There have been re- | cently imported into New York, 116 bales of coarse | Brazilian of the “kind and sort,” under the value of | 7 cents per pound; but of this invoice, there are | some five bales of the same ‘kind or sort,” or “qual- ity,” of greater value than 7 cents, from the wool | in said five bales being washed. The law provides that where a portion of an invoice of such wool, ' bale, or bales, may be of better “quality” than the residue, or the 7 cents mmunum, the whole lot shall be subject to the maximum of 3 cents per pound, and 30 per cent ad valorem. Coarse wools of less value than 7 cents, are charged with a Sa mum of five per cent. We have not the law before us, but this a5 recollect of it. The question which puzzles the collector of New York and his deputies, | 1s whether “quality” applies to ‘‘value.” #, ether | a pound of coarse wool of the ‘same sort,” by being cleaned and washed, and thus increased in its value | per pound, is under the senae of the law an article | of “better quality.” Mr. Walker’s decision may be | Sapecied on Monday in the negative. " Gen. Thos. J. Green, of Texas, one of the Mier | prisoners, is atthe United States, with his old friend Dr. Archer. Gen. Green has an interesting work in press of the Mier expedition, and its disastrous re- sults, with maps and illustrations, which will prove of great service to the War Department, in view of hostilities with Mexico. N There was music this evening at the President’s grounds as usual, and a fashionable official con- course in attendance. : We have another camp meeting in full blast with- in four miles of the city. The entire sub-stratum of onr district population will be there to-morrow. Mr. Warxer is being brought to account for cer- | tain of the late removals in your Custom House.— | The chances are that there will be some re-instate- | ments. Among others, a great effort is making for Agnew. x | ‘The larger offices in the departments here will be held in abeyance till the mee ing of Congress, | ammunition to bear upon the printing for the organ. | Good move. Mr. O'Sullivan, of the Morning News, is here, | aiding, as I suppose, Mr, Bancroft, to shape bis | course so as to suit the times, or probably to ad- vance some local interests ard personal aggrandize- | ments. The sequel will tell. q | An opinion is afloat here, that there are a great | many removals to take piece about the middle of | this “propitious” month, in the departments at | Washington. Bnt should this, like all other fulse | reports turn out to be untrue, the well-known, tried, \ and true democrats residing in the District of Co- | luutbia, are prepared to carry the war iato Africa. | ‘Then there is but one alternative for Presideut | Polk, either to war wih his enemies, or muke | peace with his friends. 3 age ‘ The candidates tor the public printing are in the field, every one exercising his tact and inventive genius, with a view to success. a The President held fast evening, one of his | “Drawing Rooms,’—(the nine given by John Jones, to the mere opening of the doors of the White House for the public.) Crowd thin—conver- sation stiff, frigid, hats affected, and altogether | so-soish. ‘Ah! Mrs. Soaptud, pon honyaer—the President looks remarkably well this evening, and | Mrs. Polk, and never saw ker appear so handsome, young, and engaging, in my life Very young wo- |man, beg pardon, Madame; lady, I should have said. Very young lady of her age.” And we leave the Cominodore levelling his eye-glass at Mrs. ) Polk on the opposite side of the room é Some amusing scenes take place at the White House now and then. A tew days ago, a genile- man with the well dressed expensive appearance of a professor of King Faro, called to see the Presi- | dent; but the colored waiter at the door said it was impossible he could go in, unless he could give his name, and the place where from. The stranger re- | ported himself as Col. Parenthesis ot Texas. The | President, doubtless, expecting that the gentleman would have news from Col. Twigas and Gen. Tay- | lor of the army, ordered Col. Parenthesis to be ad- mitted. He walked in and said, that he was from Texas, that he had voted for Col. Polk, however, in the United States at the last _election—that he want- | ed none of your damned offices, that he only want ed to see who is James K. Polk, and being satisfied | that he was nothing extra, he bid him good morn- ing. _ | Gol. Po.x.—Good morning, call again soon, if convenient. me : The Coronet.—Thank you, sir, if convenient. After the stranger’s departure, the President was | exceedingly anxious to know who the tall stranger in the striped breeches was, but nobody present had ever seen him before, nor has he been visible since. The Board of Aldermen, of our corporation, haye had before them, tor some weeks, resolutions for he removal of the Washington and Baltimore Rail- from its station on Pennsylvania, to the | nearest or farthest point without the limits of the corporation, at the option of the company. Among the reasons assigned in the resolutions by the board, tor the removal of the depot without the cor - poration, as aforesaid, is the fact, that from the pre- sent location of the depot, and from the running of the trains in and out of it by steam, there is creat risk of danger to life and limb. A_ night or mi | id | road Depot two ago, however, these reverend fathers of our city, agreed to postpone the removel of the | Depot in the holding this threat rospect that by over the head of the lway Company, they might be induced to.a reasonable reduction of their tare, the danger to life and limb being set aside as a secondary consideration, as in fact it is, in this and most other cases where a question of dollars and cents is involved among the issues contested. There has been no accident we believe, as yet, within the | city, from the locomotives ; but still if there is dan- | ger to life and limb, the city fathers ought to take | care of their children, without regard to a prospec- tive reduction of fare, as the bonus demanded for allowing the danger to life and limb to remain un- | disturbed and unremoved. Queer old chaps, our city fathers. Alderman Purdy ought to send them a leather medal. : Hon. R. B. Rhett, of South Carolina, who, a short time since passed through this city on his way to | New York, is again at Coleman’s, having in the inte- rum been to Europe and back, via Boston and New York. We could scarcely stretch our credulity to believe it the same gentleman untii assured of the fact by the host of theNational. Steam is assuredly the great agent of the progress of the 19th ie physical, political an ious progress—they xo by steam, and from the number of boilers con- | Unually bursting, it is evident that the steam is | sometimes up too high. And from the combustible materials collecting, you may rely upon it, there will be such a political explosion in the apitol next win- ter as will astonish the Irish. And from his proxi- mity to the boilers, look out for Father Ritchie among the killed and wounded. The two-third rule will be apt to blow him as high as it blew up Mr. Van Buren. Still we hope for the best ; and that Col. | Polk will so manage the safety-valve as to let off the | surplus steam without danger to life or limb. ——~——— New Onceans, Aug. 31, 1845.
