Harlem, and Pennsylva: 5's, closed firm at yesterday’s prices. Th les were not very large to-day, but the bulls anticipate an ad- vance in prices during next week. Sterling exchange;closed firm to-day at 8} a 8} per cent. premium. In the speculative stocks, par- ticularly railroads, the operations have been very exten- id very great. The transactions tual or even probable income ies, but are thoroughly of a gam- bling character,and the rise is caused by the monopolizing by a certain party of a majority of the shares, in order to compel the bears,or those who may have sold for delivery, to pay such prices as the bulls may demand. Heretofore, the result of such cornering has proved disastrous to all the parties concerned; and what may be the result of the present gambling transactions, time alone must prove. Money is very abundant, as many prefer to loan temporerily at low rates, and await the action of Congress before permanently ig their capital. Bills on London have been freely offered at our quota- tions, and the busi: for the steamer has been mode- Of bills on the continent the supply has been limited, and rates fully maintained. The result of the recent election in this State shows an increased democratic majority at the time when the three prominent questions for decision, viz: Ore- gon, the Sub-treasury, and a modification of the tari were clearly understood to be the favorite mea- sures of the present administration at Washington. ‘The Executive, in bringing them before the country, may add increased weight to his arguments, when the voice of so important a State as this is, through the bal- lot box ed in his favor | Rewp'y, yours, CAMMANN, WHITEHOUSE & CO. We rather think this is a misrepresentation of the con- dition of things on this side of the Atlantic. It is true that stocks have been affected by the recent views many have taken of affairs, but they are more settled now. The ct of our foreign relations is more pa- cific, and its effect on the market is already felt, and will be still further felt. ‘The assets of the City Bank of Buffalo were sold at auction in that city on the 12th inst., under the direction of the receiver. The gross amount of the sales was $: 27475. The wore valued at $452,183 96, accor- ding to the schedule. Thii statement exhibits the rottenness of these defunct institutions, and shows thatthe nominal value of their assets so greatly exceeds the market value, that the proceeds go but a little way towards meeting their liabilities. From recent returns it appears that the aggregate va- lue of property in Mississippi, is shown to be $71,991,321, and the aggregate tax assessed to be $413, The amount of money at interest, and in the form of bills, bonds, &c., is valued at $1,406,937 ; merchandize sold by regular merchants at $5,462,855 ; bank stock at $9,959,- 476; taxable land at $53,780,404. There are in the State 41,223 voters ; number of slaves 222,778. The taxable property of this State is very large, anda small average tax would produce sufficient revenue to meet the current expenditures of the government and the interest on tho State debt. We look for some movement in the Legislature of Mississippi, towards the acknowledg- ment of the public debt, and some provisions made for the payment of the annual interest. The people of that State cannot resist much longer the influence of public opinion upon this question, and may, at a day not far hence, assume the indebtedness, and remove, if possible, the stain of repudiation from the escutcheon of that com- monwealth.
