The motion of Mr. Allen yesterday to go into Ex- ecutive session, after the expiration of the morning hour, on Monday next, has for ite object the consi- deration of a treaty of commerce between Belgium and this out, Mr. Serruys, late charge d’affairs, goes home on the Ist proximo, and is anxious to take it with him. . Leopold de Meyer, the prince of pianists, gave hie firat concert here, last evening. The ence was very full and fashonab!/o, consisting of the bom ton of Washington. His execution was the moat rapid and extraordinary Ihave ever before witnessed, From the manner in which he at times played, it appeared that his whole soul was engaged in a flerce contest with the keys of the instruinent, for the purpose of bringing out the notes in sweet and distinet tones. ‘The pieces performed, were rather ft more of the nature of “ voluntarles” than parts of opera pieces, so overrun were they with symphonies, apogatures and running passages, all mixed up to- gether, in order to display his powers of execution. He is one of the greatest performers on the piano forte "that has ever been in the United States. He will give another concert te-morrow night, and one in Richmoud, Va.,on on Tuesday night next. Mr. Wood, the vocalist, accompaaies him. As I am speaking, or rather writing, of the fine arts, 1 may | os well notice our friend Plumbe’s Daguerrian gal- lery, on Pennsylvania Avenue. I dropt in there yesterday to look at his likenesses of all our great men, which ornament the walls, anda finer or better collection of pictures are not to be seen in this keetion of country. There 1s the human face divine in every form and size in which na- ture originally made it, seen in all its linea- ments and features so true, that the beholder wonders whether to admire most the secret and silent agent that operates the likeness, or the ingenuity and skill of those who manage the operation while it is go- ing on. Ineither case, the mind is amply satisfied by an hours {sehaos around Pluinbe’s gallery, not forgetting, however, to have the outer casing cast upon the surface of a silver plate. Nothing can be better fortamily keepsakes than those handsome | aad correct miniatures; and 80 one who sets any | value upon the memory of a dear friend, should not fail to get one at Mr. Plumbe’s. Mr. McCalla, the 2ad Auditor, it is said, will be rejected by the Senate, notwithstanding that he is | “a religious, conscientious and good member of our church,” as the President sometimes says to appli- | cants for office, who are fortunate enough to have clerical recommendations. Yet, those peculiar qua- hfieations are not generally the best to bring be! the Senate and the other whatever they maybe atthe White House. Mr. Polk’s theological organ, notwithstanding hie pulpit attack on John Tyler, for allowing cotillon parties to take place in his mansion, availed him nothing when before the House of Representatives as a can- didate for chaplain. It is, however, different where the Kgs is in the gift of the President himself. Then to be “a religious, conscientious, and good member of our church,” is sufficient to ie 8 fat office, or to obtain promotion from a lower to a higher one. I shall give a single instance as anexampie. A clerk in th> second auditor’s of- fice, named Josiah F. Polk, at a salary of $1000 per annum, before Mr. James K. Wolk came into office, Was promoted soon after to the chief clerkship in that bureau, at a salary of $1600. This was not for his superior qualifications as a clerk, for there were others in the same bureau much abler than he, nor ‘was it because of his democracy, because he was a whig in 1840. [t is thought it cannot be on account of any relationship between him and the President, as it consists only in being of the same name. Well, what has been the cause of it? I have quoted above the words ot the President to applicants having cle- rical reoommendations, and as Mr. Josiah F. Polk is the editor ot a religious monthly periodical, in which the ** Pope” and the “‘Papists” come regular- ly under his lash, it is fair to infer that this official editor's labors in this peculiar way, have been the cause of his promotion from $1000 to $1600 a year. Me. McCalla is so strict with his clerks, during of- fice hours, that he will notallow them to read the Newspapers of the day; yet I have been credibly informed, that hie chiet clerk has tull liberty to cir- culate his “ Investigator” among the departments, and to poke (Polk) itunder the nose of every clerk there,no matter wnat his religious belief may be ; this would not be of any consequence, if every one were of the orthodox Presbyterian form of faith, but. the people of the United States belong to a hundred different forms, and a majority of them to none at all, those testa, either in the way of exclusiou from or recommendation to, office, ought not, and shall | not be countenanced, if Ican prevent them. Wasurneton, March 18, 1846. Commodore William M. Crane, Chief of the Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography, cut his throat, from ear to ear, about one o'clock, in his office, at the Navy Department.