He appears to be about fifty years old, weigh 130 pounds, is covered with hair like a bear and will eat nothing but raw meat, which if tainted he likes the better; he also devours craw fish and frogs with avidity, if left alone, but will not touch food in the presence of any one. To the Ist of August this year the balance will not ex- ceed eighteen millions of dollars, being a decline of sbeut eight millions of dollars in this port alone. With this ee against us on the trade of this port lust year, the balance iu favor of the country was about three millions of dollars, Should our trade for the re- mainder of the year be as favorable as it has been thus far, the value of the exports for the United States will exceed the value of the imports from fifteen to twenty millions of dolla ‘This wilt make avast difference in the commercial at- fairs of the country and keep down the rates of foreign exchange toa level much below par. The exportation of cotton from the United States for the year just closed has beon greater than any previous year. Larger | quantities of all our staple productions have been ship- before, but prices 0 much reduced that there has not been a proportionate value. The production of cotton, tobacco, provisions: &c. in the United States has become so much larger than the home demand for consumption, and the surplus is so much larger than the foreign demand, that prices have and must continue to rule very low, so that our exporta tion of these staples may increase rapidly in quantity, without their being a corresponding increase in value. So far as the production and consumption of cotton are con- cerned, they will regulate themselves. In favorable sea- sons the production has invariably exceeded the con, sumption and will continue to for years, but the time is not far distant; when the consumption will crowd so close upon the production, that are unfavorable season will sé riously affect the manufacturer, andthe manufacturers of Europe will be the principal sufferers. Having the raw material at their doors, our domestic manufacturers will be first served, and if there should be a short supply the foreign manufacturers will feel it the most. The an- nexation of Texas, and the addition to our country of thousands upon thousands of ucres of land, peculiarly adapted to the cultivation of cotton, must increase the production of the raw material very much, but the in- inall parts of the world is 80 ra” pid that a corresponding increase in the production is re- quised to supply the demand. ‘The consumption of cot- Great Britain ITED IMMEDIATEL Man Barber, whom covstant employment will be given. street. nee ihe inthe basement. Ac. cording to official returns, the consumption of cotton in this cour:try in 1844, reached 346,744 bales, allow for at least sixty thousand bales more, taken by factories in the vicinity of plantations, of which no re- turns were made, which would swell the actual con- sumption to at least four hundred tuousand bales for that year. This year the increase will not be much less than fifty per cent, but we will put it down at one hundred and fifty per cent, making the consumption about five hundred and filty thousand bales, calculating about the same increase from 1845 to 1846, the consumption in 1846 will not fall much short of seven hundred and fifty thousand bales. The consumption put down for Great Britain, is without doubt much less than the amount that will be actually used, but we leave it at the quantity stated, to reduce any over estimate made on others. The crop, now about all in, will be full twenty feur hundred thousand bales, included the receipts from ‘This supply with the stock on hand at the close of last, and the supbly from other sources about thirty-four hurdred thousand bales, out of which the consumption will take about two millions seven hun- dred thousand bales, leaving a stock on hand on the first of September, 1845, of seven hundred thousand bales, with which a crop of twenty-four hundred thousand bales will be required to supply the demand for consump- tion, without having a single bale of stock on hand at the close of the year. ‘The finances of Mississippi appear tobe gradually but steadily improving. Various Matters and Things of Great Interest. ‘‘Let us alone,” isthe motto of the State of Florida; and we are informed that it was expressed with much warmth by Mr. Secretary Marcy last Saturday in conversation with a letter-writer. “Let us alone,” said the Secretary of War, referring to the Administration. Has not the Seeretary of Waran odd pair of old breeches for the Major? Why the Major says he knew uncle Billy when he kept a little eight by ten law-office in Albany. Ought that not to be a sufficient recommendation? We think so.