A Rienreous Junament.—A negro who called himself Thomas Jefferson, and who guve his residence as at No. Minetta street, New York, was arrested last evening 'y offic for infamously insulting two Beil able merried ladies—Mrs, Morris and Mrs. Bunnelt, of Prince street, Brooklyn, while on their way to church — ‘The scoundrel stepped between the ladi put his arms around their necks, and attempted to kiss them. He did not deny the offeace imputed to him, and offered as his ouly apology thut he was intoxicated. He was exceed- iugly violent, refractory and abusive when he was arrest- ed; and at the watch glass. The Magistrate sentenced him to bo imprisonsd, at hard labor, in the county jail tor the term of six months; to pay a fine of filty ¢ollars; to give security, in the sum of $250 for his good behavior for one ir; and to remain here is either a great luxity and distillers of this county in in prison until such penalty was satisfied, and such sure- | ties given. Fast TRavELLING.—The “Henry Ruggles” locomotive, on the Long Island Railroad, manufactured by Norris, the otier day ran eight miles in eight minutes Cuuncu Arvains.—The Rev. Jonathan Bruce bas de- clined the call of the Second Congregational Church in Brovklyn, and accepted the call of the First Congrega- tional Church in Malliord, Ct. 7 was arrested by’ officer Hurley, the keeper of a small store at No. 202 Front str y throwing over her a pail of water. ‘Tho defendant, in default of giving bail to keep the peace, was temporarily consigned to the cus- tody of the jailor. ‘Aman named Thomas Hogan was taken into custody, and ordered to find sureties to be of good behavior here- aiter, for having, on Tuesday evening, disturbed a tem- erance meecing at the Bethel church, in Main street, by Eleking at the doors, and making other demonstrations of « disorderly character. Otticer Haynes arrested aman named Barnard Lynch, near Gowanus’ bridge, tor knocking his horse down with a stone by striking him upon the head, causing a dread- ful contusion, and the effusion of much blood. Lynch was examined yesterday morning and committed for trial at the Oyer and Terminer. Tue Fenvies.—Well regulated as the Fulton and South Ferries are generally considered to be, complaints are loud and frequent that the boats connected with the latter are not permitted to run at a later hour than 10 o'clock. Since the lower ferry was established, the popul tion of South Brooklyn has increased in a greater ratio than any other portion of the city, and sco.es of merchants and clerks who cross by this route have often to welk or ride to the Fulton Ferry, and thence—a con- siderable distance—to their homes. Tho managers cer- tainly ought to remedy this evil, if they possibly can do ao,consistently with the duties they have to discharge to the stockholders and others whom they represent. Accipent.—The sidewalk opposite an unfinished build- ing in York, between Jay und Bridge street, has been ina dangerous position for some days past. A young man named Moore, trom Providence, fell over some flagging left in the middle ot the sidewalk, dislocated his wrist, cut a deep gash in his head and breast, and was other- wisé injured. Heretofore there has sel- dom been more than four or five in port atone time, and it is very strange that at this time there should be such an immonse increase in the trade as to require a number of vessels ten times larger than ever before in port at the same time. The fact was sufficiently extraordinary to excite the wonder of the citizens of St. Johns, and well it might.
