As to the cliarge of the absence ofall protection, Pe is ny, the concern of the State government f Texas. it be true, that it has called into Sane all the men capable of bearing arms, and left none bute old men, wow and children, whose fault is it? Are the grantees to be made responsible for an act in which they Were not con- sulted, and which it was not in their power to prevent? I will now explain t to you the real object of the publication in ques’ It is to create in Ameri- 0a Gertain sinister news that may operate on par- ticular parts of Europe, to prevent the large emi- ration which is now in preparation for Texas.— 3 it not to sacrifice to the basest passions the in- terests of a country which stands in need of popu- lation, thus to assail the honor of respectable men who have faithfully employed their capitals in an enterprise as moral as it is useful to the agricultu- ral industry ! . Those who are envious and jealous of the ima- | ginary millions which the ¢ ve be gaining, would be v. uch surprised if thes grantees should offer # ir profits, upon a guarantee of re-imbursement of their expenses, and of that protection to the colonists whic! those rantees would extend to them. They would ly accept the offer. are supposed PuttapeLrnia, June 15, 1846, About 9 o'clock this morning, an announcement through the telegraph from the Herald office, proclaimed the arrival of the steamer Great Western at your port. | The news was not given to the public, however, until half-past two o’cloek, when the city was flooded with extras from four different offices. There has not heen sufficient time yet to judge with certainty of its effect upon tne markets, but stocks have continued firm, though the sales were not as heavy as on Saturday. We have close and sultry weather to-day, which, though not very agreeable, ia preferable to the north: east storm of rain which comtinued throughout the last week. The Oregon Negotiations—Gen. Scott's Correspondence —Trial of “ Dr. Bragdon” for Bigamy—Smashing of Windows, and Breaking of Legs by Frightened Horses | —Memoirs of Maria Bickford—A Ducking in the Frog | Pond, $c. The intelligence from Washington respecting the ne- gotiation on the Oregon question, has given much satis- faction to business men, and the effect on the stock mar- ket has been highly favorable. We have all been laughing over the amusing corres- pondence of Gen. Scott; and it must be a source of con- ratulation to his friends, that he is notto be subjected to e murderous fire of the Mexicans in front, while his | rear is exposed to the heavy guns at Washington. A | very fine print of the General is exhibited in the win- dows iy Washington street, which represents him stand- ing by the side of a noble war horse, apparently very sure footed and well provided with hoofs, from whice, I infer the animal has never invaded Mexico, though he ag te be able to do so by the first of October. ‘The trial of the famous “ Dr. Bragdon.” for indulging | too often in hymenial recreations, whereby he had accu- mulated three or four wives, came on in the Municipal Court, yesterday, and was concluded this forenoon, by a verdict of gullty. He managed his own case, but made | rather bad work of it. On Thursday, a pair of horses attached to a carria; fe rai down West street across Washington, smashing big windows of Dr Brown’s apothecary shop, and Shen they reached Bedford Place, they turned furiously on to the side walk and knocked down a young man named Luke Munsell, piano forte maker, and so badly smashed one of his ankles, that it became necessary to amputate his leg about half way up tothe knee. Father Heinrich’s concert comes off this evening, and appearances indicate a successful and interesting enter- tainment. The million, or as one of the papers exprosses it, y'the underten thousand,” have beon making a great tush for apampblet which has boen issued » the week, containing the memoirs and letters of the late Maria A. All our exchanges in Michigan speak in the most flat- tering terms of the prospect of the wheat crop. Private reports contri the account. Not a county seems to be excepted if nothing unfavorable occurs the present month, the harvest will be more abundant than ever be- fore in Michigan. The quantity of land in wheat is of course much greater also. The Macon (Ga) Messenger of the 11th inst. says :— The hearts of our farmers, as well as everp one else, have been much cheered by abundant rains within a few days past. Previous to this, a drought had began to pre- vail to a considerable extent, and corn and some other crops, were in danger of injury. Here the rain fell mo- derately for about twenty-four hours, and several heavy showers have fallen since, and it is considered nearly sufficient to insure a good crop of all the early planted corn. The rain has been very general, having fallen copiously from the seaboard to this place, and our river shows good evidence of heavy rains above.
