? compared with what it) was before the last ‘War, wo annex a tab le showing the importation of cot- toa in Great Britain from the United States, and ali other Puts of t he world, for several years prior to the last rupture in our pesceful relations, and for several years past. This table shows that an immense interest is'at stake now, compared with the period alluded to—an in- terest that must possess an influence with the govern- ‘Ments of both countries, of the most important charac- ter, for good or evil. Taroaravions oF Core NW INTO Gi Brasil. East, Ind. ~ meat Brirasy, 160,180 Wi Ind A ee. Total. 440,388 eazzeess S8S83e2= s: 8 At the close of the last war between this country a England, the importation of cotton into Great Britain from the United States, was about fourteen hundred and | filty thousand bales less than last year. The consump. tion of cotton in Great Britain in 1845, was about twelve _ hundred thousand bales greater than in 1814. This in- Fe Crease of consumption is immense, and every one can | readily conceive the very extensive interest that must | now be engaged in this business. All this, or a gr Part of it, will be, in the event of hostilities between the | two countries, sacrificed. It will be perceived that du- Ting the lest war, notwithstanding all the efforts made by | our government to prevent it, and the dangers attending | its transportation across the Atlantic, that cotton was | ‘imported into Great Britain from the United States, to an | “extent amounting to a very fair per cent of the con- | ‘sumption at thattime. In tke event of another war be- tween the two countries, cotton would go forwardtoa Certain extent, in spite of all the difficulties and dangers that would be experienced ; but it would be impossible toget hold of any quantity, Coming apywhere near the per cent of the consumption, obtained during | last war. - The cotton manufactures of Europe gen- erally, und of Great Britain in particular, would, there- for’, be ruined ; and the great number of operatives, ‘abo are in the most prosperous times literally ina starving condition, would be turned out, and deprived of | all employment but what they might obtain from the | government, in the army andnavy. It may be argued | ‘on the other side, that the cotton growers of this country would be ruined, as well as the manufacturers of Great Britain; but that does not follow as | & natural consequence, as our planters have other Tesources; they could, to a great extent, turn their attention and their plantations to the cul tivation of other agricultural products. It would, even under oxisting circumstances, be more for the in- terest of the Southern planters if they would appropri- ate more of their land to the cultivation of other staple articles than cotton. We already produce too much of the raw material; the production is several hundred | thousand bales ahead of the consumption, and it is like. ‘Ty to remain there unless some general combination is made among the planters to restrict it. Sometime since conventions were held in several sections of the Southern country, to devise ways and means to reduce the pro- duction of this steple, but they did not amount to much; there wasn unison of interests or sentiments, and the whole thiyg fell tothe ground. It is a very extraordi- | nary fact, that for many years past, the production and Constumption of this staple has increased throughout the j Word in about the same proportion; that is, the produc. tio‘ is just about the same per cent in advance of ths | C‘snsumption now, as it was many years ago, and has "poen for several years past. From this fact we draw the Anference that unless something is done to check the | Production or increase the consumption of this erticle, | | Prices must eventually fall below a remunerstive point. | Havin GEORGE W. ' HIGHLY INTERESTING FROM WASHINGTON. Speech of Mr. McDuffie, dec. de. THE OREGON QUESTION. The Oregon debate is dragging its slow length along, and will, probably, end its career, for the present, ina few days. News from England to the 19th ult., will be in Washington some time this week, and that to the 4th inst., in about ten days after. The speeches on the Oregon question, now mak- ing in the Senate, are of considerable importance. We annex that of Mr. McDuffie. Mr. Webster is to follow him; but his remarks will affect Oregon less than it will the Ashburton treaty. It ie expeeted that Benton will again speak, and follow Webster. It is said to be Benton’s inten- tion to make a regular speech on our title to Ore- gon, and completely demolish Allen, Cass, &¢c. dc. We are given to understand that neither of the Texas Senators will speak on this questien. Tt was understood, till recently, that Ashley was a 49 man; but he has since leaped over the Colum- bia, and is now on 54 40. Wasuinaton, April 4, 1846. Oregon—Fifty-four Forty Extingwished—Tremew dous Assault upon the Stronghold of the Spartans, by Senator McDuffie, of South Carolina. Fifty-four forty was, kut is no longer. It reoeiv- edthe finishing blow to-day. Mr. McDuffie has laid itout as cold as those frozen lakes of Uppe Oregon. You will see that we fairly anticipated his des- cription of the country. [tis an appalling picture; | and truly, if this be so—and we believe it most re- ligiously—the country of Oregon—that i {ake the “*whole”—appears 4 have yy lasted by the | God who made it. Never dae aweee up to | the work more coolly and deliberately than Sena- tor McDuffie to-day. But we refer you to the ample sketch of your reporters The forty-nines are now like the poleon descending the Alps, beari: fore them. Mr. Webster will set himself righ upon the Ash- burton treaty on Monday next. fe expect a great speech. Wasuineton, April 8, 1846. The Oregon Controversy—Interesting {and Curious Complexion of Affairs. The important debates in the Senate, for some days past, have engrossed the public attention. The unequivocal position of Col. Benton on the 49th de- gree, has astounded the men of the prairies and of the great lakes. They say if the country is not com- mitted at the present session, 54 40 will turn the ecale; and instruct the great Missouri leader to obey or resign. With the major proposition we entirely concur. The government must be committed, if | the question be not settled at the present session upon the basis of 49, or the alternative will resolve | itself upon the “whole or none.” There will be— ‘No half-way house of diplomatic rest.” | The question thus far,has worked a most anomelous | harmonizing of conflicting elements. Upon the \« whole or none” we have the amicable fraternity and fraternal fellowship of Messrs. Adams, Allen and Giddings; while upon the 49th degree, we have the equally singular trinitarial company of Calhoun, Webster and Benton. It is a question which has ike extinguished party lines, sectional obligations and personal animosities. ‘We could have as soon anticipated the conjunction of Sirius and the moon, as of Adams and Allen upon a question of gover- mental policy, significant or insignificant—whether involving the claim of a fifty dollar pension, or the peace of the habitable globe. But Allen, ultra in all things, is still consistent ; and Adams, eccentric as | @ meteor, guided by no attraction, and scorning a regular orbit, finds himself in the orbit of radicalism, the satellite ot acomet, though more brilliant than the comet itself; neither the comet nor the satellite ting an’ possi le utility, but diffusing, like the of Milton disastrous twilight over half ations.” The c conjunction of Webster and Ben- iets as super- ost, In & ions of Na- th ton is another won Jer of the time: natural as the apparition of Ham! morning conversation with the Prince of Denmark. There is somethin absolutely ghostly about it.— bello,” # oring Webster—and “ peace is chimes in Col. Benton—*, Bella, , rida, bella,” shouts Allen, with the lungs of an earthquake speaking through he larynx of a volea- no; and “ war, horrid war,” echoes Mr. Adams, with his feet tremulous upon the verge of eternity, | and his head bald, like the pine upon the —— that has weathered the winds of a thou: ters. “War is inevitable,” cries Cass ; the * whole or none,” cries Hannegan ; “Let us have it all— you shall drain the dregs to the ge, a says Mr. Giddin > Roe to the South; “ onpainas? says ‘alhoun; “ Forty-nine,” says Colonel Benton ; and the sound is echoed back from the blafis of the Missouri to the rice-fields of Carolina! and from Bunker Ill to Talladega and the Wyth- lacoochee. The strong and strengthening voice of the Senate to the British Premier, the British Par- | liament, and the British Queen, is, we offer you | peace upon 49—war if you decline it, or decline to t.
