or perhaps in our compromise with England, she | will agree to take the Russian territory on the prin- ciple 0; jount occupancy under a new arrangement. | And Mr. Packenham, we did not see him ; perhaps he was at home, cogitating over the map of Oregon; but Mr. Bidwell, his secretary, was there ; and we are gratified to state, that from his associations with refined American society, he has become one of the most accomplished of gents in the metropolis :— “ in form and moving how express and admirabl And there is Mr. Serruags, the Belgian Charge.— ‘There is nothing remarkable about that man—noth- ing of arrogating superiority. He appears a plain and unpresuming citizen, a man who has no horror of the “vulgar democracy.” On the other hand, he is just as approachable and communicative as Governor Marey himself, that large old fashioned gentleman between those two ladies, the one in white, the other in blue. And. there is the venerable relic of Alexander Hamilton, how becomingly plain and simple her neat white cap and unpretending matronly costume. How truly beautiful and appropriate with the years and the character of that good old lady. Near her as the widow of the Ex-President Madison, with something more of oraament and decoration, but stll consistent with the spirit of the olden time ; that turban could not suit the mother of the Sultan more appropriately. Look at the constellation of diamonds, pearls, roses, japonicas, jewels, coronals, nbands, artificials, and of the wreathing forms and jewelled arms, and dark and sparkling eyes. Well may we exclaim with father Watts, when singing of the land of Canaan :— “ Oh the transporting rapturous scene, ‘That rises to my sight !” But, suppose we go down to the supper room t— | What a royal display of republican luxuries. This | is Mr. Buchanan's supper, and how his good honest | German constituency would open their eyes at this gorgeous exhibition ot the edibles. Mr. Buchanan has meant ate Germans—he has been metamor- phosed intoa French gourmand. Alas! alas! how the plain diet of the oh Keystone falls away before the artistieal arrangement of Monsieur Gautier, the Parisian confectioner. Not even the smell ot sour- krout upon the table. The Secretary of State has become Leet for krout; but there are boiled onions and Bologna sausages—that’s something that | smacks of old Pennsylvania; but where is the krout, | and the schmeerkaes !—where is the cider, the cider-royal, the corn whiskey, and the simmen beer ? ‘They are vulgar—they are so regarded by the Secre- | tary of State, and how can he face his people again | when he has become so proud as to be ashamed of | Krout and cider royal and simmen beer. And wh bas Mr. Buchanan repudiated these good old Dutel refreshments? There is a diplomatic secret at the bottom of it all. The royalhouse of Great Britain is Dutch—krout is Dutch,—the Secretary of State hates the royal house of Great Britain, and there- fore he repudiates krout. And he employs a Paris confectioner to curry favor with Louis Phillippe on the Oregon question and the balance of power in Mexico. Tne whole issue of the ‘balance of pow- er,” therefore, turns upon kroutand cider royal. It is as plain as the wink of the Secretary of State in his toast to Mons. Pageot. In conclusion, the supper was most elegant and bountiful. At least a thousand partook of it—at least a thousand bottles of champaigne were drank sin cluding certain Madeiras, clarets, and French bran- | dies. The whole supper out-and-out was French— Parisian—in the height of fashion. Mr. Buchanan is no longer a Democrat, he is a Frenchman—an eater of ices, glazed cakes and bon bons—and a repudiator of krout, sehmeerkaes and cider royal. Finally, the festival went off magnificently—the supper Was universally applauded and enjoyed ; and there was no abatement—no lack of champaigne from first to last. It did credit to the liberality and taste of the honorable, the Secretary of State,— ste ae! the manner in which he deported imself at the ball, and at the banquet, was such as might have been expected of a gentleman of his distinguished urbanity, and diplomatic ability. We close by tendering him our most distinguished con- | sideration. Wasuineton, Jan. 25, 1846, A Converted Jew Proclaiming the Unsearchable | Riches of Christ in the Capitol of this Great Con- Sederacy, ‘The Rev. Mr. Bonhomme, a French Jew, late from New York, preached to-day in the capitol, in behalf ot that very Redeemer of mankind, whom the fathers of Mr. Bonhomme crucified between two thieves. Mr. Bonhomme’s text was from Luke, chap. xxi, 24th verse, to wit :— “And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations; and Jerusalem shall bo trodden down among the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fullilled.” Mr. B. recapitulated the history and the prophe- cies of the dispersion and persecutions of the Jews for the last thirteen hundred years; yet the tribes had been miraculously preserved. ‘The sum of all the Jews dispePsed over the earth at this time, num- bered about fifteen millions, an aggregate equal to, or greater than that of Israel, in the days of David and Solomon. There were Jews in every cabinet in Europe. Marshal Soult was a Jew. Marshal Massena wasa Jew. The greatest financiers and capitalists in Europe were Jews. We were in- debted to the Jews tor the Bible, and for the cruci- fixion of Christ ; without which, the world could not have been redeemed. And the Jews were ap- | proximating Christianity. Mr. B. was a believing | Jew. Within a few years, 4,000 Jews had been converted in Europe to Christianity through the instramentalities of the London Sieaidukry So- ciety. A missionary for the benefit of the Jews was stationed at Jerusalem ; in addition to the corps re over Europe. Four or five hundred Jews had been converted in London, fifty in Scotland, | Wc. And of the fifteen thousand in the city of New | York, at least one thousand were secret balieqate in the Christian religion. There was a church in New York especially appropriated to such Jews as were disposed to hear the gospel of Christ, and him crucified. (Wonder if Major Noah goes to said church ) The Jews would all ultimately come into the fold of Christ, and then would come the millenium of universal peace, brotherhood, concord, and happi- ness. Mr. B. proposes a series of other sermons among the various churches of the city. Mr. B. had a large congprennon. His discourse was very inte- resting. The day was exceedingly fine and sum- mer-like, and the streets were bordered and inter- sected with rills and rivulets from the melting snow. But to return to Mr. B.’s sermon. Our cold snap was of short duration, and has been followed by a universal thaw, as all nature seemed to be in a melting mood yesterday. During the day, nearly every vestige of the ice and snow of last week floated off,and joined the mighty flood on its way to Chesapeake Bay. The news by the steamer has arrived at last, and has excited considerable surprise here by its pacific charac- ter.
