Saturday, Nov. 15, 1845-6 P. M. Quotations for stocks to-day appear to be very unset- tled. Long Island fell off } per cent., Norwich and Wor- cester }, Stonington 1}, North American Trust 1. Can- ton went up } percent., Vicksburg }, Morris Canal j, Mlinois }, Farmers’ Loan }. Harlem, aad Pennsylvania 6's, closed firm at yesterday’s prices. The sales were hot very large to-day, but the bulls anticipate an ad- vance in prices during next week. Sterling exchangerclosed firm to-day at 8} a 8} per cent. premium. The demand has been moderate, and the supply very large. ‘The following; letter was circulated in the street this morning; it was probably sent to England in the Cale- donia :— ‘above articles are Broulway, Wig Maker aud Vertisement New Yonx, Novenper 14, 1846. The variation in the prices of the leading securiti have not been material, though the tendency has been townward, and the amount of United States, Ohio, Kentucky ' and Pennsylvania loans in the market much increase In the speculative stocks, par- ticularly railroads, the operations have been very exten- sive, and the rise rapid and very great. The transactions are not based upon any actual or even probable income of the different companies, but are thoroughly of a gam- bling character, and the rise is caused by the monopolizing by a certain party of a majority of the shares, in order to compel the bears,or those who may have sold for delivery, to pay such prices asthe bulls may demand. Heretofore, the result of such cornering has proved disastrous to all the parties concerned; and what may be the result ofthe present gambling transactions, time alone must prove. Money is very abundant, as many prefer to loan temporarily at low rates, and await the action of Congress before permanently using their capital. ‘on London have been freely offered at our quota- tions, and the business for the steamer en mode- rate.’ Of bills on the continent the supply has been limited, and rates fully maintained. ‘The result of the recent election in this State shows an increased democratic majority at the time whon the three prominent questions for decision, viz : Ore- gon, the Sub-treasury, and a modification of the tariff were clearly understood to be the favorite mea sures of the present administration at Washington. ‘The Executive, in bringing them before the country, may add increased weight to his arguments, when the voice of so important a State as this is, through the bal- lot boxes, declared in his favor Resp'y, yours, CAMMANN, WHITEHOUSE & Co. We rather think this is a misrepresentation of the con- dition of things on this side of the Atlantic. It is true that stocks have been affected by the recent views many have taken of affairs, but they are more settled now. The aspect of our foreign relations is more pa- cific, and its effect on the market is already felt, and will be still further felt. The assets of the City Bank of Buffalo were sold ay auction in that city on the 12th inst. under the direction of the receiver. The gross amount of the sales was $52,- 274 75. The assets were valued at $452,183 96, accor- ding to the schedule. We annex a list of the assets, with the amount re: d at the sale attached to each: — Assets or City Bank Burrato. ichedule. This statement exhibits the rottenness of these defunct institutions, and shows that the nominal velue of their assets so greatly exceeds the market value, that the proceeds go buta little way towards meeting their liabilities. From recent returns it appears that the aggregate va- lue of property in Mississippi, is shown to be $71,991,321, and the aggregate tax assessed to be $413, The amount of money at interest, and in the form of bil bonds, &e., is valued at $1,406,937 ; merchandize sold by regular merchants at $5,462,855 ; bank stock at $9.9 476; taxable land at $53,780,404, There are in the 41,228 voters ; number of slaves 222,778. The taxable property of this State is very large, and a small average tax would produce sufficient revenue to meet the current expenditures of the government and the interest on tho State debt. We look for some movement in the Legislature of Mississippi, towards the acknowledg- ment of the public debt, and some provisions made for the payment of the annual interest. The people of that State cannot resist much longer the influence of public opinion upon this question, and may, at a day not far hence, ume the indebtedness, and remove, if possible, the stain of repudiation from the escutcheon of that com- monwealth. Wall ! this terri- ble man, finding that all this’ made very little im- pression on the President, gave him to understand thai “he could show him how great was his influ- ence, and he would find it out, too.” Thus for the hundredth time this trick was tried, and for the hundredth time, of course it failed. A knowledge of such facts, has done mere to in- crease mig epee for Mr. Polk than anything in the world. e are really coming back again, I verily believe, to the good old days of Old Hickory, when everybody will understand they must be Straight- torward—when humbug was below par—when ho- nesty was the best Paley Only let Mr. Polk fol low out the course he has begun—only let him stand firm when Congress meets, and the conflict- ing waves dash up around him—when cligue after hate batteries, and lay their snares to entrap, to commit, to flatter, to wheedle, to inti muidate, to out-wit, to out-general, and lethim keep the country as steadily in view in all his appoint- ments, as Lam certain he will in his general policy, and the cliques will not move him any more than they moved the “ old General”—and foiled, deteat- ed, and ashamed, they will retreat from the field, and have their trouble for their pains. 