Many honest and well | meaning citizens have been misled by their false | | boasting, and that part of the public generally who trust to the Chamber of Commerce for information, | have been egregiously and wickedly deceived by these self-appointed law-makers, who have neitheir sagacity or stability of character to regulate their own paltry affairs, but who arrogate to themselves the right to instruct and command the whole gov- ernment of the country, and who have always scout- ed the commercial and financial measures of a de- mocratic Congress, from the day when, on the Mer- chants’ Exchange, in Wall street, they swore eternal hatred to President Jackson, and gave themselves the U.S. Bank. Who are these men, that they should assume to dictate terms to the representatives of the people? Have they more honesty, more wis- dom, than our mechanics? Does an office in Wall street give these would-be Solons any special pre- rogative? S elope, 2 2'pilot boat: 1 steam boat. 220 Such is the commentary on the present system. Our neighbors, of New Jersey, are groasly deceived, it they suppose that their State derives any benefit from the present law. One-half of the Jersey pilots, so called, are Connecticut men. All get licenses in New Jersey, ai and the cash they pay for them goes to the commissioners; but three-fourthe of the whole number of ‘Jersey pilots” live in New York and Brooklyn, and pater all their earnings in this State. ‘Upon thia point, we have collected a list of residences, and the fact is indisputable. Of what use, then, is this ee to New Jersey, when the State derives neither honor not emolument. The people are not benefitted ; whilst, by countenancing the system, they are doing an injustice to their neighbors. To show the Rios ignorance of the Chamber, we have to state, that some of their wise acres, who Re retend to all knowledge of the bay and harbor of lew York, and who are most rabid, in relation to the claim of the New York pilots, have set all their wire-pullers at work, to obtain the control of an eprrorriatcs from ‘Con; ress, to build a Light louse on the South-West Spit. More consummate tolly—more blind ignorance—could not be co gated in any one profession, than that exhibite tnis stupid proposition. Any man who looks a a chart, will see that the S. W. Spit, lying, as it does, about North of Sandy Hook, could only be built on to the ruin of our principal ship channel, and of our magnificent harbor. Witha Light House on the Spit, the ship channel would be entirely impassable in{winter, from the ice which would then complete- ly choke it; ani, ina very short time, the empt ings of the rivers and bays would close the wh hole navigation with mud and sand. Congress will consult practical pilots, before committing such an irreparable injury as these blind men would per- petrate against the best interests of New York 1 hey have no consideration for the sufferings of tae shipsi which would be driven away from our port, to find shelter in Boston, Newport, Nortolk, orf Bermuda. What, to them, is it that our ship- smiths, sail-makers, ‘carpenters, &c, would lose their winter’s business?
