vo the issues of the country bariks a much greater ~ circulation ia this city, than they otherwise would have, ‘The Issues of banks in the most distant sections of the country are redeemed at 4 less discountznow than for years previously. The cause of this improvement in the currency, so far as the value of paper!money goes, can de found in the progress made in liquidating th fairs of some of the defunct banking institutions of the South and West. The bills of banks in Louisiana, Ala- bama, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan, are redeemed inthis city at rates varying from } to,2} perjcent. The Seventh Ward Bank has declared a‘dividend of 3} Per cent, payable on the 2nd January. The case of the State of Ohio vs. the Bankzof Steuben- ville, of that State, was tried at the last term of the Court in Steubenville county.3gThe object of the,'suit was to make the stockholders redeem the bills and pay the debts ofthe bank. Although a final decision was not made, the Court expressed the opinion that the st 6 holders must pay the debts of the bank, and ordered aa ‘account to be taken of the outstanding debts, and proog to be taken as to who were the steckholders when the bank failed. The Cabotand Chicopee manufacturing corporations, at Springfield, Mass., have made a ten and six per cent, semi-annual dividend. It shows him to be a man of sound judge ment and foresight, and ready atonce to place the country in a proper attitude, should war come upon us.
