Railroad Company, giving a statement of its condition for the year ending September ist, 1845, stated that the whole debt of the company was on that day $645,929. The revenue for the past financial year was $71,538, and the expenses proper of the road and company $34,800. The expenses for keeping in repair the wooden track be- tween Elizabethtown and Harrisburgh was $8,678, or $482 per mile, while the 18 miles between Dillersville and Elizabethtown has been only $1,408, or $78 25 per mile, being less fhan one sixth of the flat rail. The bad condition of that part of the road has been the cause of aconsiderable falling off in the freight business over it. Four thousand additional shares have been disposed of the proceeds of which are to be appropriated to the re- maining unfunded debts of the company, and to laying the H rail on the balance of the road. ‘The Citizens’ Insurance Company of St. Louis, Mo., have declared a dividend of fifteen por cent on the profits of the company forthe last six months. This dividend is the best indication of the prudence with which the affairs of this company are managed, and the favor which it finds with the public. We learn that all the stock on the Boston, Concord, and Montreal Railroad, has been secured. All that is not otherwise provided for on or betore the day of meet- ing of the corporation the 22d of October, is guaranteed to be taken in Boston, by gentlemen who are abundantly able and willing to carry the work forward. Assu" rances are also given that the road through Vermont shall be built as soon as it can be met at the line by the Canadians. J. DAVISON, of this city, have lately perfected an apparatus for the curing of Provisioas, and the preservation of woods and other substances, which proinises to be of vast importance ‘The apparatus is very sim d compact. A cistern to hold is ic pressure being found suificient. hole apparatus—so simple as never to get r, and yet astonishing in its operations. It can be made of an: Iarge evough to carry on the largest operations of our largest fon packers, and small enough for the use of th smallest families, and to occupy. litle more, space than a rel. To prove the importance of this invention, we will state a few of itsactual results. «Ist. Meat warm and just killes the hottest of summer, ‘Th: was put into the cylinder in imal heat was mi & test weather in summer, and it kept as well as meat ordinarily cured in winter. 2J. Itisfound that the. blood is completely drained out of wat the steeping in hogsheads, as in the ordivary By this process, the cured provisions acquire very .superior qualities, the juices, being retained, wich, inthe ordiaary method, are expelled, ‘The weight ts increased in proportion to the quantity of fluid infused iuto the meat. E 31, In the presence of Mr. Tw man, pork and hams were place Cylin the formar was cured. ‘Th hams were left in six hours louger taken out, tried to the bone, found perfectly cured, and trani ferred to the smoke house. Mr. Tunis, of the house of James ¢. Hall Co. of that place, 18 now in the city, and can be re- ferred to. 4th. Meat in whi h were ski»pers—an insect very difficult to get rid off—when placed in the, cylinder, waf freed at ouces as the air was gradually exhausted, the skippers. made their way to the surface, in search of air," where im afew minutes they perished—remaining fast on the surfice of the meat, and not mingling with the brine. pages Sch. Old hams, black, and spoiled in appearance and taste, ell washed, scraped and dried, aud then subjected to the on of the apparatus, with sweetened pickle; in a few hey were taken out and smoked, and in looks and taste it was almost impossible to tell them from new hams, Gth. Some hams that were very far gove, after being prepar- ed as in the last case. were placed in the apparatus and impreg- nated with a weak solution of lime, aiterwards taken out aud thoroughly washed and dried. They were then placed in the eylinder again, and im ted with the proper ham pickle, taken out and smoked, the same result as in the last case. ‘They were nearly equal to sound hams ‘ 7th. Western hams, trimmed and cleaned, and subjected to this process, could be distinguished from city cured hams only by the be: ss. Lastly, b @ great any other advan- tages, we may say that wi apparatus, time, weather and imate are of no consequence. Auy sort of pickle may be used—spiced, sweetened, weak or strong brine, Meats, fish, rut bles, wood—in fact, auy thing whieh can be 1d by being impregnated with’ ny fluid, may be effeet- is apparatus. The same. gentlemen have invented a efor cutting up carcases for curing, which is only iufe- portance to the first, named. This machine, ali with the speed of thought, will cur an entire carcase into pieces of the proper size and shape for curing, and this without any y ing; and the pieces fall {rom the cutter down an inclined plane into the cylinder of the curing apparatus. With these two machines it sesms to us that the ultimate of economy in time and labor is attained. _ ‘The advantages which we ai in the application of the inventi the spplieat of Cincinnati, a practical ofS z pattical ? ion to pickling aud curing. But fo pod is placed in the cylinder, with @ solution of salt, which, for and use excepted—will render it nts alted between the planking and $ not enter the wood—it is only brine from it, and this only partially, while this apparatus will do iteffectually, Chemical substances can even he mixed with the brine, which will color the wood for cabinet makers—others to render it, in a great measure, incom- bustible—others to give 1t greater tenacity for hoops, & others to give it odor, and, in fine, there is no end to the chang- es which can thus be produ rich enough in creations of this kiud to satisfy the most uscaprice. If itis desirable to metalize, or rather to foss for rail ways, the proc ply this:—The pieces after hwving been firted by the earpenter or joiner for their places, are first cured as before mentioned; the salt fluid withdrawn, ‘and a solution of sulphate of iron is let in from another cistern, which