1 was talking with a very intelligent gentleman here from Ohio last night—he made one remark that struck me. “ There never was,” said he, “ but once before so glowing an opportunity for a President to found jasting and-noble fame as now. We have reached @ new era, a new age, when the policy of the ad- ministration is to decide the course we are to take for a century to come. The whole Mississippi valley is stitred to the centre about Oregon and England. We are now ina condition to establish our policy, and give impulse to the cause of univer- sal liberty and civilization.” And such 1 believe to be the case—and such a President I believe we have in Mr. Polk. Like the Herald, Igo for the men who go for the country—who will fulfil its great and glorious destiny Macuteve.it. Wasuinaton, Nov. 14, 1845. Reception at the White House to-night—just se- venty-three people there—all very well behaved— Mrs. Polk elegantly dressed, kind, familiar and sim- ple in her manners, gaining the good will of every- body—Mr. Polk (the Herald always mentions the ladies first, as every gentleman should first address the lady of the White House before he speaks to the President ; let some people take the hint;) well, Mr. Polk tired to death, for he has been teased to death by office-beggars—by loafers—for I know not how many hours to-day—it is astonishing how that man preserves his equarimity—his courtesy—his patience! Is it not really too bad. One fact is just as good as fifty The other day,a regular ale-house politician who had done some service (asbe thought) to the party, came to Washington. Away he dash- ed up to the mansion—sent up his name, (early in the morning,) requesting an audience. The Presi- dent was engaged. Again, an earnest message, saying he had come from a great distance on public business of great importance, and he must see the President a moment—only a moment. Well, as soon as the President had tinished a letter, the gen- tleman was ushered in. What was the gentleman’s business? Why, he had come a great distance to get an office, and there he sat (the President ought not to have any ehair in his room but the one he oc- cupies) for a full hour—teasing, begging, showing papers, petitions, for a paltry office; and all the while the President had the forbearance to endure this unsufferable bore. This is his his custom. What is the consequence ?- Why, that time the bore stole from Mr. Polk—nut from the nation, as a letter- writer said the other day—for he cuts off from his sleep the number of hours thus lost necessary to make up the-given amount of time he feels belongs to the nation. How many hours a day do you sup- pose Mr. Polk works? Ill tell you. He rises at daylight, and takes an early walk, und as ear'y breaktast—works ull 12—gives audience till two— dines earl —otten till near morning. He has been knowa frequently to pass most of the nght in reading pa- pers of no manner of importance to anybody but some applicant for an insignificant office—tor he would be informed of all the facts in the case. He willnot make an appointment without being satis- fied of the case, and all the circumstance: the first President we ever had, except General Washington, who observed this good rule. and works atterwards till late at night He is If he can consult the wishes of his friends, he will do it. But often he has been obliged to disregard the recommendations and the applications of {riends even of his own Cabinet. He will be ind. pendent -—he will not select men he does not believe quali- fied tor the post. Now what is the natural result of all this?’ He cannot please everybody—there are scores of applicants for every vacancy, and all must fail but the chosen man; and ail the disappointed swear vengeance. J have been struck here during the last few months with the folly, the insufferable folly, of applicants, and I have not been disappoint- ed to see the very strongest men fail by bad ma- nagement. To-morrow I am going to give the people of this country some go will save hundreds of men a good deal of money and a good deal of time and a good deal of mortification, and save a large number of men from failure in making their applications, if they will follow it. But I suppose it will do those no good for whom it is intended—tor it’s a lamentable fact, that those people who stand in the most per- ishing need of advice, are the last fellows in the world to take it. ‘They are like rich sinners in New York, who go and hear sermon after sermon about avarice, and apply it all to their poor neighbors. But you have one good rule, among others—like a faithful preacher, you warn the victim, although he may heed younot. To-morrow, then, [shall preach about—how to get office.
