Puitspetemia, Sept 1, 1646. The whige made the following nominations last even- ing for city and county officers :—For sheriff, Thomas McGrath, Northern Liberties; register of wills, E.G Kromer, city; county commissioner, Jacob Spicer, Spring Garden; auditor, John B. Mark, city. The firemen held a meeting last evening to take mea- | sures for the disposition of the body of Mr. Hewlett, when found. Delegates from seventeen companies were present, Resolutions were adopted, after which they adjourned to meet again to-morrow evening. The body of a young female was found drowned yes- terday in the Wissahicon creek. She lived about a mile from the place where she was found, and it is presumed had committed suicide the previous evening. The Ariel beat her competitor, the Marion, yesterday afternoon, coming in 234 minutes ahead. The owners are making up another purse to belong to the successful competitor in another race. In the previous race be- tween these boats the Marion took the purse. The sail- boat Dolly won her match easy, as the West Wind had not reached the buoy at Chester when the flood tide met her and forced her to give in, as the wind was extreme- ly light. ‘The paper mill of Joseph McDowell, at Manayunk, was consumed by fire at an early hour this morning — ‘The upper part was occupied ax a woollen mill. The whole builling was entirely destroyed, and a neighbor. ing manufactory was for some time in considerable dan- ger, but it was preserved with little damage. The body of Mr. Hewlett, the member of the Gulick Guards of your city, who was drowneda few days ago, was found this morning on the Jersey shore, two mil below Gloucester Point. Clerical Court of the First Presbyte: thwark, for the trial of the charges against Mr. Barn- castle, was in session last evening until alate hour. The first citation to appear was served upon Mr. Barncastle in person, but not appearing at the time fixed, a second citation was left with the wife of the accused, but he s not to be found, and she professed to be unaware of his whereabouts, The accused being absent, an advocate was appointed to defend his cause, and one took charge of the prosecution. All the evidence which could be brought, both for and against the defendant, was heard, and puton the record of the trial Among the most i portant evidence, was that given in by a servant girl liv- ing in the neighVorhood. She was standing at the door of Mr. Dunlap’s resideuce, about half-past ten o'clock in the evening, ry is said to have occurred, and saw M va the stroet {rom his store. She ntil 11 o'clock, with the ex- ception of a few miautes, when she crossed the street to buy some cakes ata shop opposite, but did not see Mr. Barncastle return to his store. It will be remembered that Mr. B stated that he had waited at the store until 11 o'clock for the coming of the man who had previously | purchased a pair of boots, and that about that hour the purchaser entered with two other men, when the outrage | und robbery was committed. ‘The decision of the court is not yet known, but as the defendant did not appear, the only recourse left for the tribunal is to find him guilty of contumacy.