— And shall not the Major now have a chance to save his bacon? Well, the fact is, under all the cireum- stances, and difficulties, and prior and more irresis- tible claims upon uncle Billy, we incline, nolens vo- lens, to the conclusion that the worthy Major stands no more chance for a slice of bread and butter than does any other Peter Funk before your board of City Aldermen in regard of them ’ere_ pinchbeck watches, The Postmaster Genaral, unable to effect anythin, like an authorized or reasonable compromise witl the main railroad line between BaJtimore and Phila- delphia, 1s now considering the relative merits of the Lancaster route, and an independent mail line of steamboats between Baltimore and the city of fights, riots and brotherly love. We consider ungle Sam a legitimate object tor spunging and pilfering, begging and swindling, but when tens, twenties, and thirues of thousands are sought to be abstracted from his pockets by our railroad autocrats at a single draft, we must enter our protest against the imposition. The Postmaster General has been doing his very best to coax or coerce theee railroad companies into fair terms, and if the people, and Congress will only stand by him, (as we doubtnot they will,) these locomotive monopolies must knock under, The presentiment here is now universal thata vhole grist of heads trom the subordinates of the de- partments are to be chopped off with the incoming of the month of the virgin. i But suppose we give you a, little hotel talk.— Sf Well. hear there is ne to be a regular haul next month.” ‘ Yes,” and old Major Noland, Commis- sioner of the Public Buildings, who does not know a brick wall from a board fence, is going out for sure, and {George Phitt. of Pennsylvania, is to take his place.” ‘* Why, youdon’t say. Musgrave, Wm. Sterling, and Andrew McIntosh, were arrested yesterday on the charge of having com- mitted a rape on a young German girl named Margaret Syler, on Sunday evening, near the President street rail- road depot. It appears she was returning home from a visit to some of her friends in the city,in company with a young brother, when the latter was driven off with stones, anda knife drawn on him, the girl gagged, and carried behind some cars, and each of the four ruffians succeeded in violating her person, The watchman ha- ving seen the above mentioned rowdies in that neighbor” hood, had them immediately arrested, when the girl and her brother identified them, and one of the party confess- ed the deed. The victim of their lusts is a pretty looking young girl, amd had been in the country butten days: Some of them are very tably connected, and young Roberts is ason of the deputy Warden of the peniten- ‘Dinan named Charles Farrell was sent to jail yester- day ow the charge of having runaway with his neighbor's wife and child, ‘The wife, of course, went with him wil- lingly, but getting tired of her love for varie returned to i husband, who received t with open arg. Farrell, accordingly, threatened the husband’s lifé, when he was arrested and committed. The elections in Tenne: North Carolina, Ken- tucky, Indiana, and Alabama, take place next week as Baltimore is the general depot for returns from th States, I will furnish you daily with an accurate synopsis ofall that may reach here, up to the lasthour. There wiil be no life in the political hemisphere of Maryland un- til these elections are over, and then which ever party is victorious, will carry this State in October. ‘As I was passing along Front street, a few evenings since, I observed a young lawyer of this city sitting on a fire plug, at the corner of Pitt street, in front of the shot tower, and thinking it rather strange, my curiosity was excited ; but on crossing over the street, I saw dodging around the corner a half-dozen different persons, among whom were several members of the Mercer street police. Presuming they were on an important trail, | thought I would wait for further developements.— Presently a Indy dressed in white, hove in sight, which seemed to cause considerable fluttering among the concealed vigitants. She approached the shot tower, and on arriving in front, Atopped and looked around, when the gallant young lawyer was er ide ia @ moment, He had scarcely time to speak to ser, however, when ag rest of = party surrounded ‘hem, and then, for the first time, the gentlemen appear- ont recognise each other. The lady stood fora mo- ment, apparently bewildered, and then made off at a brisk , whilst the rest of the party joined in a vse 4 ugh, at what then was a mystery to me, and moved o! a another direction. I have at last, however, ferretted out the key to the myst ry anda very pretty piece of romance itis, It appears that one of our newly appoint- et Justices of the Peace, a young bachelor, anda fine looking fellow withal, reeeived an anonymous letter, written in a beautiful hand 'yle of composition, pro- fessing to come {rom @ lady who was deeply enamored of , and who desired an interview in front of the shot tower. Although not a‘ Joseph” by any means, he de- clined going, thinking the affair a hoax, but privately showed the letter to some seven or eight of his friends.
