Four speeches to-day in the House, upon the Ore- gon question—Mr. Cocke, of Tennessee, (whig,) leading off for peace ; Mr. Redinger, of Virginia (demoerat,) in a beantiful, strong, and effective speech, pleading for a postponement of the contem- plated war with England. In deprecating the de- clamations of the Hotspurs of the House against the rapacity of Great Britain, Mr. B. quoted from a late letter of ** The Doctor,” in the New York Her- ald, our specimen for the benefit of the Buncombe men, which told admirably well upon the commit- tee. Mr. B. gave a passing hit at Mr. Giddings, and said that if that gentlemen and his friends should come to the South to excite a servile war, there were hosts of feithful slaves who would rise up to the defence of their masters, and expel the in- truders. Waswixotow, Jan. 15,,1846. The National Intelligencer, on Monday last, came | out with a leader, in which it Was stated that those who were in favor of peace ought not to rely too much upon the present state of things to fulfil their hopes. The article Was evidently and premeditated- ly intended to operate upon the nerves of all the | old women 1n the land, and with a view to the defeat of Mr. Allen’s resolutions of notice, which came up in the Senate that day for consideration. | Mathew L. Davis, who corresponds for the same | paper, over the signature of “A Calm Observer,” | chimes in most harmoniously with his employers here—and, between them both, a war panic is kept | up, for what purpose may be easier divined than | deseribed. This isnot all. Gen. Cass has been severely as- | sailed by all the whig presses of the country, ae well as by hordes of Wall street speculators and stock jobbers, who are not inthe secret of this movement, for offering his resolutions of enquiry into the condition of our military defences. [n this he has not only carried out his own views of the necessity of this inquiry, at this peculiar state of | our. foreign relations, but those of an eminent | whig Senator from the State of Delaware. This latter fact will not be denied. Now, sir, what do these things prove? Why, that the ‘whig party are secretly urging on the democrats to war measures, whilst their papers are denouncing them, and alarm- ing the country in regard to the same. Tt would be more manly for them to take an open and decided stand against the notice, than to play a double game + of this kane, in which momentous questions are in- volved, for the purpose of creating political capital. ‘Whatever course t! jovernment may pursue in re- lation to Oregon, there-is no danger of a war with England. Such a war would be her ruin, both at home and abroad. This will appear from the fol- lowing considerations: First. Mr. Buchanan, however, still wears a white cravat, and Mr. Walker still figures away upon the ad valorems,as though the ten war steamers of Mr. Fairfield were a mere “ ruse de guerre.” The American eagle has been so beslavered by the tongues of the war-dogs, that the bird is sick of the smell of blood and brimstone.
