[ESE and that measures would be taken to have the, proposition made to the, yoveramens at Mxibo with the least possible delay,” Nobert Peet humself admitted tet instrucvous had been gent to Mr. Pakenham. No wonder that Great Britain is soliciteus to end a war, which her policy with regard to the annexation of Texas provoked, for the renege tbat “ber anter- ests cannot Jail to suffer most deeply from such a state of things.” What those interests are—among them the silver of the mines—are well known to the world. Mr. Pakenham was for a long time Mister to Mexieo, and is as familiar with Mex- ico as wih the affairs of his own household ; and, therefore, it was proper that he should have some agency in an effort to bring about a state of peace. No “meaiation” has b en accepted by our go- vernmen'; but there is, I have reason to know, a perfect understanding between the administration and Her Majesty’s minister. No ‘ overture” was made by Mexico ; but the President was well assured, by some one, before the 8th instant, that “our difficuities with the Mexican Republic ” might be adjusted, by paying “a fair equivalent fer any concessions which muy be made by Mex- ico!” Mr. Stidell and Mr, Pickens came to the eity a few days only befvre the message was sent 10 Congress. It will be remembered that, daring the discus- sion of the war bill, Mr. Crittenden suggested the policy which the President exhibited in the mes- sage—the olive in one hand and the sword in the other. Mr. Winthrop proposed an amend- ment to an appropriation bill, to send out a min- ister; Mr. Webster subsequently advanced some- thing ilar. but all duis was then laughed at! However, good can sometimes “ come out of Nuzareth.”’ Butt mention all these things as a part of the history of the times. Little can be said of the ac- | tivity of our Navy, More than a month ago, the country expected that every important port in Califernia was in possession of our fleet, notwith- standing it was thought at that ume, Lord Sey- mour, the British adiniral, would interpose every possible obstacle to the operations of Commodore Sleat. From certain indications in the South we New Orleans Picayune said, ** we should be less surprised to hear ol a treaty of peace with Mexi- co ihan we were, atew days since, at the an- | nouncement that the Oregon controversy was put fo rest.” On the same day this was published in the Union in this city. Mr, Hannegan called up a resolution, requesting the President to commu- nicate to the Senate the orders, if any such had been transmitted to General Taylor since the bat- tles of the 8th and 9th of May, directing him to advance on Mexico, or otherwise ¢ ntrotling his movements. This resolution was offered under the influence of the imputations which appeared in the public prints, that since the period of tae | battles upon the Rio Grande, Generai Laylor had been wholly inactive, although he continued to have under his command a large body of troops, occasioning a large expense to the government, While a time peculiarly favorable for a campaign was allowed to go by. But the Senate refused to adopt it, and no reasons were assigned for so dong. _ There has been some dilatoriness, or a kind of implied armistice, in all the transactions connect- ed with our army and navy, cver since the battles of the 8th and 9th of May. But a fresh determmation now animates the administration, Since the adjournment of Con- gress instructions have been sent to Gen. Tayli and given to Com. Shubrick (who will short! Keve Com. Stout) to go ahead vigorously and ef: | , S¥¢oxp Boa feetively. Every thing Mexican within spying distance, except the yellow fever, is to be captur- ed. The ports in California are to be se.zed anid occupied by our squadron and our troops —blovys are to be struck at the Mexican strongholds, and their troops, if they willonce more remain an, tue field to measure Weapous with us. Sante. Fe Coahuila and Monterey are to be taken, und up: pr Mexico occupied by our arms. Owe southern vundary must extend from the mouth of the Rio del Norte to the southern bounds of California on the Pacific; and as it was once said by a Boston | ankee, “a vast territory would thus b aequir- ed, competent to maintain hundreds of muilhons, and to furnish all the productions both of th tempera’e and \usrid zoues, abounding in mine and with a free population of near- more than enough to balance the slave population of Texas.” The Union of yesterday says that “the crown | grant to the Hudson’s Bay Company was made One years, it expires in 1859, and with it ail the benefit of the navigation of the company, which | | Survey or Lake Cuamptar } that it is in ion between the United States | ‘of this interesting lake, as an a 1S Segured to, thes by the late conv and Great Britain.” This is Mr. Buchanan’s opinion. The London Tims of the Mth of July says, “the navigauen of the Columbia is secure to the Hudson’s Bay Company in perpetuity; ard the existence of that company Under the charter of Charles” is itself unliuuted. This 1s Sir Ro- bert Peel’s opinion. Which and who is ngh,t? 1 have been creditably informed that the Pyesi- dent had mae out, ready to be sent in, tine ap- poinunents for Oregon, in anticipation of ihe pas- saze of the bil creating a territorial govesrnment. and those trading with them, Ithas not yet