Notwithstanding the favorable advices from Mexico, andthe probable speedy settlement of our difficulties with that government, there was a decline in the stock market. Six of the board are exten- sively engaged in the dry goods trade, and the character ofthe bo:rd throughout is such as to give the public great confidence in the institution over which they pre. side. The vicissitudes this bank h: the immense losses it has experienced in its capitel, and in ite other assets—the repid depreciation in the value of its property—and the immense amount of its liabilities, which have in neafly every instance been paid in full, guarantee a more favorable, result in the liquidation of its remaining liabilities, and a more favorable resumption o business than its most sanguine friends have anticipatedf Commencing business with an ava’ hundred thousand dollars, aad assets varying in value from three to five millions of dollars, it does so under auspices the most flattering. revlize on the remaining assets, when the bank tive operation, than when it was in the hands of trustees The debtors of a bank, as well as those of an individual do not make that effort to pay up, when that bank or that individual, is in a state of suspension, as when their creditors are engage Baok will have much greater faci of its assets and for thy settlement of claims now, than it has evempossessed ; and we have no doubt the direc” tors will realize a much larger amount from their assets’ thn the trustees would under the most favorable circum, In making this assertion, we do not wish to be Und+rstood as detracting an iota from the credit due the fal management of the affairs of the company, as we think they aw entitled to the thanks of the stockholders ; but the po: directors occupies, gives them much greater facilities for realizing on the assets of tho bank, than the trustees passed through— ible capital of two It will be much e1 in active busine: ies for the collection trustees for thei ‘Pie originel-capital of the Girard Bank was five mil- ‘Tions of doliars, composed of one hundred thonsand shares ot fitty dollars each. We have more Confidence in banking institutions properly revived, those which have saved a moderate capital from the wreck of a large one, and resumed business upon it; than We have in hundreds of the new concerns which have been chartered within the past three year: knows, out of the banks, whether they have in fact any capital or not, the chances being that they have net ono- half, or perhaps one-quarter, of the capital represented. Baurimore, Sept. Ist, 1846. Col. Davis was nominated last night by the de- mocracy for re-election to the Mayoralty, At Alexandria, the retrocession vote at 3 o'clock was 504 in favor and 174 against. The Western mail contains no intelligenee of importance, Our merchants are waiting for the news by the steamer, and there is consequently a pause in the flour and grain markets. The mobites sent word to Nauvoo that they would burn the city and the temple on the 25th ult. About 200 men were under arms. Bloodshed was expected. The mo threatened to clear the Mormons out of the city. SS BY THE MAILS. Wasuineron, August 31, 1846. Camp Mecting—Doings on the Way—Money, a Golden and, Silvery Stream—The Vincennes—The Movements of the Administration—The War— Gen. La Vega, §c. As trifling as it may appear, the camp meeting, a mile-or two from the heart of the city, engrosses as much of the public attention as any thing else, at present. Yesterday, every cart, handbarrow, wagon, and public and private hack, were in re- quisition ; and even the poor dray horses, which had been worked almost to death during the pre- ceding six days, were ridden by their cruel owners to the scene of excitement. Notwithstand- ing there were upwards of five thousand people on the ground—from white to black, including all the intermediate shades of complexion, and as many degrees .of morals—good order was maintained ; that is, there was no fighting. The negroes had a meeting to themselves; in their company there was not even one white face asa bright relief to the ebon mass. They sung, they shouted, they prayed. The better to enable them to leap and jump in their feats of fanaticism, or folly, they tied their handkerchiefs around their waists. No unhallowed pale foot was allowed within the enclosure. Hundreds of impious wit- nesses looked on at adistance, and, as if they were in an enclosed theatre, anxiously awaited the changes of scene. We love religion, and en- joy its beneficent influence ; but such a mockery is contrary to the teachings of the world’s Re- deemer. Several disturbances took place on the road leading to the camp. A drunken driver was struck with a stone, after being knocked from his box. He had effended by running his horses against a small carriage which contained two ladies, and endangering their lives. Their pro- tector inflicted the punishment. Strong dunks were obtained not far off, without difficulty ; and to this, in part, may be attributed the disreputable proceedings. As soon as this camp n ting is over, another will commence eight miles from the city. The Rev. Henry Slicer, well known everywhere as the most zealous preacher in the Methodist con- nection, is among the many ministers who will conduct the ceremonies. The ery of “hard times,” for the first time in the history of our government, was heard to-day in all the Departments. Instead of givin: checks, that the clerks might go to the banks ani get their money, as al secrets “hg and silver were displayed in profusion. One of the pay agentscarried gold in his hat and silver in handkerchief. Men were going about clinking their cash, crying out one to another, in great glee, “ Sub-Treasnry!” “Sub-Treasury!” lt would have done Mr. Benton’s heart good to see the golden, silvery stream. The better days have come! Some of the clerks sell the constitutional currency for the trash of distant banks floating in our city, and pay their debts with what Senator Speight calls * rags and lampblack.” Mr. Walker ought to inhibit such an “exchange of funds ;” and we shall anxiously await a circular from the Department in accordance with this suggestion the sloop of war Vincennes, Captain Pauld- ing, attached to the East India squadron, has been ordered home. She has not been abroad more than, if quite, a year; and six or seven months must elapse before we will have the plea- sare of annou ber arrival. The report bas Mimaaizanlatea, that.no further steps are to be taken by the Administration, of a belligerent character, with regard to Mexico, until the result of the revolution shall be known. This is a mistake. On inquiry atthe War De- partment, where information can sometimes be obtained, Llearn that the midst active measures for prosecuting the war are in progress. Major General Scou is as busy as Adjutant General Jones. The orter of Secretary Marcy is Go abead!” and all the clerks, as if acting under the influence of a warlike spirit, patriotically obey the command. Two companies of riflemen from Fort McHe: and a battalion from Fort Colum- bus, are fort':with to be sent to the field of opera- tions. Provision has been made for their va oy at ance. The last day of August has arrived, and from present- : indications, | think that the excessive heat of summer will continue through the first fall month. Yesterday ‘was a most oppressive day, and to-day will not be less 20. The Major-General of tho militia of Maryland, finding that he had at his command but six hundred muskets to arm a force of twelve hundred men, has wisely con- cluded to postpone indefinitely the muster and drill of his vast legion. This will spoil the sport anticipated by many of our young bloods, who were preparing for grand display of fantastics. There are now three line# oftravel between this city and Philadelphie, the railroad line, the Erriceon steam- ers, and the new barge line. The two last mentioned lines run for $1 each, and the cars for $3 per head. The barge line has been put on in opposition to the Errie- son, and having superior accommodations to the latter, carries the larger portion of the Passengers: It appears that the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal Company, which, by the way, is one of the most singularly managed pablic highways in the counisy felted the boat opposition with the Erricson and throws every ob- stacle in the way of the barge company, for of detaining it on the route, and allowing the other com- pany to beat them through as much as possible.