has a separate pipe to the cylinder—it is treated with this fluid as with the former. ‘The wood is again withdrawn, dried, and returned to the cylinder, when a. solution 'of mu: | nite of lime 1s let in from another vessel, which, coming inte contact with the sulphate of iron with: | | in the wood, decomposes it and forms an insoluble of sulphate of lime or Gypsum, within the wood, an ate of iron, the other new compound, goes about So the wood becomes thoroughly impregnated with ard as arock, and it is yet as tough as before. - The ex of pre} 2000 sleepers, enough for a mile of railway, would not exceed $300, Some'‘of the first engineers have exrressed their confidence inthe invention. TETER CLINTON, Rio Grande upon our own terms—to sceneniecee first, the independence of Texas; secondly, her right to dispose of her supreme government and her soil at her discretion—thirdly, to make the surren- der of the disputed territory, through negotiations, an offset to. the balances of indemnities legered against Mexico in the archives of the State Depart- ment of this Government. 3 We expect such recommendations from the Pre- sident on this subject, as will lead to the appoint- ment of a special commissioner, to propose such overtures to the Mexican government, as, it carried out, willestablish our southern bouni a along the Rio Grande, secure the payment of Mexican in- demnities to our citizens by our Government assuming the responsibility, and re-open a peaceru: | commercial intercommunication between the two repubi:e= On the question of the Tariff. the OUnzon ot last evening expressly declares the 20 per cent ad vate- rem as the revenue system of the President. He will, therefore, recommend such a Tariff. And what will be the result? It will be laid on the ta- ble in the House !by a vote of two-thirds—it will fall as still-born under the ayes and noes as John Tyler’s Exchequer. Nothing under Gen. M’Kay’s bill can pass, and even that, though so framed in its impositions upon cold iron, as to conciliate if pos- | sible, the democrats of Pennsylvania, failed in that | conciliation. oat Att Ingersoll, Bidlack, and * | all, to lay out the bill upon the tabl le, without any | lamentation over its corpse. But the night the | bill died the death, there was some of an Irish | wake among certain democrats over the event ; but there were no tears. Weathersfield onions would not have wrung them out of the eyes of Charles Ja- red on that night. And if the President intends the bold Jacksonian movement of a 20 per cent horizon- | taller he will fall through sifter. Persisting in it he | has not the personal popularity to withstand the shock ef the opposition that will be arrayed CePA him. That opposition will be more extended than was the combination against Gen, Jackson in his | war upon the bank—more numerous, more formida. ble. The suddenness of the transition from the 20, | 30, 50, 77, 120, 150 and 200 per centums of the pre- | sent tariff down to the dead procrustean level of 20 per cent on everything—asilks, cottons, iron, salt, and what not, is a movement too bold for the concur- | rence of Congress—involving too much present dan- | ger, however wise the policy in its ultimate opera- | tons and effects upon national manufactures and in- ternational exchanges. | Nor are we certain that the dead level of 20 per | cent is the South Carolina beau ideal of a tanifi. | We have heard of discriminations for protection upon a revenue tariff in the tariff, but we have heard, also, of discriminations for revenue, regard- less of protection, in the”south. According to this | latter system, if 15 per cent upon cold iron will bring price 123 cents each, to be hadatthe | more revenue into the treasury than 77, it is the better rate of duty, and if that rate at which most | revenue can be derived, it is the best of all. By | the rule of incidental protection, Pennsylvania will | adhere to her 77 per cent upon iron, and dispute \ the propriety of any duty whatever upon such ne- ‘wanDManaceR | cessary articles of life as sugar and molasses. Amid | these and numerous other conflicting interests and | claims, the President will have, perhaps, taken the | safest course after all in selcene Sie neutral ground of the Compromise Act. And though a 20 per cent | horizontal line can not be made to penetrate the ron mines of Pennsylvania, it may turn out the most reasonable interpretation of the “ Kane letter” that could be adopted, though that letter is as well adapted to the tariff of ’42 as to the Compromise Act, or any intermediate tariff. Never saw such a letter as that. That single idea of ‘equal protec- tion” to all the great industrial interests of the country was worth the Presidency, though of no in- trinsic value at all. ‘‘ It was something—nothing,” and yet it was every thing. Although it was not conclusive with any body—it was satistactot | every body. [t stood up as straight in South Caro- | lina as it did in New Hampshire, and as straight in ten to one those Pennsylvanians thought it squinte: at the tariff of ’42, while it was as clear as mud to | the South Carolinians that it was the Compromise Act. | The Union “insinuates” that the loss of ok | may be in part attributed to the course of the Charleston fercury in misrepresenting the atti- tude of the administration upon the subject of the Tariff, while the fact is, it is the ambiguous, inex- fe, “an’ we could, an’ if we would” editorials the one paper or the other had any influence in the election at all. : We are apprehensive of a defeat of the democrats inOhio. They are divided among themselves on the question of the State banks, whether they shall be reformed or destroyed—they are divided upon the | subject of the apportionment of the pro rata of feder- al patronage to Ohio. The administration has given to the State several of the best offices at head-quar- ters ; but ee tea is that held by Dr. Miller, third assistant P.M. General. The orthodox d res for Ladies enly, 25 | mocracy of Ohio regard the retention of this gentle- man as tampering with the Tyler-Shannon-Wooster | bank clique.