- The particulars of this melancholy affair, are as follows: the time above named, Commodore Warrington | order the eng: sent one of his clerks down to Commodore Crane’s | fan eeeetient office, to say that he wanted to speak with him? | as may bo necessary ; which stock the Prec On the clerk reaching the office, he found the door | United States is hereby authorized to purchuse, fastened, and the Commodore inside—and, sup posing he was privately engaged, returned and made hia report to Coimmodore Warrington. About two o'clock, he went again on the same errand, but still found the door fast; and, believing he was yet in | fy private conversation with some one, merely put his | na) eye to the key-hoie, and saw his coat thrown across the back of a chair. On informing Commodore | passage, and also moved the previous question, which Warrington of this, the letter remarked that it was | of no consequence, as he could see him at another time. All hands soon after left the department, except one clerk and the messengers that usually remain until afier 4 o’clock, when those persons, | fearing that something was wrong in the Commo- dore’s room, sent for Commodore Warrington, who had left the department for his residence. When he came—after knocking at the door, and receiving | in no answer—he gave orders to break it open, which was immediately done; and, on entering his room, they ebserved the old gentleman in a corner, on his knees, his head resting against the wali, and his | throat cut from ear to ear, severing all the arteries | and-windpipe. Beneath him was a large pool of blood, having bled profusely, as a matter of course. | Me left a letter for Commodore Warrington, the contents of which have not as yet transpired—but they may be easily inferred, from the tact that he was observed, for some days back, to be laboring under an aberration of mind. He was about sixty- eight years old, and has leftan affectionate wife, and a very large connexion of highly respectable friends aad relations, to mourn his untimely end. The sons ot St. Patrick had a magnificent blow- out last night at Carusi’s saloon. ‘There were about fifty at dinner, amo whom | noticed the venerable Washington P. Custis, the presideat on the occasion; Mr. Seaton, Mayor of the eity ;.the Hon. Messrs. Hannegan and West- cott, of the Senate, and Gen. Dromgoole, of the House of Representatives; also Mr. Loudon, of Loudon co., Va., grand mephew ot the celebrated Paul Jones, of the American Revolutionary war.— Tae dianer was exceilent, the company joyous und ageeeable, the toasts pungent and patriotic, and wine and music as good as need be. It would be superiluous for me to say that the speeches of the hon. gentlemen above named were of the first order and in time with the occasion. Of Mr. Hannegan itis only necessary to say, in the words of the sen- timent given him, that he is “one of the O’Regon fa- muy,” @ true bora scion of Irish origia—aa eloquent advocate of our national rights and a fearless detend- er of our national honor. A purer, honester, or more patriotic statesman there is notin the nation than the Senator from indiana. His language is of the most ferveat aud nervous description, aad commands the entire attention of the Senate whenever he happens to address it. Mr. Haanegan is a young man of fine abilities, and promises, betore many years roll over his head, to hold a conspicuous position among the leading men of this nation, Gen. Dromgovle was quite familiar with Irish his- tory, and rei v knows more ot the ancient lore of that people, believe, than he does ot his own “ Backskins of the Old Dominion.” He, like Mr. Hannegan, is the son of Irish parents ; both are an honor to their own atid their fathets’ country. _ Mr. Westcott, who is a itleman ot tine acquire- ments and friendly social habite, gave a short but pretty speech, applicable, of course, to the occasion. le i# @ great friend to the Irish emigrants at Talla- bassee, and encourages them, in every way he can, to promote their happiness and prosperity.
