. Mar- koe, Iam not prepared to say. I merely assume to give you the results of general impressions, and those are decidedly favorable to Mr. Tasis- tro’selection. The fact alone of his having been somewhat harshly treated by an administration which he contributed so extensively to bring into power, has created a_ great deal of interest in his behalf at there is doubt whether, with all his talents, his extraordinary versatility of mind, and amiable traits of ch . he posses: sential quality, which, in the age we live in, can alone secure suc Fewix. = Baurimone, Sept. 17, 1846. Frosty Weather—San Pedvo Diving Bell Company—The Election for Mayor—A Privileged Character—Mar_ kets, $c. Broad cloth is in demand this morning for winter gar- meats, cotton goods having retired for the season. ‘There have been quite heavy frosts for the last two nights, whilst during the day the sun renders the weather delightfully comfortable. ‘The San Pedro Diving Bell Company has been re or- ganized again, and are about making another visit to the Spanish Main, to recever more of the coin sunk with the old frigate San Pedro. They say that they left in a hurry | the last time they were there, in consequence of having | heard of the war, and fearing an attack from privateers. ‘Their last day’s work is also said to have yielded them $700. Great consternation exists amongst the office holdersat | the City Hall in view of the mayoralty election. fact that all, or nearly all, the present incu men who have been accustomed to roll out of one office into another, men whose slice of bread always falls with the buttered side up, a great desire is evinced among the office seekers of their own party to have them removed. Some of them have heretofore been magistrates, others ave rolled out of the Collector's office into the Post the City Hall—in short, they have always been the “‘pap- | fed children of the public.’” The re-nomination of Major Da three years longer, and they fear that the office seekers will withhold their support irom Col. Davies so as to have a change tiow, so that the succeeding meyor will nave an opportunity of making a clean whig sweep, and that the present “outs” may have an opportunity of being the future “ins.” The whigs meet to-night for the nomina- tion of a candidate for the mayoralty, and it is now asser- ted that Major Law, the most popular manin the city next to Col. Davies, the democratic candidate, will be the nominee. Should he be nominated the race will bea tight one, the election depending principally on the dis- ction ‘among the office seekers. ‘here is little or nothing of intere: at present. on Baltimore street, raised by one of those gentry to be found in every communty, who get out of scrapes “with- out money and without price.” and slash their fellow men to their heart’s content with- out fear of law, judge or jury. iankets.—There have been no sales of Boa, st, any notices ble extent the |i some euquiry, and deale now holding. at $130, which anadvance. Pritaverruia, Sept. 17, 1846, A bright sun and an unclouded sky ushered in the day so long and anxiously expected by the members and friends of the order of Odd Fellows, and everything com: bined to make the procession and display one of unparal- elled magnificence. The hotels and boarding-houses are filled to overflowing with strangers, from all quarters; your good city having contributed its thousands to swell the multitude. The farmers, who furnish butter for our consumption, are taking advantage e@@fe demand for that article, by asking forty cents a pound, much to the an- noyance of our housekeepers. The formal dedication of the Hall took place at 9 o'clock this morning, and was witnessed by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, and deputations from the officials of the various encampments and lodges of this and other States. Of course the building would not accommodate more than this number, and in order that the multitude should have a sight of th m plicate of the atfair was afterwards rep into the boundaries of which the thou the procession filed upon completing the route marke: outforthem. The conduct of Lieutenants B. W. Hunter and O. H. Berryman deserve, however, to be more particu- larly noticed. The Truxton struck on the bar near Tuxpan on the evening of the 1ith August, and Lieut. Berryman was at once despatched in an open boat, by commander der, for assistance. He succeeded in reaching the ron on the 19th, and reported to Com. After an unsuccessful attempt to board the ‘Truxton, Lieut Hunter anchored astern of the brig. Onthe morning of the 17th the brig hoisted a flag of truce, lowered outthe dingey, with a sail bat- tened over her, and cast her adrift The current carried her throogh the breakers, and Lieutenant Hunter took ssession of her She contained some articles of pro- vinons, and a letter to him from commander Carpender, im the following words : * Lhave resolved to surrender the brig, end you are at liberty to use your discretion about goi: .
