Mr. Schreiber—Hackett and Theatricals— The Difficulty in Slicer-dom—The Backsliding of Mr, Gough—Markets, Sc. The Rey. Mr. Schreiber was followed to the grave yesterday by a long line of mourning friends. ‘The Rev. Archbishop Eccleston preached the funeral sermon, the church being crowded to excess. He indirectly alluded to the quarrel which I recently noticed as existing among | the church members of St. Vincent, respecting the salary | of the sexton and the will of the late Mr. Gildea, ad- | ministering a merited rebuke for such unchristian con- duct, and intimating that they were now mourning over the chastisement ofan offended God fortheir misdeeds. Hackett had another poor house last nightat the Front | he never could draw a house | treet was better attended, | Street Theatre—the fact ii in Baltimore. The Holli but by no means full. Mrs, Wallack appeared as the Widow Cheerly in the Soldier's Daughter. I notice inthe papers this morning a card from the Reverend Henry Slicer, relative to the recenly circulated vamphlet, declaring it to be a tissue ot falsehoods, which Ke will not further netice, unless the authors anmask themselves. These difficulties in churches are much to be deplored, and no denommation seems to be clear of them, though some manage pretty effectually to screen the particulars from the public. If hatred, malice, un- charitableness, and all the other evils of the devil’s teaching, are brought into requisition by those who ofli- ciate behind the scenes of God's sauctury, what are we to expect from those who acknowledge no such re- straints on their unbridled and sinful nature? It can no longer be a wonder that the occupants of the third tier at the theatre occasionally have an aifectionate squabble among themselves, when they have such an example set them! Nor can it be wondered that the unrestrained de- sires of the fire runners oacasionally batter one-another’s heads, and create an uproar in the city, when the “ pil- Jars of the Church” almost come to blows in the street ! Shame! shame! on such doings—either throw up your ample of him whom you profess te worship. They consider it as another strong evidence of the power of rum over the human mind, and think | that it should incite the friends of temperance to stronger exertions to subdue the evil. The tavern keepers do not consider it as a sudden fall from sobriety to intemperance, but that it is a public exposition of what he bas been doing secretly ever since he “took the pledge.” They know the power of liquor, and insist that noman whe has once given it full sway can ever wholly give it up without substituting therefore some equally Paweciul stimulants ‘That opium is extensively used as asubstitute for liquor by reformed drunkards there canbe no doubt. The leaier of the temperance men in Philadelpiia, now a member of Congress, whilst ona recent visit to this city, had not only opium in his breath, but its destructive effects were traceable in his eyes us well as every lineament fin his countenance. Sales of whiskey in barrels are now being made a nts, and of hogsheads at 23 cents}per gallon stock is very lignt. Paitapenenta, Sept.17, 1845. There is consi¢erable speculation going on in this city, in relation to the arrest of a Frenchman nained D’Au, velle, alias De Delpit, who was arrested a few days since oncharge of forgery. It is said that he is chief of a Sang of forgers, and that his arrest is more important than that of Mouroe Edwards. A large number of drafts, principally of Southern banks, were found upon him, said to be in a kind of transition state, or prepared for alteration from lower to higher denominations. A con: tederate of his, it is eaid, is now in prison under sen- tence, and the supposition is that they effected between | " orfolk, Charleston, Savan- 8, siuce March last. He them forgeries, by which six or eight thousand doll. have been filched in Boston, N nah, Augusta, and New Orle: is now in custody. ‘Phe two o'clock line from New York did not arrive till seven o'clock last evening, the delay being occa- sioned by acollapse of several flues of the locomotive boiler near Princeton. Allowing the waterto get too low in the tank, was the cause of the accident. The Mail Pilot line was also detained by the locomo- tive running off the track, and did not arrive till one o’clock in the morning. In addition to this accident, a gentleman whose baggage is marked Capt. R. De Lut- zen, tell overboard when passing trom the boat to the | shore, and was drowned. A tal for murder is now going on in the Quarter Ses- sions—the defendant is named W, and the facts prove that one loafer knocked another ia the head in the course of a quarrel and accidentally killed him. ‘The trial ex- cites no interest whatever. ‘The trial of Mulholland and Regan, charged with the | murder of a man named Burns, in a riot out at Moya- mensing last spring, comes on to-morrow. It willcause considerable excitement, from the partizan religious | feeling which prevails among the friends and enemies of the aceuued. They are Irish too! originating in a sectarian dispute. Mr. and Mrs. Kean appeared again last night, as Bene. holics, and the affair dick and Beatrice, in Shakspeare’s comedy of “ Much | Ado About Nothing.” The house was crowded. Both parts were admirably performed; the artists were better | supported than on the evening previous, and there was great applause from the beginning to the end of the play.
