Sala- ries range from four thousand to fifteen hundred dollars. No person to be appointed to either of these Consulates, who is not a citizen of the United States, and a resident ment at the time he is nominated by the President; nor shall any Consul engage either directly or indirectly in commercial or mercantile pursuits, or be connected with ship brokers or ship agencies, under the penalty of bei recalled and fined in a sum not loss than two thousa! dollars. The Lynchburg Virginian of Monday oe ai un | derstand that the protracted rains have nearly ruined the crop on James River. We understand the May wheat has commenced sprouting. A few more days rain, and the crop will be entirely destroyed. The last Fincastle Valley Whig says :—We continue to have in this section, very damp and disagreeable . If we remember correctly, we believe we have not had as much as two days clear weather at one time, for the last six weeks. Our farmers are justly alarmed ‘on account of the effect which this weather must of ne- cessity have upon heat crop. Our own opinion that unless there is a very sudden change in the weather there will be little or no wheat raised the present season in the county of Botetourt. . Foreign Markets. Canacas.—We have received files from Caracas to the 23d May. The annexed tables, giving a comparati view of the trade of Guaira (the port of Caracas), ex- hibit a rapid increase with England and France, whi that of the United States rests in statu quo. The im- ports from England in 1845, show an increase of 693 per cent over those of 1844; from France, 11934 per cent ; from the States, but 19% per cent. The exports to the United States have fallen off over 100 per cent, while to England and France they have incre: , Tespectively, 2945 per cent and 474 per cent. Yet the number of yessels and amount of tonnage arriving to and parting from Guaira, under the United States flag, bears a propor tion of over 2 to 1 to the vessels and tonnage of the French and English combined.
