Ishall commence, my dear Napoleon, to give you ableaux of the members of the Senate of the Uni- | ted States—ot their views—and of their standing | and influence in the pathway of this glorious Union: Senator Dickinson will be the subject for my first dissertation. He is justin the meridian of life, and is the true representative of the young democracy ofthe Empire State—ardent and enthusiastic—he charms with the fervor of his eloquence as well as the graphicness and frankness of his conversations ; and with the strength of intellect that few men possess, he will stand or fall the firm and fearless advocate of James K. Polk. His triumphant victory over Young--his sliding, almost imperceptibly, from the slim cliques of the Van Burenists, makes him a man more feared than loved, for he never stoops to intrigue, and says “yes” and “no”—words that Mr. Van Buren was never knowa to utter; whatever he advocates is done with fearlessness, and, conse- quently, well done ; and, as a publie man, his fideli- ty is unwavering as iron.
