The stock market opened heavy this morning, but the announcement that the Great Western was be- | low stiffened prices, and upon the receipt of the news an | advance on most of the fancies was realized. The ac- counts from the other side are considered highly favor | able, and have so far had a favorable effect upon the | market. At the first board, Reading Railroad Bonds went up } per cent; Pennsylvania 6’s, }; Vicksburg, } ; Morris Ca- | nal, }; Reading, }; Harlem, 1; North American Trust, Canton, Norwich and Worcester, Long Island and Far- | mers’ Loan, closed firm at Saturdays prices. At the second board, Reading advanced } per cent. _ Norwich and Worcester, 1 ; Long Island, }; Harlem, 1}; | Stonington, j. The transactions were very large at both | boards, and the tendency of prices at the close was up- ‘wards. The advices by the Great Western are eleven days la- | ter than those received by the Hibernia, and in a com | mercial point of view they are highly important. The passage of the Corn Bill in the House of Lords to a third | reading by a large majority, had settled its fate. It had jn fact become a law, so sure was its final passage. This {s favorable news for our agricultural classes, although | we do not anticipate any immediate effect upon prices here for our egricultural products, or any immediate in- | crease in the demand for export. There had been a | slight decline in cotton the week previous to the depar- ture of the steamer, which continued up to the time of her sailing, the accounts from this side in relation to the commencement of hostilities with Mexico, not having hhad time to do away with the decline, although prices stiffened, and the market became firm. ‘The London Money Market was comparatively easy. Consels had advanced, ané@ the evidences of a decided ‘and permanent improvement in the market, were very | encouraging. The railway mania was steadily subsi- ding, and all fears of any serious difficulty growing out of that movement, had been abandoned. The news on the whole is good, much better than anticipated, and this fact has had a very favorable effect upon this market ge- | nerally. There has been a fair demand for sterling exchenge, and the closing rates were 8} a 8} per cent premium.— ‘We quote on Paris 5f. 35 a Sf. 32}; Amsterdam 39 a 39}; Hamburg 35 a 354; Bremen 77} a 78. ‘We annex the monthly statement of the banks of South Carolina, for the purpose ef comparing the aggregate | movements for several periods.
