Important from Washington, | Our accounts last night trom Washington, are o f all kinds—that there is to be a re-construction’ of the Cabinet—that Mr. Buchanan goes upon the bench— that Mr Bancroft goes to Ber!in—"hot Mr. Walker goes into the Foreign Department of Stete—that there is a serious break up in the party—that Mr. | Calhoun is the “ star of the ascendant,” and that General Cass and the war party are in the dumps. With respect to Mexican news, accounts differ One says that Paredes will receive Mr. Slidell another, that he will not—a third, that the Presiden | and Cabjnet have resolved to make Mexico negoti- | ate and settle the business, or the ‘* Army of Obser- | vation” will cross the Rio Grande, and compel her todoso. All is peace about Oregon—all is excite- ment about Mexico, the Cabinet, and the rejection of Judge Woodward. Mexican Intelligence. The Washington Union of the 24th inst., gives | the following intelligence from Mexico :— By the arrival on the 14th instant, of the United States brig Porpoise, at Pensacola, (twelve days from Vera Cruz,) the intelligence of a revolution in Mexieo has been confirmed. It Vinee that on the morning of the 30th, the troops relied upon by the Government to defend it against Paredes, pronounced in his favor ; and the Government entered into terms of capitulation with General 4. He entered and took possession of the city on that day without opposition. The rumor was, that General Paredes manifested less opposition to the reception of Mr. Slidell, than the late President, Herrera. ia WasHinaox, Jan, 25, 1846 | The Hibernia News—Oregon—Mexico—Mr. Shdell —Spanish Fleet—Santa Anna sold his Country to Spain—“Balance of Power’”—Critical State of Affairs. Every body—every living soul, as far as we have heard their opinions, war men and anti-war men, democrats and whigs, men, women and children, native and adopted, white, dappled and black, every living soul, is delighted with the pacific indications from England. We received the news yesterday | by telegraph at the capitol about 3 o’clock, and the evening train brought us an extra Baltimore Sun with the good news itself of the healthy and anti- rabid tone of the British press and government. | We await the ample compilation of the extra Herald You can’t make it too voluminous. The Oregon notice will probably be resumed to- morrow inthe House. Mr. Pendleton (the lone | Whig star of Virginia) having the floor. We expect a great speech, adapted to the news by the Hibernia. ‘e expect the arrival of Mr. Slidell every day now. Indeed, if he manages his return as adroitiy ashe did his departure, we should hesitate to bet that he was not now in the city. It he can only re- main in Mexico, until Paredes shall have fairly es- tablished his administration, he might yet succeed in buying the peace of that government, the bounda- ot the Rio Grande, and a segment of Northern alifornia. But there is something remarkably ominous in that fleet of Spanish men-of-war now in the Gulf. Taken in conjunction with the return to that latitude of “the man in the white hat,” and with the alleged collusions between France and Spain to the estal ‘blishment of a branch of the Bourbons in | Mexico, andalso with the reputed correspondence | Kept up between Santa Anna and his agents, at Ve- raCruz, and in the Mexican capital, and thence | | | | | between this same Santa Anna and the .| Court. of Madrid, it| may be safely con- | eluded that | this « maritime demonstration of the Don Jehns or Demi-Johns before oe doors of onr unlucky neighbor, 18 a bona fide des- cent of one or more of the European powers | upon Mexico, with the forgone intent of correcting the * balance of power upon this continent,” ac- cording to the programme ot Monsiur Guizot. With this view ot these transactions, the ten war steamers ot Mr. Fairfield will, perhaps, be required off the coast of Texas as soon as they can be brought into service, if not sooner. Should it be affirmed and established that Santa Anna has suc- | ceeded in selling his country to Spain and France. and the man in the light-colored sombrero, it will | bean incident-in history which will place the one- legged Republican Dictator in a more disgracetully mae attitude before the world than hie slaughter of Fannin’s brigade, vor the decimation of quent prisoners. The known character of the Can, credit which Spain would be ready to give | to his statements of the interval weakness of co, and its easy capture frem internal diseensions, | are strong presumptive testimony in support of the suspicien, that an European invasion and subjuga- | tion of Mexico has been resolved upon, and that the fleet appointed to open the way to the mo¥ement, 1s | thai fleet of 3 nanish war junks already concentra- ted in the Gulf. Here, then, isa case of foreign interference that | | will require something more than the mere abstrac- | tion of declared hostility against all sorts of Euro- | pean interposition—a case which will call off our | attention and resolution to cut off the English from their proposed or supposed new settlement in Pata- | gonia, from the affairs of the South American Ori- entals and Argentines and Montevideans, to the di- | rect question, whether the suspected. Spec of Spain, | France, and the white hat man, will embrace in the occupation of Mexico, the boundary of the Nueces | asclaimed by the Mexican government, to be the | southern boundary of Texas. If so, the present | prospects of the Oregon war are a mere farthing candle, contrasted with the “ inevitable war,” upon Monsieur Guizot’s new proposition for a Teorganiza- | tion upon this continent of the “balance of power.” | One thing is certain, that more than any thing else, | the present complex, duplex, intricate, critical, por- | tentous, momentous, and nasty condition of things | in and about Mexico, must contribute to a compro- mise upon the “ Autres vast, and deserts idl Rude rocks and hills whose heads touch Heaven,” known as the Oregon territory. We are in the midst of the greatest events. They are down upon us like an avalanche, and we must stand upon our dignity, upon our prudence, upon our firmness, and upon the egtics of self-preservation; but this is not to be done by a declaration of war. against all Europe, nor by the forcible expulsion of the Hudson’s Bay Company trom the Oregon terri- tor, We have great faith in the President. We be- lieve he has the foresight and that cautious delibe- ration necessary for the crisis, and thi prompt action that ever results from calm re: lection id just decisions. e shall look into this subject more elaborately in aday or two. At present there appear to be no se- rious apprehensions in regard to Mexican re, 80 completely is the public mind absorbed in digesting * the pacific news from England Wasuineton, Jan. 25, 1846. Mr. Bwchanan’s Ball and Banguet. Mr. Buchanan takes the premium. He is fairly entitled to the banner. Not even the ten dollar in- auguration ball at Carusi’s saloon, in March last, was more brilliant than Mr. Buchanoan’s at the same place, last evening. It was a bumper—the house was crammed full by the upper ten thousand, including a condimental pepper and salt sprinkling of the sixpenmes. {t was a magnificent affair. The name of Mr. Buchanan was a voucher that could not be questioned ;—hence, everybody of the twelve or fifteen hundred invited, went over; and not a few of the extremely fashionable, by going fashion- ably late, had to come away, not because the door was shut, but because the house was full. The President, and most of his family, the cabi- net, the corps diplomatique, the army and navy, the corporation, the Congress, é&c., &c. —such a lot of stipendaries upon the charity of the masses, we never saw collected together in that saloon before.