been ascertained who wure to be | the incumbents. Feurx. New Orreans, August 6, 1846. News from the Army—Health of the City, &c-. There is no great news from the seat of war, although vessels are arriving every day. The Alabaina arrived yesterday, but the only news she brought was, that the army was on the move, health good, and that the Matamoras Reveille had ceased to beat. Indian depredations are spoken of, and it is stated that McCollock’s rangers had been despatched to protect the Mexicans against their old enemies, the Cumanches. Rather an | odd proceeding that! The city here is remarkable, and unusually healthy. No yellow fever has as yet made its ap- pearance and it may keep off, but it is thought we shall have a small sprinkling of it anon. In the worst years it generally has commenced late in August according to the tables, in. which 1 am pretty well “ posted up,” being one that have | never before * frizzled southern sun, There is no local news of any interest stir- iiig. The Louisiana volunteers are coming back every day. “True ’tis true, but pity ts that ’tis true.” “Business is dull, and there is no- thing in the way of amusement stirring, which is not particularly pleasant. The report that th® Empress Josephine Clifton had married Place, the “‘agent” of one of the theatres here, has caused great chaffing among theatrical people, and the admirers of the lady. in the burning rays of a Bartimore, August li, 1846. The Telegraph—Remains of Major Ringgold— | Camp Meeting Preparations, §c.—Tom Johnson in Limbo—Emigrants, §c. The sympathetic wire between Baltimore and New York is still prostrate, from the effects of contest with the storm king. When it will be re- paired no one seems able to foretel. Had the line from Philadelphia to New York have been constructed on the line of the railroad four of the last five days might have been saved. The fact is, these telegraph lines do not seem to have been either constructed or managed according to the Progressive spirit of the age. The “penny wise” system seems to have been pretty general- ly adopted. Capt. Kane, of the Eagle Artillerists, has re- ceived a letter from Major McRea, of the United States Army, informing him that it has been deemed advisable not to remove the remains of Major Ringgold until the weather becomes cold- er, which in that climate does not occur until the last of September, so that in al probability the funeral will not take place until about the Ist of December. This uecision is undoubtedly a wise one, and it will give time to those companies from the neighboring States and the counties of Maryland, to fully prepare for their contemplated excursion to this city on the occasion. It will, undoubtedly, be one ‘of the greatest military pa- rades ever witnessed in this country. No less than seven steamboats, eeveral trains of | this State, cars, and all the carriages, barouches, gigs, wa- gons and furniture carriages in the city are en- gaged for t»-morrow and Sunday to carry our pious population to the camp grounds, which are in oe Per wens in various directions. The demand for whisky, and liquors of all kinds, tor the taverns along the roads, has cansed quite a. revival of trate among our distillers and liquor dealers Carriage makers are employing ext hands todo the repairing of vehicles consequent on these turn-outs ; and the horse dociors are studying the various cures for sprained, lame, and wind-broken horses. and the churches in the city are not capable of contaning these numerous worshippers, let them go it while they are young, and the devil take the consequences. Tom J -hnson, the comedian, who has recently been performing in this city, lett a few days since for the purpose of filling an engagement at the Bowery; but Ilearn that as he passed throu: h Philadelphia he was seized on the charge of ‘oe serting his wife and children ; and not being able to give bail for their maintenance, was carried to prison, where it is sai er, as the horses have got no souls, he is still confined. Tom ? @ broth ofa boy, and rumor has it that he is Fa ‘under a matrimonial engagement to 2 lady of thi city. tive bark’ Paoli, Capt. Welch, from London, has arrived here with one hundred and iwenty- five passengers, some of whom are from Prussia, Puitaveceua, Aug. 1, 1846. We have among the passengers for New York this evening, in the train from Washington, the venerable Ex-President Adams and family, Ex- President Tyler, and Robert Tyler his son, anda large and respectable list all round. We shall have further to remark upon this and other subjects to-morrow. We were brought off from the Federal city in the very midst of our lueubra- tions. Respectiully, Tue Docror. Pui.apeLruia, August 14, 1846. The Weather—Cricket Match, §c. We have the thermometer to-day at 94, and the heat of the sun is intense, though there isa fine breeze stirring from the South-West totemper its scorching, but one must get beyond the limits of brick and mortar to feel it. ‘The well-contested cricket match, between the St. George and Union clubs, at the grounds of the | [& latter, has just been concluded. The heat of the weather was a great hindrance to the players, but nevertheless the game was a well contested one, and is creditable to both parties. ‘The following is an accurate history of the game :— Union Crus. ist Innings.
