Barrimore, Aug. 17, 1846. Another Storm— Pleasures of the Camp Grownd— Theatricals—Large Dividend—Fatlures, $c. We hive had this morning another of those tremendous storms of rain for which our city has became so famous of late. It came down in tore rents for about an hour, forming one sheet of wa- ter, s'retched from house to house, on some of our main streets. A number of cellars have been * filled again, for the third time in three weeks, and considerable damage has doubtless been done. The rain still continues, and there must be a delightful time on the various camp grounds in the vicinity of the city, which commenced operations on Friday. There is to be found deli- cate females and infant children, exposed to the pelting of the storm, with the damp ground to lie upon, and a tent over head, through which the water must have been streaming for the last two hours. Last night our blooded young men came in from the camp grounds, with their horses una- ble to move outot a walk, and some of their dri- vers unable to handle a whip. God never in- tended that religion should be thus propagated by folly and crime The Holliday street theatre, under its new owner, James Wagner, Esq , is now undergoin; a thorough rerairing and remodeling for the fu’ season. The stage is to be enlarged, and a va- riety of improvements effected for the azcommo- dation of both the audience and the performers. Mr. Marshall of the Walnut street theatre, Phila- delphia, is still the lessee, and intends opening it early in the fall with a brilliant company. The museum is about suspending its theatriea performances, for the purpose of enlarging and improving the saloon. Mr. Barnum has also en- gaved a fine company for the fall carnpaign. The Frontstree: theatre is to be opened m a few days by Mr Burton, with a fine stock company, among whom I observe the names of Mr. aud Mrs. allack, and Mr. Burke, with the manager himself, who is hard to beat. Should the weath- er become alittle cooler, they will doub:less have a profitable season. . The Baltimore Fire Insurance Company has declared a dividend of five per cent. for the last six months. 5 We have had a number of heavy failures in this city within the last two weeks, one of w was for the sum of $100,000, and the individual, one of our most prosperous merchants. He endorsed | to the amount of $100 000, for some friends, which is the cause of his failure. Putvapevrnta, Aug. 18, 1846. We have glorious weather to-day; a strong northerly breeze prevails, which has revived the flagging spirits of our cits, and they seem entirely satisfied with the cecent transactions of that im- | portant personage, the clerk of the weather. The plenteons rain of yesterday afternoon was very acceptable in both town and country. | Late last evening the coroner was called to hold an inquest on the body of a respectably | dressed white man, aged about twenty-two, whuch did not appear to have beenin the water more than a couple of hours. It was found below the city, and the deceased is supposed to have | been drowned during the storm. His body has no? yet been identified. tte The Democratic City and County Conference completed the following appointinents yesterday, For sheriff. Wm. Deal, of Bristol township; Re- | gister of Wills, Alexander Brown, of Northern | Liberties; County Commissioner, Wm. Vanoster, | of the city; Auditor, Allan Rutherford, also of the city. The Soraney Convention of the same party met yesterday alternoon, and received nomina- tion for State Senator and the Assembly tick: The excess of delegates returned from the several | wards led to a strong debate, whch was only | concluded by a reference toa committee to report | at the next meeting on Monday next. | Seg The whig conference will meet for organization on Moopey evening next The native county co vention met and organized yesterday. Tke Preparations for the Commencement at Yale College—The Anticipated Resignation of the Pre- For some time past, the quiet of our city has been | disturbed by the daily arrival of hundreds upon ' hundreds of men, women and children of all sorts and sizes. This is accounted for by the fact that the Commencement of the time-honored Yale comes off on Thursday next, August 20. Among the above mentio:ed folks, are many anxious mo- thers, tender sisters, and a host of affectionate cousins, who have been drawn hither by the praiseworthy desire to witness the literary efforts of ason, brother, or cousin, on the Commence- ment stage. | Judging from the character of the speakers, we | predict that the exercises of this annual literary | feast will be unusually interesting The exami- | nation of candidates for admission into College has been going on to-day, and will be continued to- | morrow. A large class is expected next year. On Wednesday, in the forenoon, the meeting of the Alumni is held; in the afternoon the The- } ological Students hold forth. In the evening, a poum by the Rev.
