LATEST INTELLIGENCE. Bavrimonx, Aug. 18, 1845. Non-arrival of the Herald—va Firemen’s Row—Depor. ture of the Flying .Irtillery—Stock Board, $c. For the last two days, through some mishap or other, the Herald has not reached Baltimere, which has caused more excitement among our citizens, than if one of the banks hal exploded, or, than the rumored declaration of war by Mexico. There are hundreds here, who would rather go without their dinner, than not enjoy their ac- customed treat, in perusing the columns of your excel- lent paper. It has, however, come to hand to-day. On Saturlay night we had a regular old fashioned fire riot, between the Vigilant, New Market, and Indepen- dent, onthe old battle ground, corner of Gay and Balti- more streets. I happened tobe strolling about at the time, enjoying the brig! moonlight, and was an eye-wit- ness to the disgraceful scene. ‘ Major Ringgold, with his fine troop of Flying Artil- lery, are now on their way from Fort, McHenry to the Point, to embark for ‘Texas, on board the ship Herman — They have about seventy-five horses to put on voard, which will prevent them from sailing till late this even- ing or to-morrow morning, andit is expected she will be accompanied by the frigate Congress, as aconvoy, Which will meet her at Hampton Roads. A finer body of well- drilled men have not marched under the American flag since the revolution, than Major Ringgeld’s troop. It would require a considerable Mexican army to capture this one company Nothing further has yet been received from Mexico in this quarter, thongh we are daily in expectation of the reception of the final mandate for war, which will be first received here through the telegraph. The telegragh oflice Is crowded every evening at hall-past five o'clock, at which hour the southern mail reaches Washington, and the news it brings is transmitted here in a moment. and if the line was completed to New York, could be sent there equally as soon. Should there be a war, the telegraph will be invaluable. Robert Renwick, a worthy and respectable cabinet- Itimore, was ariiigned before the City Court on the charge of assaulting one of the “ up: nd,” Wm. Chase Barney, Esq., who has igured in the papers so often of late. ‘The District At- torney ou examining the case, entered a verdict of “ not guilty,” or in other words, served him right.” The Cause of the quarrel arose out of the non-payment of bill for the furnishing of that little cottage in Delaware, near New Castle, amounting to the snug sum of $500.— Justice Booth has, it is now thought, made worse deci- sions in his time than the entering of a nol pros. in the marriage case Stock Mane.*17-—On Saturday Baltimore 6's closed at 76} tor sale, aud 76 bid. Baltimore 6’s sold at 1014. Puiavecrnra, August 18, 1845. We have to-day a storm of rain from the south-east, which has marred the anticipations of a portion of our military citizens, who intended embarking on an excur- sion down the in the steamboat Ohio. A destructive fire occurred this morning in Camden, New Jersey. The large carpet manufactory belonging to Messrs, Wentworth and Smith, (of this city,) was en tirely.consumed. It is supposed to have originated in the drying room, from defect in the pipe, by which it wa heated from the pet ‘The loss is estimared at $15,000 fully covered by insurance : it is tobe rebuilt immedi ately. The building wys owned by Browing & Bro- thers, of Camden, The Extra Herald, containing the news by the Hiber- nia, bas just been received, and is going like wildtire. The warlike intelligence from Mexico, which reat here on Saturday morning, was pretty thorougily cussed in commercial citcles during the day ; ani ale though some weve inclined to believe that Mexico would declare war, yet the majority were of the opinivn, that she would issue a few more bulletins, after the fashion of the Brother of the Sun and Moon, and then the whole af fair would be forgotten. Mexico, herself, ereates no alarm here, either for the safety of our commerce or any other interest, provided other powers keep ont of the scrape ; but the tons of some of the government organs, in relation to the treatment of men, not natives of Mexi" co, captured in privateers, some of our merchants think will be seized upon as a cause, by some foreign power, to interfere, and interference will bring two or three other powers into the field for the purposes of mediation, or, perhaps, something worse ; ani we may, by these means, find ourselves surrounded with doubtiul friends, if not euemies. Our people do not believe that England bas renounced ail hopes of thwarting annexation, although it may now be said to be fully consummated, They sy, that the experimental fleet of Great Britain, now at sea, is but a card in the hands of the ministry which circum: stances may yet compel them to play. ‘The hanging of acrew of Englishmen, for instance, jor having been en- gaged in the Mexican service, by the authority of our government, some of our wise men think would show thet this experimental squadron would soon make a de- monstration on our coast. Verily, although the ways of England are deep and designing, yet some weak soul ive her credit for more cunning than she really posserses.- don’t think, however, that sne would calmly look on and see her sailors hung, even though they were ina foreign service, without a pretty loud growl. The arrival of the Hibernia heey ed at noon, aftera of twelve days, was hailed as another triumph of the Cunard line. The weather was most delightful, not- withstanding the prevalence of an «asterly wind, and our wharves were crowded with people to witne: arrival. Her news is considered favorable. The firm- ness of the cotton and sugar markets in England and on the Continent, gave grea faction to the dealers in those articles. You will receive the news long before this reaches you, an express mail having been made up at our Post Oifice for the South in less than an hour after the arrival of the steamer, Our enterprising Postmaster understands the details of his department toa charm; he decides and acts at the same time with celerity and cor- rectness. | wish you could infuse alittle of his spirit into your city Post Office Today merchants will have time to discuss the con- tents of their letters—for they put more faith in them than in the newspapers, and if I hear anything new or pete | will record the same as another item in the world’s story. There is no local news of interest ring here yt present. Weather fine, and the ladies You will see by the papers that the charming Ellen Tree and —. band Charles Kean, arrived here in the Hiberni: y the Albion, in this city, b will proceed soon to New York. et d From Orecox.—An Inperenpent Government. ~The Platte, Mo., Argus, of the 2d inst. pub- lishes a letter from Peter il.
